Since I am defending the glorious motherland against the hated invaders in FITE this time I decided to unite Europe.

Firstly the house rules:
Entrenching - Pretty much as per the scenario recommendations, basically don't take the piss, only entrench on front lines, around important cities or along river lines. (As entrenchments stay it's very easy to cover the entire of Europe in them so this is to limit that)

Russia and the west - No Russian regiments defending the uk, no western troops showing up in Russia, basically they don't work together unless their front lines meet

Para drops - Unrestricted in friendly territory but only 20 hexes from the airfield into hostile territory

Offensives - Try to keep them roughly historical, i.e no operation Barbarossa invading the UK

Colonies - Common Wealth units can't guard french colonies (and visa versa) but once they get invaded all bets are off

Airfields - all air fields used to stage planes must be behind your front lines, no using guerillas or paratroopers to capture ones deep in enemy territory then stage strikes out them

HQ's and other support units - We are using the D21 rules here, only combat units can lead into enemy hexes, support units can covert stuff behind the front lines but if you want to get behind and circle the enemy units it has to be a combat unit leading the charge.

Opening set up:

So the allies chose not to extend the Maginot line

The axis choose to focus on building carriers in 1930 giving one Italian on in the med and a German one in the Baltic

The axis choose to create additional regiments in the 1930's (this also gives Russian addition regiments)

And last but not least the axis decided to start by invading Poland.

So the scene is set and you know join us at the start of axis turn 3:

So axis strategy is going to be west first, I am going to focus my efforts on taking out France and the UK first with a long term goal of opening up the southern front through turkey after dominating the med.

So on to the invasion of Poland:

Not trying anything fancy just going to use my over whelming strength to run right over them and take warsaw as quick as I can so I can get these units back to the west

Actually the transport sharing feature of the game will give you a higher supply boost if you dig in ALL your units. Digging them in allows the sharing of the vehicles in the units and trucks to move supplies are especially useful. The trucks will be reclaimed by the unit when it moves again.

I've seen gamers do this very thing. It's considered rude.

The problem in this is the map is quite small so if I started now I could make sure there where entrenchments covering most of Germany by the time the allies are ready to fight.

So the invasion of Poland is off....to a bloody awful start. It won't be a long war if this keeps up.

The initial strike to take out the polish air force did not turn out as I expected:

So the end result is a very lack luster invasion, looks like the allies don't have much to worry about with the Germans

Turn 5 is on us and the poles are fighting tooth and nail

We managed a deep penetration from the north with the moto divisions linking up with the para troopers and threatening Warsaw.

In the north west and the south west we finally managed to take out a couple of the polish divisions after a very tough fights allowing me to start concentrating on the remaining ones.

In the south after a couple of bloody attempts to dislodge dug in divisions we have resorted to bypassing them.

At least Poland is proving to be a good learning experience the German army in this scenario performs very differently to the one I am used to in D21 or FITE.

In other news the Russians have decided to invade Finland so the fins are digging in for a hard slog mean while the french and British have declared war and have started mobilizing

Hm, strange, in TOAW III Poland was done in 2-3 turns. After France the Axis-losses should be below 20.000 HRS, then everything is alright.

@Fleet: Well, they used ammo and supplies. Maybe it doesn't mean damage, but "still ready for action". :)

Top of turn 6 here is the butchers bill

Looks like I am doing ok, I think I have my head around the tactics for this one now. Head on attacks are always a bad idea you need at lead to be flanking with over whelming force or ideally cut them off from supply for a turn or two then they go quickly

The Russians decided to invade Finland:

Currently the Finns are giving them a bloody nose though they where helped by the allies failing their force proficiency check early in the turn, either way it's a fighting retreat for them

Now on to the main action, here is Poland at the top of the turn:

and at the bottom:

As you can see it was a good turn with the polish defenses starting to break and next turn I should be able to circle Warsaw, hopefully Poland will be under my control in a couple of turns.

Well, you are faster if you break up your units, surround the enemy (why fighting him?) and rush for Warsaw.
@Winter War: The Russians have to go head on. Bring LOTS of units to rotate and attack everywhere - with minimal losses. It's possible to reach Helsinki in 1940.

Yeah Iknow I just have an irrational thing against breaking up units...been playing as Russians too much

Short update for this turn, in the north the Russians have made some progress:

In Poland I am in the act of surrounding Warsaw I have also finally got around to splitting some of the units up allowing me to surround and take out a chunk of the polish defenders.
