2/6/42 to 2/15/42

Java: This is the heart of Allied resistance. Allied fighters at Soerabaja have thwarted KB air attacks time and again (a few ships have been hit but Dave has lost a lot of aircraft). SigInt a week back indicated reinforcements inbound to Semereng. Allied warships reacted accordingly. Today, the troop convoy, with KB escorting, took station about five hexes north of Soerabaja. Accordingly, I moved all of Saratoga's aircraft ot that base, along with most Stringbags. All USN and USAAF fighters will escort while SBDs and torpedo bombers are set to range seven. Other LBA at other bases set to bomb at 9k. All subs vectored. A bunch of DDs at Soerabaja also vectored to intercept. This probably isn't going to work well but it's likely the best shot I'll get at a non-uber enemy carrier force (and Dave has about 30 fighters at Semereng).

Singers: Two days back, I moved Hurricanes and Warhawks to Singers after detecting that large enemy raids tended to bring bombers first with sweepers later. The ambush worked, with the Japanese taking 3x losses. Overall, the air war has gone badly for Dave the past ten days. He's now lost 150 more aircraft than I have. No further attacks here since the first one. Forts at 4.41.

DEI: Dave has moved carefully to take Makassar and Samarinda but he's failed completely at Ambon, where his army gutted itself in counterproductive shock attacks. Small armies on both sides, but he has the aggravation of having to bring more.

Burma: Dave's army has nearly advanced to Meiktila. The Allied army seems to be withdrawing in good shape, though the tail-end may get chewed on.

China: To this point, the Japanese haven't been able to exploit their victories east of Sian. That's the crucial sector, at the moment. I've got the dike plugged for a few days, but new threats are inbound.

New Guinea: Dave just landed a force at vacant Milne Bay.

SoPac: No enemy presence. A Kiwi eningeer unit landed at Luganville. An Aussie cavalry brigade is loading to come. A bigger US engineering unit is on the way from Los Angeles. The plan is simply to create a speed bump that will draw Dave's full attention when the time comes. Eventually, in weeks or a month or more, he'll shift his focus from the DEI to this sector. That might happen after the invasion bonus expires (or might not). If so, Luganville will draw his attention, perhaps slowing him from taking deeper objectives. Strong reinforcements will arrive at Pago Pago in about three days. Reinfrocements are also inbound to Tahiti.

CenPac: Quiet. Bobcats ashore at Midway building forts. 1st Ranger Battalion just left San Fran for that base. Midway will be overstacked a bit but not enough to mess with supply levels.

NoPac: Utterly quiet. Other than supply runs mainly to Kodiak, I won't attend to this sector until more units are on the map.

Lots of interesting little skirmishes and bushwhacks and probes going on. I think the good guys are pretty effectively slowing the bad guys but it's been so long since I played an early game (2013?) that I might be wrong. In any event, this isn't going to turn into some Nemo/Obvert kinds of Allied butt-kicking.

Java: Dave managed to bring in reinforcements - two divisions - and landed near Batavia, catching me on the wrong foot as I thought he was coming back to Semereng. After all KB was posted close by.
So I tried for an ambush of KB, bringing my carrier air to Soerabaja. The aircraft didn't do anything except get shot down. Having "shot my wad" (Dave knew I had carrier squadrons on Java, though for all he knew they had island hopped in from Oz), giving away my secret, I backed off...and KB backed off to Balikpapan...and suddenly enemy reinforcements were coming ashore near Batavia under cover of a small carrier force. So the Allied carriers (Saratoga, Indomitable, Hermes) moved in close to Java's south coast. Strikes, and managed one hit on Shoho, but mostly I just lost aircraft. Now Dave knew for certain there were carriers and, as luck would have it, suddenly KB wasn't at Balikpapan. I didn't have detection but I suspected he might sprint into the IO to intercept. And he did. He nearly caught a bunch of good ships that were somewhat low on fuel, while the majority of the fleet had enough to flee at full speed. He didn't keep up the pursuit, thank goodness.

The sum total of all this is that he suffered a few modest hits to ships but managed to get more infantry ashore. He doesn't have armor or arty or HQ, so he's really not configured to fight hard yet. I think the Allies may be able to hold at key points for at least a few more weeks. Pretty soon I'll have to pull away the mass of fighters at Soerabaja or risk losing them. Their evac route is either Koepang to Oz or (more problematic) Batavia to Sumatra to Port Blair to Chittagong. I get the feeling, though, that he won't detach KB until Java is squared away. The invasion bonus is ticking away. And I think Hiyo was damaged in a collision caused by an Allied DD interept of KB near Bandjermasin.

China: A key battle is being fought in rough terrain a few hexes east of Sian. Dave had a numerical advantage against three Chinese corps. His guys attacked repeatedly, doing ugly things to two of the corps. But the third Chinese corps fought valiantly. After three or four consecutive attacks, the Japanese army is gassed (I think and hope). A decent Chinese corps should arrive in hex tomorrow or the day after, buying at least another round or three, perhaps even weeks. Elsewhere, Dave is pretty much not probing anywhere. The Chinese have superior numbers in good terrain. He's probably bringing in reinforcements that will blow a hole in the line - likely at Sian - but for now China isn't a lost cause.

Burma: I have little to fight with here. The Allied army has managed to pull back to Schwebo without taking any further lickings. I'll just slow Dave as much as I can.

Singers: Dave still hasn't tried another attack since the opening. Forts at 4.70. Supply still at 180k. He hasn't used bombers in about ten days, since his last strike got ambushed.

Philippines:Allies out of supply at Clark and Bataan. Dave hasn't attcked. His army is roughly equal to the Allied army, so he may not feel he has the numbers. He does.

New Guinea and SoPac: No probes other than Dave taking Milne Bay. To the SE, an Allied engineer unit is ashore at Luganville and an Aussie cav brigade arrives tomorrow or day after. I'm worried about a mini KB showing up. I have two nearby combat TFs to try to ward off enemy patrols.

Christmas Island: A Glen-boat parked nearby since the war started. Reinforcements inbound.

Midway: 1st Rangers arrived. The garrison is complete. Supply level decent. Forts at about 3.4. I hope to get it up to 4 before Dave comes. And I think he is.

NoPac: No enemy forays.

Important Japanese attacks across the board today, so worth doing this update, sector by sector.

China: This is the only theater where Japan is presently in position to blow through the MLR and do really nasty things. The only pressure point at the moment is the sector east of Sian, where a Chinese corps has made a heroic, prolonged stand. The Japanese keep hurling themselves against the greatly outnumbered defenders. Today, Japan nearly achieved a 2:1. Chinese reinforcements are inbound but there's a 2/3rds chance the Japanese will clear the hex before they arrive in three days.

If the Japanese do break through here, all is not necessarily lost, at least yet. The Japanese army has taken heavy disablements and supply should be an issue. The Chinese have a decent army at Sian and more at key points in the rough terrain to the NW. So this theater still has hope.

Java: This may be the most important theater at the moment. Dave is advancing methodically under protection of KB's presence. But Java has been a thorn in his side. He's progressing slowly, his air force keeps blunting itself against Soerbaja's defenses (he's after the ships there, but those are mostly nimble DDs that avoid his attacks), and he's expending a lot of time.

KB's longtime presence here, following immediately on it's prolonged chase of Lexington after Pearl Harbor, has left Dave without carriers elsewhere. It's been remarkably quiet in SoPac, CenPac, NoPac and (with Singers an Allied fort), the Bay of Bengal.

As a result, I've been able to fine-tune Midway's defenses, and I'm currently following the same recipe at Luganville. I think he'll commit combat TFs and Mini KB to deal with L'ville, but I won't cease my efforts until he does.

Elsewhere, Pago Pago is probably safe, and Tahiti and Christmas Island (Pacific) are working that way.

Once Java is secure, Dave will likely have to bring KB into SWPac/SoPac to expand his perimeter to normal proportions.

Philippines: The opening Japanese attack at Clark Field today dropped forts to 2 and came off at 1:2. The Japanese took heavier losses but, overall, the attack was decent. The Allies are out of supply, so the end is nigh. But holding into March actually exceeded my early expectations. The Allies concentrated heavily on Java and Singapore, leaving Luzon in a lurch.

Sinagpore: The fort looks very good. Dave probably has to bring in significant reinforcements before he can start serious reductions here.

Today, and over recent weeks, heavy reinforcments arrived at Aden and in India. I have two Aussie divisions, a new Indian division and several brigades, lots of engineers, etc. Right now it seems gracious plenty with which to defend the subcontinent. I'm mulling over whether I want to trigger an Obvert Reaction by transporting reinforcements to Java or even to invade Malaya. Probably not, but I'm looking at it. If Dave was distracted by Russia, I definitely would.

Just skimmed this one but he made a basic error at Singapore by not combining the rgts into full div's before crossing the river. You could have some fun there if he gets careless. In contrast he seems to have overkilled in the PI. Generally that can wait whereas Singers is a much more important capture early on....

In my contest Singapore has finally succumbed on 17 March, 1942. He had to deploy 7 Division to take it and I would say your in much better shape in supplies than I was and your forts are a level higher than mine were. So I would say you will last far longer than I did. However my opponent has not landed in either of Java or Sumatra yet as your opponent has landed in both. So the decision of our Japanese players have been somewhat different with what they decided to take first and with how much. However to get oil out of Palembang you need to take or destroy Singapore's ability to close the choke point between it and NW Borneo. I hope this game does go on ice as you decide to lessen your AAR postings here. I learn something from every post and comparing my contest with those in the same period I am is beneficial.

Dave's really making progress in Java now. As of today, I'm pulling out the Allied fighters. It's too hot and he's devoting a lot of power. I hope it'll still take him two weeks or so to conquer the island.

Singers does seem pretty strong. Forts should reach 5 before he shuts down my fighters. Singers in my hand doesn't prevent him from entering the Bay of Bengal in strength, but it complicates and slows the process for him.

By the way, I'm having a blast with this game. The turns are so utterly fast, in comparison to my late games with Erik and with John III. It's so refreshing to know where everything is and to be able to enter even complex orders in just a half hour or so. What slows down a game beyond belief is massive TFs and Death Star with hundreds of air squadrons. That means micromanagement every turn, in some cases. Tedious but fun.

One of the most fun parts of the game is the ground war in China. Who'd a thunk it?

Did it ever happen to you to view the War in the West interface for air units? You can select ALL the air units you wish from one screen and list, and assign the mission with its details to all of them with one click.

War in the West is the youngest sibling of WITP.

A feature much wished in WITPAE (2?)

2/28/42 to 3/13/42

Dave is methodically tending to Java and the DEI but is largely stymied elsewhere. So overall it's been a good fortnight for the Allies. I'm having a lot of fun, because the game is so much easier and quicker in '42 than in '45.

China: Dave's army hasn't busted through the vulnerable spot east of Sian yet. He's bringing in reinforcement. I am too, but my guys are slower and less plentiful. I think he'll bust through, which will create major problems for me. So I'm attending to defenses in depth as best I can.

Burma: Dave has conquered through Schewebo but hasn't pushed further, towards Myitkyina where the Burma Division is digging in. He also hasn't taken Lashio, though my defenses there are smoke and mirrors.

Singapore: SigInt keeps reporting reinforcements inbound, but Dave hasn't done anything here. I've even triggered fort building again, just in case there's time. Now at 6.13.

Java: I still hold Batavia and Soerabaja. The former will fall soon. The latter may hold another ten to twenty days. I've begun recalling all subs to refuel them (so that they aren't caught without fuel when the end does come, though Singers still has fuel).

KB: Disappeared from Java about four days ago. My guess is that it's heading for CenPac or SoPac. I'll be watching with interest.

SWPac: No recent enemy advances. A sub is nosing down the coast towards Perth, a first. Queen Elizabeth just took aboard most of Americal Div. at LA, bound for Sydney. (No withdrawals in this game, so I get to keep and use the two Queens....with the attendant risk of losing them, which would be noteworthy).

SoPac: Reinforcements continue to come ashore at Luganville. Dave's patrols are watching raptly. He'll come this way. My hope is that it's post-invasion bonus, so that he has to devote serious resources and time. I don't expect to keep L'ville, but perhaps it'll have a flypaper quality.

CenPac: A Glen-boat still loitering at Christmas Island, which has its full garrison (a Marine RCT) and is building forts. No sign of enemy subs around Midway, which has it's full garrison and forts at 3.75. This will be a fairly tough conquest when the bonus expires in 2+ weeks.

NoPac: Dave's done nothing up here and I've done next to nothing. Kodiak got more combat engineers and Dutch Harbor is about to get a Marine CD unit (I think the one that died at Wake Island).

That lack of withdrawals is really a great thing from a hassle perspective. It also will allow you to put a lot more airplanes in action if losses don't get too big. For instance, having those AVG squadrons around is a great thing.

Cheers,

Didn't realize they are playing with no withdrawals.

My current game is the only one I have ever played with that setting.

Another huge plus is the British carriers stay around for the duration and their carrier fleet continues to grow over time.

China: Dave broke through the MLR east of Sian, as feared. I can cobble together a new line at Sian and in the wooded terrain to the north, but he has an open (but long) road over which he can bring reinforcements. I'm hoping supply will be a limiting issue for him. His breaching army consists of three divisions and seven mixed brigades, with several more units (probably brigades) coming in. I think the divisions are pretty ragged after the tough, prolonged battles in the formerly-contested hex.

Burma: Over the past ten days, I've watched as Dave sent much of his known-schwerpunkt far into Burma, chasing the retreating, rag-tag Allied army. I felt like there was a chance his main bases (Moulmein, Rangoon) might be lightly defended. He has no sea lane open, so supply is probably a bit of an issue. Therefore, about 15 days ago, I began preliminary plans for an invasion - the main thing being to get as many xAPs and ground units to Madras as possible. Everything continued to look good, so I pressed the trigger.

There's no doubt this caught him by surprise. He's recalled a lot of his units from Upper Burma.

But I may end up regretting this, as DS is not particularly strong. There's a real chance the Allies could take their lumps from enemy LBA.

But if this succeeds it complicates Dave's situation enormously. He'll need KB to restore order, and I'm pretty sure it's en route to SoPac. Burma will become a nightmare for him. And the Allies could possibly re-open the Burma Road.

So I feel like trying this is worth the risk.

Beautiful counter-thrust! Looking forward to seeing it play out.
Couple of thoughts:
- Chiang Mai rail terminus is likely the other main supply route. Take that and he will be really forced to eat shoe leather.
- If Lashio is not strongly held, there is a nice dirt road leading there from Myitkyna ....

3/19/22 and 3/20/22

Burma: With just two USN CVs and one RN CV, the approach to Moulmein was a puckering event. The possibility that Dave might be able to load up Rangoon, Moulmein, Tavoy, Chang Mai and Bangkok was frightening, though I felt like he was likely to have serious supply and base force issues.

But, as I noted last time, I felt it was a chance worth taking. I knew Erik's fighter corp had just been engaged in a heavy battle at Singers, so would be tuckered out. And I had an actionable hunch that KB had retired from Java up the Malacca Strait to report for duty eventually in SoPac.

The Allied armada moves forward without any opposition from enemy air on the 19th. On the 20th, Allied troops begin coming ashore without opposition from enemy aircraft. That's a huge relief, but only a modest number of troops come ashore, both at Pegu and at Moulmein.

Enemy troops are moving back from Upper Burma, slowed by Allied air attacks.

Things look good.

Burma: And in pops KB! How did it get here? What am I going to do?

And what's the deal with my little army at Moulmein?

I ran this turn at 4:30 this morning, before leaving on my hiking expedition. It was a bad way to start a day.

Burma: KB makes ten hexes, sinks two xAKLs, and damages one DD. But the Allied fleet, at flank speed, flees successfully. Most combat ships and all carriers are far away now. The merchantmen are in harm's way if Dave uses flank speed, but their also at flank and are beginning to spread out, some going to Madras others to Calcutta.

This is a crazy fur-ball.

On the negative side, there's a decent chance I'm going to lost most or all of my expeditionary army.

On the plus side, Dave is gonna be busy up here for awhile. Other theaters might benefit.

The invasion bonus expires in less than 10 days.

He wasted KB invasion bonus time with the Lexington, now he is wasting it reacting to your moves. When the bonus is over, he will have to do more preparation which should slow him down. Very nicely done, although you probably would rather have the Lady Lex floating as well as all of that time wasted.

The KB might need minor repairs which might wait until upgrade time. That might be another opportunity to make some attacks/raids.

Also, he keeps burning precious fuel . . .

Also I guess, the occasional aggressive move on your part may keep him looking over his shoulder.

I love that fact that you used DM Abdiel, one of my favorite early war ships.

Not only is he burning fuel, but where will KB refuel? You still have Singapore and Medan; I don't think CV's can get into Rangoon or Palembang, so he surely must have tankers trailing KB, or he returns to Java/Miri/Cam Ranh Bay (all a long way away). Find the tankers!
