Before Pearl Harbor, my dad worked on the engines at Allison Engine in Speedway, (six blocks south of the Indy race track). The tolerances on all Allison engines was very tight and they had a very high "esprit de corps" in building their products. They also built the engines for the Curtiss P 40, Lockheed P 38 and the early A-36/P51... The P 39 had fantastic performance numbers for it's day until the government stepped in and insisted on removing the superchargers. Performance went to zilch. At Port Moresby the thing was a sitting duck for the Japanese and the brass decided it could not be left on the ground for fear of being destroyed there. For this reason, whenever a warning was given that the Japanese were incoming, the P 39 pilots were ordered to get in the air and head SOUTH, (away from action). The pilots acquired the nickname of "The fishing fleet" as they all "went to sea" when action was imminent. A real nice short video clip of maybe 20 minutes can be downloaded (free) of the P 39's and P 38's at the fields around Moresby on youtube.com... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F53Mo374edg
