I was curious is there any impact on the back end of the game when you add extra sides. I am asking because the scenario I have been working on sporadically for the past year or so will end up requiring the major combatants, a blind civilian, blind bio, a holding side for capture functions, and a side that will conduct logistics and other scripted operations.

Sides per se don't add too much load, the active unit count is the killer. This is heavily mitigated by using 'blind' sides like you mentioned. My scenarios routinely have 'Blue' 'Red' 'Civilian' and 'Nature'; I've not noticed a difference between that and just having two sides.

This opens another question...

Magazines! is it better for performance to add a 0/10000 loadout and set to the umber of rounds you want (say 480/10000) or is it OK to add, say 20 24/24 loadouts to get 480 loadouts/rounds in the magazine. I'm wondering if a lot of the latter doesn't slow things down????

There should be no significant difference there; although a single entry would theoretically use less resources, the difference would be absolutely miniscule.

The reason active unit count is important for performance is that each active unit is considered in sensor calculations which are quite complex and take place every pulse (blind units are still evaluated for detection but don't need to be evaluated for detecting other units).

On the other hand magazine entries are simply stored values.
