Just SUPER W O ND E R FU L.

The guys made a very great job.

One of the most brilliant designs of the war. It just lacked the turbo compressor?

And, by the way, el cid in RHS provides a variant of the P 39 with turbo compressor, I think this is a right design too;

Forward vision must have been very good too. Looks like the pilot sits slightly ahead of the wings.

The Russians loved it!

Before Pearl Harbor, my dad worked on the engines at Allison Engine in Speedway, (six blocks south of the Indy race track).
The tolerances on all Allison engines was very tight and they had a very high "esprit de corps" in building their products.
They also built the engines for the Curtiss P 40, Lockheed P 38 and the early A-36/P51...

The P 39 had fantastic performance numbers for it's day until the government stepped in and insisted on removing the superchargers.
Performance went to zilch.
At Port Moresby the thing was a sitting duck for the Japanese and the brass decided it could not be left on the ground for fear of being destroyed there.
For this reason, whenever a warning was given that the Japanese were incoming, the P 39 pilots were ordered to get in the air and head SOUTH, (away from action).
The pilots acquired the nickname of "The fishing fleet" as they all "went to sea" when action was imminent.

A real nice short video clip of maybe 20 minutes can be downloaded (free) of the P 39's and P 38's at the fields around Moresby on youtube.com...

dont mix supercharger with turbocharger - all P-39 had engines with supercharger. They were fine machines if properly used in the engine's most favorable altitude range below ~15k.

I understand they were pretty good but once they started to add guns, self-sealing fuel tanks and armor the performance dropped off. Being a small plane it was not a simple matter to just add a larger engine. Probably a great idea on he drafting table that didn't really translate into real life performance. Always liked the looks of these thought

Weird title "one of the rarest"; it was actually a very common, mass produced plane

unless it is rare because of its configuration (engine placement, tricycle gear, big cannon(for a fighter)

Good looking plane, but meat on the table for the 109 G6 and F series.

A unique design, with strengths and weaknesses.

In the hands of good pilots...
The number 1 maneuver of dogfighting is to shoot the enemy pilot down before he even knows that he is in a dogfight.

The Russians loved the P39 Airacobra, and the larger P63 King Cobra. They even turend the wing guns off to increase the rate of roll.
BTW qiot e a few jave survived ot this day, several in flying condition - post-war they made great low-level racers
