I recently reinstalled the game on a new computer and when I try and start up any scenario I get an error when it is trying to load "land unit data". The error message says: "Error creating new game. Try exiting the program to clear the memory." I do that and I keep getting the same error. Tried running it on admin mode too and same problem.

I am attempting to play solitaire and I saved the bug report to e-mail if that would help. I am running the 2.9.5 beta.

System Specs:

Windows 10 x64 build 17134
12x Intel(R) Core i7-8700k CPU @3.70GHz
NVIDIA GTX 1070

What version did you upgrade from? There were changes to the game data files around version 2.3.4 or so. If your old version was older than that then first do a full install of the public release 2.7.1 from the members site. Or it may be the same problem as here: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4608721 see post #9.

As was suggested, you can start the game with an earlier version (i.e. one after 2.3.4) and then continue it using 2.9.5. This means holding on to an earlier differently named EXE and launching it from your WiF game directory or with a desktop shortcut created just for it.

I did a fresh install with both main files from the members area first and received the error. So I went and found the 2.9.5 patch and updated to that and still got the same error. So it was a fresh install with no previous versions on this computer.

It sounds like the install did not complete properly since you had the problem even before 2.9.5. The 2.7.1 update zip file is 794,904 KB and unzips to an EXE which does the install. See if yours is that size.

Yes the size is the same as you posted. I uninstalled, deleted the old folder too. Downloaded the set up version and the 2.7.1 update, both showing the correct file size, re-installed, ran the game and got the same exact error when trying to load a scenario.

I even installed it to my C drive this time instead of my D drive which I did the first time to see if that made a difference.

*Edit* I also tried running the game in compatibility mode from Windos 8 down to Vista service pack 2 and still the same error.

Sorry I've not been able to help. I'll suggest a couple more ideas but not sure they'll do any good.

1. Check your existing install directory and see if you are missing any folders. Below is a picture showing a drill down from the top directory to the Unit Data folder. I'm sure I have more files (items) in the top level directory than needed for a full install. The folders and others should match.

2. 2.7.1 does a full install of all you need other than the 2.9.5 EXE. You could try just installing that. Don't run it from your desktop, put it in a folder first. There have been problems getting a full install done from a desktop zip because when the install program is unzipping files it can't find the "next" folder because there's no parent folder.

3. Do you have virus protection software that you can temporarily turn off when doing the install?

My file structure looks exactly like yours.

I uninstalled, put the files into a folder, unpacked them there even using 7z this time instead of WinRaR to see if that helped. Installed everything (minus 2.9.5) and still same error. I disabled the virus protection too and still no change.

I'm at a loss as to what is causing the hang up.

Is it worth e-mailing the bug report to the e-mail address provided in a sticky on the tech support page?

I am pretty much out of ideas on how to solve this. You could check if you can open a saved game, just to see if that works. I know you'd done a fresh install but there are several recent threads in Tech Support that have Barbarossa game files attached. You could download one of those and see if you can open it. A little more searching and there ought to be a Global War save game you could find and download and try to open.

There were updates to MAP data that it appears you do not have included.

Attached is the zipped file of the folder for the current MAP data.

---

In general, when doing a full reinstall, you should start with the download (or disks) then click on the Check for Update button on the opening World in Flames screen. That will bring all the game files up-to-date.

Only then should you replace the MWIF.exe from the members page: a public beta or a hot patch.

If you do them out of order, the replacement MWIF.exe will have a higher version number than the Check for Update, and the update will says something like: "you have the latest version", without bringing the data files up-to-date.

Please, let me know if replacing the MAP data solves this problem for you.

Thank you for providing the files. I did another re-install from scratch with the base version. I tried to run the "check for updates" off the launcher menu and it does not work. I then downloaded the updater fix on here and followed those instructions to the letter. Tried to update the game and the updater is still not working.

So I have not tried using the files you provided yet. Will those work even if I can't update through the launcher?

If you have 2.7.1 installed, then you can check if you have the provided files or just copy them over to the same folders (clicking on Yes to Replace a file of the same name). After that, the only thing you need to do to get to 2.9.5 is replace the EXE.

I upgraded to 2.7.1 and then copied all of the files over that Steve provided. Sadly it did not work. I still get the same error.

Perhaps there is another application running thats consuming too much memory for MWIF to run.

To find out, try running msinfo32.exe, just click your start button and type 'msinfo32' you will see an Application in the menu called 'System Information' run that.

When you do you should see something like the image below. Tell us how much Available Physical Memory this shows, The part where I have circled in red.

This might be a long shot, but I had to install the game on the C partition of the hard disk. On the D partition it refused to run on my machine...

can you pm me your report spec?

How to get a DirectX Diagnostic file:

1. click on "START"
2. click "run"
3. type in "dxdiag" and click "OK"
4. check through the tabs and perform all tests
5. click "Save all Information..." and save the text file to a location of your choice

We prefer that DxDiag files be posted as message attachments rather than pasted into the body of the post.

once the report has been made, just attach it to your post as it's a Txt file which is then permitted to attach to the forum.

as a new member, welcome btw you may not be able to post it here, so pm me it and i'll paste if you like and look and see if anything sticks out
and offer what advice i can to help

installing and running the game as install as admin and run as admin on the default installer and updater should set up the correct file permissions to load and run, unless running none default AV and or firewall programs on windows 10 etc.

so download the latest version and patch, right click install as admin then right click run as admin once installed to the default path

Just bought the game today, installed and updated. Same problem, when I try to start a game I have the message "Error creating new game. Try exiting the program to clear the memory."

Replacing MAP and UNIT data didnt solve the problem.

What are your system specifications?

World in Flames generates the error message your reported and that happens under a wide range of circumstances:

1 - One of the first things the program does to create a new game is to load unit data. Do you see the text "Loading Unit Data"?

2 - Next up is the text "Loading Unit Graphics".

3 - Later you should see "Setting Political Relationships"

4 - And more message get displayed as the program goes through the numerous steps to create a new game. Any information you can provide as to what you see on the screen will help us figure out what the problem is.

Which brings me back to my first question: How much memory does your system have? What operating system are you running?

---

World in Flames does not use DirectX graphics. Instead it uses [the more bland and primative] bitmap graphics. I didn't want the code to rely on Microsoft's ever-changing DirectX graphics routines. DirectX now covers sound and music, so maybe the suggestion to look at the DirectX Diagnostic file might shed some light on the difficulty you are having. However, I have never used it.

I had couple of more thoughts about this.

Where did you install the game? That is, which file folder on which disk? It is possible that the program (MWIF.exe) is running from a different location than where the various data files are stored.

In keeping with that thought, how do you initiate the program? Are you clicking on a Shortcut?

Other simple checks are:
1 - Do you see the very first opening screen where you can "Check for Updates"?
2 - Can you run any of the videos? [Just see if there start correctly.]
3 - Can you execute Play Game? That should bring up MWIF.exe's opening Splash Screen.
4 - Can you execute any of the Picture and Text Tutorials?
5 - Can you restore a saved game? [Try Barbarossa. It should have a Fast Start saved game.]

Thank you.

All of this seems normal.

Which brings me back to my other questions in posts #25 and #26 in this thread.

My current best guess is that the program was installed somewhere unusual - separate from all the data files. This could happen if the player put MWIF.exe on the Desktop and had all the other requisite MWIF files in a folder somewhere. The easy way to correct this is to place MWIF.exe in the same folder as the other files and create a ShortCut that points to MWIF.exe. The ShortCut can then be placed on the Desktop (where it will be easy to access).

#25 - New game stops at "loading Land Unit Data"

#26 - 1 - Do you see the very first opening screen where you can "Check for Updates"? Yes, no problem with that
2 - Can you run any of the videos? [Just see if there start correctly.] All play without problem
3 - Can you execute Play Game? That should bring up MWIF.exe's opening Splash Screen. Yes
4 - Can you execute any of the Picture and Text Tutorials? Yes
5 - Can you restore a saved game? [Try Barbarossa. It should have a Fast Start saved game.] No, program crashes

All the files are in the same folder (default route installation), no files apart. I tryed with the shortcut that the install program creates and also with mwif.exe directly
