Got the turn done and sent back but have not enough time for a serious set of updates.

Do any of you have a wife who stresses over packing. I mean STRESSES! Paula was freaked out that I hadn't packed for the weekend. I planned to throw everything in about half an hour before I left but she couldn't handle it and spent 45 minutes packing my stuff for a 4 day trip to my sister's house with no real need of preparing for anything special. My plan was to throw everything in in about 5 minutes and be happy. Now the wife is happy and I have clothes and who-knows-what for ANY possible event!

I pack in 5 minutes. The wife takes 5 days. So far, I have not wanted for anything important

I rather pride myself on my packing. Packing is one of those many things that I feel I know more about than any other person living. (It surprises me myself, sometimes, how many of these subjects there are.) I impressed the fact upon George and Harris, and told them that they had better leave the whole matter entirely to me. They fell into the suggestion with a readiness that had something uncanny about it. George put on a pipe and spread himself over the easy-chair, and Harris cocked his legs on the table and lit a cigar.

I pack in 5 minutes, but I overpack, by far.... I'll have 2 suitcases for a 1 day overnight lol. Never know when I might need that 5th pair of underwear (A pair for the roadtrip, a pair to change into when I get there, a pair for the night, a pair after morning shower, a pair after the morning activity, etc. lol). My wife packs in 4 days, but packs "just right".

I made the habit of taking some washing powder so I never need more then 5 pairs of socks, T-shirts and underwear. Well except that time when I went on swing dance camp and burned through 5 shirts a day.

Ah...It is not a question of your packing. You did not pack ahead of time so your wife could check your packing and put in all the stuff you missed! We have the same name and approximate age so this is how I would pack:
1 pair of socks and 1 pair of underwear for each day
It's not a wedding (10 minutes extra) so 2 pairs of pants , 4 shirts. 2 with buttons, 2 pullovers
1 pair of running shoes
1 pair of all purpose hiking/walking type boots
1 pair of sweat pants which double for any gym that might be found or a pajamas
1 sweater
1 coat of appropriate seasonal weight
1 belt
bathing suit as required
NO LAPTOP!!!!! (not for family trips!)
medication as required
toiletries
1 Amazon Kindle
1 Smartphone
1 Fuji X100F camera
chargers or wires as needed
1 Swiss Army knife
1 wallet with cash, debit & credit cards
car keys
1 baseball cap with BASEBALL TEAM OR SPORTS TEAM LOGO (no political affiliation on the hat!)
subtract what ever you are wearing on your back (1 shirt, 1 pair socks, 1 pair underwear, 1 belt, 1 baseball cap, 1 pair of pants

there.....10 minutes.....did I miss anything?

I made it out without issue to lovely--hotter then HOLY HE**--Wichita. How can it be in the mid-90s in the middle of May??!! I am used to 35% humidity--NOT 90%!!!

Appreciate the very considerate words about packing. Think that I tend to overpack when I wait to the last minute. That being said, I do not stress about it. Paula does.

December 9, 1941

Am at my sister's place in Wichita, KS and wanted to do my Day Three update only to find that I left my notes back at home. STUPID!

Want to hit some of the major points of the day and will then come back for an in-depth set of reports.

The Thundering Herd
Jorge sends all the shipping in the Philippines on a pell-mell run-for-your-life set of orders. No less then six Japanese STF and CARDIV2 await them as they run. Nearly 30 ships are sunk including Brit DDs Thanet and Scout an AVP, an AS, and several APs. Two of the six TFs run out of ammo and are ordered to CRB for re-supply.

The wildest fight that occurs is between USS Boise and the four modern US DDs sent to bolster the Asiatic Fleet. This TF tangles with BC Kirishima, Hiei and 3 DDs. There are three separate night encounters as the Americans try to move south and the Japanese react back into them. A final daylight encounter then occurs before the two TFs separate and head for home. Through the course of the battles, all four American DDs take serious damage and Boise gets hit by 4 14" shells and 8-10 other shells for heavy damage. Those damned 6" shells from Boise make total chaos out of Kirishima's upperworks. She takes 51 SYS and no FLOT damage. YIKES! Evil American CL!!

The afternoon sees a strike by Hiryu Vals plant bombs on three of the damaged DDs as well as two 250KG bombs onto Boise. One might THINK this finishes the CL. We;ll see...

Sub OPs
Nearly another dozen Allied ships are sank by Japanese SS during the course of the turn. These specifics will be reported when I have the paper in front of me.

Pearl Harbor
Against my better judgement I ordered all my Kates to attack PH. Bets were at least 20% casualties. This bet was under what actually happened. THe strike consists of 60 Zeros and 120 Kates. They encounter nearly 70 American Fighters. My Zeros pounce and quickly shot down over a dozen fighters before waving the red cape and allowing near 40 planes through to attack my bombers. We lose over 30 planes at this point. Nearly 90 still drop their bombs from 11,000 Ft but only FIVE score hits. CRAP! Two 800G hit Idaho and two more hit Arizona while Minneapolis gets a single strike. Horse poo-doo!

The end of the day reveals over 40 Kates lost for the effort. GOOD news is that we only lose about 24 pilots. Don't know how that math works out but I am happy to confirm by going through the KB TB Daitai. Could be worse I suppose...

This strike was launched from seven hexes due north of PH. Instead of retiring north, The KB shuts down all searches and strikes (Leaving only CAP up) and retires ENE to link up with my AOs. This should place the CV out of air search range. We'll refuel and then move towards the WC to try and catch some convoys before returning to cover the Midway invasion.

Manila
Contrasting the PH disaster is a very good attack on Manila Bay. A force of 40 Zero and 80+ Bombers smash damaged shipping in the port sinking four Fleet Subs and damaging another 6-8 ships. GOOD!

Ground

Malaya
Mersing
The 4th ID lands without issue at Mersing. Three BBs cover the landing that has ZERO interference. We shall shock attack tomorrow and capture the base driving out the two Brit Brigades present in the hex. To ensure this, nearly 100 bombers and all three BBs will hit the hex before the attack.

Malacca
Paras land at Malacca and force six units to stop in their strategic movement. The assault gets an 18-11 AV result for 1-1. Just miss the needed 2-1! The rest of the Paras will land tomorrow and, hopefully, we'll gain the base. All that truly matters is stopping the retreat long enough to come over from Mersing. We shall see...

Those are High/Low points of the turn.

December 9-10, 1941

The war proceeds without any major hiccups so far. I am sure that Jorge intends to cause some chaos but, so far, this has not happened.

SS Ops
December 9, 1941
I-166 SINKS AKL Lipis (1 TT) AND hits TK Brittannia (2TT) off Lingga
I-76 SINKS Yo-78 with 4 Shells off San Diego
Ro-65 SINKS AKL Magallanes with 8 Sh/2TT off Jolo
Ro-34 SINKS AKL Prinicess of Negros with--catch this--23 Sheel hits
I-164 hits AK Talthibius with 1 TT off Ramree Isle
I-127 SINKS AK Si Kiang with 1 Sh/3 TT near Puerto Princesa
I-154 SINKS TK Aletta with 1TT at Denpasar
I-158 SINKS AK Howra with 2 TT near Koggala
I-124 SINKS both AK Nanning (2 Sh/4TT) AND AK Hai Lee (2 TT)
Ro-64 SINKS AKL Kolambugan with 1 Sh/2 TT at Tarakan

December 10, 1941
I-157 SINKS both AKL Honolulan (1TT) and AKL Oklahoman (5 Sh/2 TT) near Koggala
I-123 SINKS AKL Cetus with 7 Shells near Jolo
I-6 SINKS AKL Nootka with 1 Sh/5TT at Coos Bay

Sinkings/Damage for the Two Day Total:
SUNK--4 AK, 1 TK, and 8 AKL
DAMAGED--1 Yo, 1 AK, 1 TK

Very nice start to the Sub War. I order about 10 SS to change their patrol areas reflecting the movement of ships from Hong Kong and the Philippines south.

My Surface TFs are eating up everything they find!

December 9, 1941
Maya-Chokai TF sinks 1 PG, 2 AK, AS Otus, DD Thanet and Scout, 2 AP, and an AM

Natori TF sinks 3 AKL, 1 AP, and 1 AVP

2 AMC sink an AM near--CATCH THIS--Coal Harbour

As mentioned previously, we have the prolonged battle between BCs Hiei and Kirishima versus CL Boise and 4 modern DD.

Kongo/Haruna TF sinks 3 HDML

December 10, 1941
Fuso/Yamashiro TF sinks AP Pres Madison, 2 TK, 7 AKL, 1 PG, 1 AK

Isuzu TF sinks 2 Yo

Natori TF sinks 1 AK, 1 TK, and 2 AKL

Maya/Chokai TF sink 2 AM

The sinkings total for the opening, so far, is nearing 100 ships. My personal goal is crushing 200+ in the first month of the war. Looks like we are well on our way to that number and then exceeding it.

I know we have planned on a slow game but this is like watching the paint dry or sitting and watching the cars rust.

Open the email HOPING to see a turn. NOTHING!

Air and CV Ops

CV Ops
Kido Butai
The Kido Butai strikes PH on the 9th and successfully moves away without observation on the 10th. It will refuel on the 11th. We threw 125 Kates at PH on the 9th and there are still 75 or so airframes left with 130 pilots backing them up.

CARDIV2
December 9th
The TF moves south of Mindanao. The CVs continue their solid work as strikes hit CL Boise with 3 Bombs, DD Stockton with another, and then sink an AVP and 3 CVLs. Since we have Hiryu, Soryu and two CAVs, I keep one of the four carrying TTs while the other three go with bombs. This certainly stretches out the Torps.

December 10th
The carriers move aggressively south to just east of Balikpapan. Bad weather holds attacks in the morning but the afternoon sees a strike of 38 Zero and 24 Vals SINK DDs Trippe and Stockton. NICE!

CVLs
The 9th sees the 3 CVLs provide LRCAP over Mersing with this TF then moving to Pontianak, Borneo on the 10th. No strikes flown due to bad weather.

I shall join CARDIV2 and the 3 CVLs tomorrow north of Soerabaja. Nothing will be able to fight through this combined force. They will protect the Landing at Palembang on the 12th and CRUSH any shipping within range.

Air Ops
After taking Catobato on the 7th, I move a Chutai of 12 Vals to the base as well as 16 Mavis. The Vals sink an ACM and AKL on the 9th and then a Tanker on the 10th.

Manila
As described earlier, two massed strikes hit Manila on both the 9th and 10th. Nice results come from them. One may add Seal, Spearfish, Sealion and Skipjack to the sunk SS list. Additionally a PG and AM are sunk with 2 SS and an AO further struck.

Move half of these striking planes and Zeros out of Formosa and down to Brunei on the 10th. They will go into action on the 11th from there.

Luzon
Continue strikes on Clark and Iba during these days.

Malaya
Launch lots of bomber sorties against Alor Star, Kota Bharu, and several other targets all hitting troops that are in Strategic Mode.

LRCAP protects Mersing.

B-17s
My opponent is using his B-17s. Three days of B-17 attacks on Kido Butai see at least 6-8 destroyed and nearly all others damaged. The Philippine B-17s are used against Cotabato and Brunei's AFs. Some fighters oppose each strike and we see continued attrition of these planes.

Those are the air and CV Ops for the two day period.

Ground Operations

December 9th
Capture the following bases: Ocean Isle, Guam, Miri, and Nauru.

Malacca
My Paras land and shock attack again for a 1-1 result. No luck capturing the base but things do look promising for the taking of the peninsula.

Land at Mersing with the 4th ID.

Hong Kong
I weakened the Hong Kong assault force and may regret that. Launch my first attack and get a 1-3 result. Hmmm...

December 10th
Mersing
We easily capture the base in a 6-1 attack. The 3 BBs bombard as well as about 80 planes. Two units surrender while the two Aussie Brigades do me to huge favor of retreating to Johore Bharu. The door is wide open to move due west and cut the peninsula!

Malacca
The Paras complete landing and attack again at a 1-2 result. Doesn't matter. The hex is contested and nothing can move through it. BANZAI!

Rabaul
A large Fast TF lands a Regiment and Base Force at Rabaul.

Ternate
A Fast TF lands here as well.

China
The Japanese attack vectors begin to come into focus as we win three successive attacks:
1. 77,58 sees a JDA for 14-1 inflicting 2399 Chinese Cas (140 Squads)
2. 87,45 gets a JSA for 13-1 inflicting 4958 Cas (279 Squads)
3. 89,39 gets a JSA for 2-1 doing 2697 Cas (143 Squads)

Those attacks equal a month of Chinese replacements...

I'll pull up the game and get some screenshots.

Here are current Operations in the Philippines and Malaya:

Philippines
The 14th Army is tasked with taking Luzon. Tomorrow will see landings in Northern Luzon with then an additional landing at Naga. The army has 2 ID and 2 Brig plus lots of Support Units.

Malaya
We're moving out of Singora, Patani, and Kuantan.

Mersing has movement going due west to cut the RR. The 55th is being lifted from Kuantan to Mersing while the Imperial Guards and 5th ID will drive down from Singora. Near CRB is two full ID as well as a BUNCH of Artie!

Central DEI

LOTS of movement here:

The two Carrier TFs are moving for their link-up. We gonna be shooting at LOTS of ships and warships. Once they link-up then the move is towards Palembang for Cover there.

Palembang
A small STF of 4 DDs will move into Palembang first to clear it. This TF is followed by two Fast TF carrying an entire Brigade and two Base Forces. I really, truly hope the massed bombardment of the landing will so disorganize whatever is present that we can easily take this vital base with a deliberate attack on the 12th. Any planes at the AF will get smacked as well. This will be good.

Any TF circled in Black is a STF.

Central Pacific

The Wake TF moves away from the Marshalls and sets course. It shall be covered by a small STF of 2 CL and 4 DDs and the 3 CVEs (plus a CL and 5 DDs) who carry 63 Planes between them.

The Midway IF is loading at Guam and Saipan.

The Americans begin reinforcing Wake and Midway earlier in this Mod. Neither will be a pushover. Each Invasion force is carrying a Japanese SNLF Assault Brigade (These are 3 old SNLF units plus a small HQ section with an AV of about 200. They are brittle and not of much use on defense.) and a BF or two.

I have a BB (Ise or Hyuga) embedded in each Invasion Force to help break-up the defenders during the landing.

SE Pacific

We've landed at Rabaul and should take that tomorrow.

Landings set for Manus, Madang, Buin, Tulagi, and Lunga.

The TFs that grabbed Ocean and Nauru pick up their troops and move for Tarawa and Tabitueau.

REAL chance for Allied invention in these locations. This has led to small TFs with light troops so any losses will not be too great.
