A very active turn as the IJN is caught near Miri. CA Suzuya and CL Tenryu with five DD meets our BBs first and the IJN gets the better of it. The NC takes a fish and will need some yard time. Fortunately the waves of Allied ships wear down these interlopers, and in the end a strong and expereinced TF with four CL takes out Suzuya after pounding Brunei with a bombardment to keep the air strikes at bay. Another reduction in IJN capacity.

The KB is spotted moving in near the PI. Was this a trap? All Allied TFs will move back under CAP and toward Singers.

On the ground some big battles result in Allied advances. Hue is about to fall in Indochina. Up in North China Chengting is teetering as well, and this will result in a massive breakthrough into the plains, not to mention a lot of wrecked IJA units.

More pain for the IJN as CL Tenryu takes hits from Kingfishers on their retreat. Not much else going on in the air or on the seas, but significant advances in land battles. Hue falls, and IJA troops retreat into the jungles, leaving the rail open to send troops racing forward toward Hanoi.

Chengting takes a another step toward Allied control but the Chinese take heavy disablements as well. Still, this is worth some pain. The Japanese are walking some troops in to reinforce, but I'll send my weaker armoured division out to block that bedside and stall their advance, even though it may take a shot from a couple of divisions that look to be there.

Finally, Medny Island falls to complete the Aleutian campaign.

Armor pushes toward Hanoi.

The bombardments near Kalgan have continued to be strong. Japanese troops did have a 150AV advantage here when these began, and now their AV is less than the Allied troops. Go arty!

On the 24th I tried a long awaited DA at Kluong. These are the troops pushed back from Singers that have been holed up here for many months. Out of supply and diminishing in numbers, they can't hold and the Allies should gain the base soon.

Here is a map of some of the manoeuvres and changes in Manchuria. The IJA was threatened with retreating or being encircled at Tsitsihar, and they chose to fall back this time. Soviet forces will now move to threaten Harbin, then Mutankiang, hoping to encircle yet more IJA troops in forward holding hexes, and then to release more Soviet troops from these positions into central Manchuria. Already the rail is linked and reserves are being sent from Vladivostok to garrison recently captured bases.

On the Western part of this map in Southern Mongolia, complex manoeuvres are taking place to isolate a tank division at Linshi while threatening the nearby base to the West.

Teh 25th is quiet other than forgetting to turn off B-24s hitting Brunei and having them intercepted by the KB, which had just moved in. On the morning of the 26th the Hiyo pays a price though, taking one torpedo from S-44.

The Japanese take a chance I kept my Megs away from Vladivoskok after sweeping yesterday. Unfortunately, I had. Still, the little obsolete Soviet I-16s put up a fight downing a good number of A6M3 before Tojos swooped in to put an end to the fun.

CAP at Tatung jumped all over a strike of Oscar escorted Sallys, downing nearly an entire group of Oscars, but the bombers did get through. Not much damage on the base though.

The biggest news is the fall of Changting. This releases about 4k AV into the plains and should allow Chinese and Russian forces to link up to the Chinese armies South of Sian, and in time, the supply lines moving from the central plains on down.

The Japanese haven't tried for many of the forward airbases, and when they have, have largely been rebuffed. I'm surprised at how well these ragtags groups of fighters are defending Allied territory.

Hiyo takes a fish, and Kaga had taken one not too long ago as well. That's two slower CVs now potentially slowed even more, which could lead to more success for Allied subs. I'll continue to send in the dogs.

Armor? I thought you were British!

Very well done in China. You have shown how maneuver and persistent assault can smash IJA strongpoints and win big. I have had use of the Russians before but never advanced as fast as you have done - masterful! Thanks for bringing us all the action!

I am a naturalised British citizen born and raised in Portland, OR.

I live in Britain. I don't speak or spell in British.

Using the Soviets at this point in the war is ... different. Their troops are very good, and some of the devices top notch, like the katyushas and big siege guns, plus the gaggles of 15cm arty.

The tanks now are VERY fragile though, and there aren't many replacements. Also, there aren't many excess engineer or base force units, so the collaboration with the Chinese has been helpful.

I hadn't realised how vulnerable the IJA can be in China. There are a lot of areas to defend, and if the Chinese are rested, units brought to full strength, and if the first breakthroughs go well, the IJA can really end up on the back foot. The Chinese can invest strongpoints in good defensive territory and then go around in force.

That reminds me of a joke about an englishman living in Portugal. After ten years there none of the locals learned english and so he complains about having nobody to talk to.

On the 27th the IJAAF continues to attack Tatung. I think he may have accidentally left some bombers on here. With no escort they're crushed and the Allied pilots accumulate good exp and kills.

The Soviet tanks blocking reinforcing IJA units near Chengting paid the price today, getting kicked back with huge losses by two IJA IDs. I'll aim now to envelop those divisions by moving down the tray road SW from Chengting.

In a bloody battle on Malaya, Kluong is finally captured. Allied units are worn out, and these will take some time off in Singers while others move in to clean up the remaining IJA units.

Near Kukong the IJA pulls back some divisions that were in that base to defend the enveloping move of some Chinese Corps. We try a DA which gets a 1:2 with heavy disablements. It's a setback, as it'll be a month or so before these are back to good health, but more are coming up fro the rear and will try to leapfrog around to the hex behind near Canton, while another army is moving on Wuchang from Kwellin.

After about a month stuck outside Loyang, the Chinese finally push out the IJA block with the help of a few days of intensive bombing. Troops will now move on Loyang itself.

Allied armor also tries the first attack against the Viet Min at hanoi, reducing forts and weakening the defence. it'll be within a few weeks now to join Allied forces in Indochina to the Chinese rail network and bring masses of supply, engineers and base forces into China. British and Indian troops follow along aiming at Hong Kong.

Hanoi falls. Once this pesky Viet min unit is reduced the door is open to China!

In Manchuria the IL-2 do some good work. Troops have crossed to the clear hex near Harbin and are now moving toward the base.

Nov 1, 1942

November!

The KB is being hunted. Another almost today. Only 2 torps launched by the Trout against Shokaku. Hmmmm.

In other news, troops shock into Ayuthia and vaporise some Thai units. Bangkok is nearly ours. Connecting the dots now.

Up in Manchuria the Japanese go all out to bomb the units surrounding Harbin. They're very effective, and I'll LR CAP with MiGs tomorrow. See if I can catch anything. The main body of troops is marching unmolested into the base though, and should be there by the 3rd. Our IL-2 strikes go in to hurt a naval guard sharing one of the blocking hexes. I really like this plane now, They ducked some Oscars and even shot one down, and got through to complete their mission.

the KB is hanging around Borneo for some reason I can't determine. It's very persistent in spite of taking a torp to Hiyo already, and II can't see any reason it's here. There aren't other TFs to protect, and subs are blocking all retreat paths in numbers. I'll now converge again to see what they can do.

The Japanese switch targets to the other blocking unit outside Harbin and devastate a Soviet tank brigade. Very annoying. I'll keep trying to catch them.

Our planes answer in China by hitting troops at Ichang to soften them up for a Chinese shock with one Corps across the river. Other units only tried a DA, and results were good at 4:1, dropping forts from 3 to 2 and getting equal losses. This will put lots of pressure on the central area of Japanese control in China.

I've also just invested Wuchang to the West of Canton and should take that base tomorrow. Units are flooding around several Japanese holding positions across the map and will aim to encircle those spots before constricting in. The rail has been cut in several spots and is about to be crossed again East of Loyang. Japanese units sitting forward will be vulnerable fro now on as supply begins to flow in and the Chinese send forward reserves.

Armored units are still pounding away at Hanoi and should break through soon.

This shows a bit of what's happening in Northern and West central China. The Chinese are moving, ndtehre are a lot of them. Even more will be released if I can open some of the blocking hexes from the rear side. As you can see here the goal is to join forces around Loyang/Keifeng.

Just South of Chengting I'll also encircle (and eventually destroy) two divisions. It's pretty much too late for them to get out. This is a done deal.

Here is a shot of Manchuria with the selected hex showing the big stack moving into Harbin. The base can't be reinforced, and unless it has level 9 forts it shouldn't last long. Troops are moving in to siege Taonan, which has 500AV of Japanese troops including one tank division. I might be able to win this one though.

This AAR is now current! Whew!

That was quite a catch-up, doing almost a month of fairly intense turns in a week. So now if you're reading both sides (which I would always encourage) things might make more sense.

On the 3rd the KB stays in the area of Brunei. Just far enough out of range for any CAP traps around Singkawang, and between the sub concentrations I've set up. I'll keep these out of detection range mostly, with only a few moving in to harass.

Several important breakthroughs on the day. Hanoi is free of enemy troops after the Viet Min unit surrendered. The next base on along the rail (forgetting the name) also auto-flipped to Allied control, so I can immediately rail to the edge of China.

Ichang fell catastrophically, with the 13th division taking heavy losses. Chinese units will rest for a few before pursuing, but it looks like some of those troops are already marching back toward Hankow.

Moulmein also falls to open the rest of the Burma/Thai border area. It'll be interesting to think about this game without Burma involved at all. India is now a backwater.

I flew Soviet paratroopers toward Tsinan today and they nearly got the base, lowering forts from 4 to 3, and getting a 15-11 1:1 result. I'll keep trying in case he gives this up, but he should be able to reinforce.

The KB is being hunted. Another almost today. Only 2 torps launched by the Trout against Shokaku. Hmmmm.

I have noticed that my subs tend to get conservative with their torpedoes when they get low on torps - about one per tube left. Could be that Trout's forward tubes are short on torps even if the aft tubes are fully stocked.
Of course, when your sub surfaces to hit an xAKL with gunfire, it will often fire off the entire suite of torps in an effort to hit it ....

As for KB's intentions - it moved down there after one or two of your fast BBs took a torpedo each, so I think he was hoping to find a cripple. Having moved there, he might be reluctant to steam through your schools of subs again!

I did think it was an ambush at first, but it's just been hanging out. I just wonder if something else is happening I don't notice yet.

Nov 4, 1942

A wild day in the air, both good and bad for the Allies. The 4Es hit several targets, including a big raid at Hong Kong that was supposed to go the day before. I took a risk and left it turned on, and it was rough, but paid off with the sinking of at least one good I-boat and a number of planes destroyed on the fields. An AR was also severely damaged and might go under.

Haiphong was a more difficult situation, as a surprise CAP downed about 4 Lib II attacking troops in the base as prep for an Allied shock river crossing. I also tried for Tsinan along the rail in the NE plains of China with Soviet paratroops, but couldn't quite take the base. A few 4E were lost trying to prep that assault, as CAP appeared suddenly. I'll keep that one on for one more day in case he can't reinforce immediately.

Around Harbin the noose tightens, and Japanese bombers take much heavier losses coming in low against dedicated AA units. One of the two massive IDs here vaporises a naval guard unit and will now move into Harbin for the decisive blow in a few days. We tried a limited assault and got a 1:2 but with light losses on both sides.

It looks like the IJA has moved back from one of the blocking positions on the North front just near Mutankiang. This will allow a move forward for the largest stack I have on this border, as well as a reinforcement of a secondary stack. I also see that it may be possible to move on Lenki to isolate Mutankiang from it's rail connection, limiting further reinforcement. I know most players hate the ground model but I love the abstraction of bedside control, terrain, and movement. This game is all about land combat and I'm finding a lot of enjoyment in using the Soviets as per their usual doctrines of deep penetration and encirclement.

On the 5th the Chinese take Loyang, held by only two brigades. The IJA is turning tail all across the map now. Kiukiang is also taken South of Wuchang. Troops have left changsha and gone back to Wuchang and Hankow.

On the 6th the Chinese and Soviets take Anyang to open the door to Kaifeng. This is really the deathnell for a lot of IJA troops caught to the North, and the encirclement will begin once the Chinese from the other side take Chengting, which they're moving on from two sides. This will link the two armies, let supply flood through, and trap those IJA units to the North.

You have had losses but it seems like much less than Japan. Are you on track to Autovic in early 1943?

I have no idea really. I'm just under 2:1 now, so I don't know what getting these troops in China and the rest will do. I want to get a 43 strat bombing campaign going. Maybe the first ever?

MiGs get a hold of some Japanese bombers up North, finally. Just dribbles though as they were set to take on sweeps.

Had the favour returned a bit on the 8th, but Harbin falls, so it's all worth it. The first of the big four Manchurian bases to be captured.

Here is a map of Manchuria now. I'll be aiming to move forward again quickly. Taonan, Yenki and Kirin are some of the next major targets.

In SW China everything is aiming toward Canton and Hong Kong. In the center, the IJA have pulled back to Wuchow and Hankow. It'll be fun to aim for encirclement there.
