Turn 18. Jul/Aug 1942. Axis #3.

Actions. Japan - land, Germany - land, Italy - land.

Japan. China. Strategic Bombing. Japanese bombers go back to Chungking and attempt to finish up what they started by knocking out the remaining PP. They miss.

Turn 18. Jul/Aug 1942. Axis #3.

Japan. Northern China. communist Chinese Front (CCF).

1. Japan captures the open-city of Yenan. No reaction by the US.

2. A potential assault on Sian looks very tempting. However, the best that the Japanese could muster was approximately +6, which, which gives an 80% chance of taking the city, only gives a 10% chance of the attackers remaining fully organized and a 64% that they would be fully disorganize. Also, this attack would carry a 7% chance that 3 of the 4 attacking armies would be lost. Given that the axis have at worse 2 more fine weather impulses, and more likely they'll get 4, this assault this early in the turn just doesn't make sense, especially with the Japanese flanking the communist northern flank. So, maneuver is the name of the game right now.

Turn 18. Jul/Aug 1942. Axis #3.

Euro-Axis. Yugoslavia.

Germans and Italians deal hardly with a Yugoslavian partisan.

Turn 18. Jul/Aug 1942. Axis #3.

Euro-Axis. The Eastern Front (1/3).

An out of supply Soviet garrison army is successfully ground struck and then over run by a German mech corps.

Turn 18. Jul/Aug 1942. Axis #3.

Euro-Axis. The Eastern Front (2/3).

The axis make no additional attacks on the Eastern Front. Again, odds while sometimes fair were just too low this early in the turn to risk disorganization. Instead, and especially in the north towards Perm and the Ural mountains, the axis decide to push at near full speed to the east. Like their axis partner Japan in northern China, the Euro-axis decide for now that maneuver and gaining territory without combat is much more effective than fighting pitch battles, which would be playing into the Soviets hands in terms of delay and disorganization.

Turn 18. Jul/Aug 1942. Axis #3.

Euro-Axis. The Eastern Front (3/3). The Arctic Front.

Two German infantry corps start their redeployment to Finland and to position themselves to be able to attack Leningrad from the north. This combine German and Finnish army will try to make an assault this turn to take Leningrad. The odds will be against them but even if they get a 30% or higher chance they plan to take it.

If you get a zero strength partisan that can't instantly do something useful like cut off a resource, stick it in a forest where it has a defense strength of one. Then it can't be obliterated by weak forces at no cost.

Turn 17. Jul/Aug 1942. Allied #4.

USSR. Desperate. There's not much between the Germans and Perm except for a lot of real estate and a couple of infantry armies. Stalin is putting pressure on Churchill to do something, anything to help.

Turn 17. Jul/Aug 1942. Allied #4.

Western Allies. Italian Coast (2/3). Messina falls without loss or any disorganization. Sicily is cleared of all axis. But, Churchill has a daring operation in mind and orders an amphibious invasion of Salerno to establish a presence on the mainland and try to take some pressure off of Stalin.

Turn 17. Jul/Aug 1942. Allied #4.

Western Allies. Italian Coast (3/3). The Salerno landings go flawlessly. Now, the question is can the Brits expand their bridgehead, or even keep their bridgehead. The RN used all their shore bombardment to support this landing and the attack on Messina so no more bombardment, especially defensive, is available this turn.

Turn 17. Jul/Aug 1942. Axis #5.

Weather. The weather roll is a 10, which doesn't really change much around the globe. However, if does result in a +1 modifier, which if another 10 is rolled means rain in the arctic and impulse advance of 2. Needlessly to say those are long odds but a miracle that the allies are hoping to receive.

Turn 17. Jul/Aug 1942. Axis #5.

Japan. Northern China. Ground Strike and Land Combat. The Japanese army group in the north aided by the Imperial Japanese airforce achieves a major victory and breakthrough against the communist Chinese northwest of Sian. The capture of Sian is next on Japan's list.

Turn 17. Jul/Aug 1942. Axis #5.

Japan. Chinese/Asian Fronts. All the action this turn has been in the North against Mao and his communist. In the South, seasonal monsoons have stopped both sides in their tracks.

Turn 17. Jul/Aug 1942. Axis #5.

Euro-Axis. The Italian Front. German and Italian ground forces race to hem in the newly created British bridgehead at Salerno. Though desired by Hitler and Mussolini, an attempted counterattack (< 4 A) would likely have be disastrous and was not attempted.

Turn 17. Jul/Aug 1942. Axis #5.

Turn 17. Jul/Aug 1942. Axis #5.

Euro-Axis. The Eastern Front. Land Combat (2/5). Well, this attack went wrong for the Germans from the start. The Red Air Force manages to shoot down a Stuka air group attempting to provide offensive ground support. And to add insult to injury the Red Air Force manages to get one of their own bomber groups through to provide defensive ground support. Then, the Wehrmacht launches the worse blitz attack possible (i.e., they miss the fractional and roll a "2"). von Bock loses the "elite" Hermann Goring armor division and his army is stopped cold (i.e., attackers disorganized).

Western Allies. The Italian Front. Will the RN off the Italian Coast low on shells and unable to provide shore bombardment, the Brits are able to get any decent odds anywhere. And not wanting to risk losses for small chances of winning, Great Britain decides to hold pat in Sicily, Salerno and with their three divisions at sea and ready to land/invade on a moments notice.
