Turn 17. Jul/Aug 1942. Allied #6.

USSR. O-Chit. With the axis pushing reckless forward towards the Urals and being sloppy in protecting their flanks in the South, the USSR decides the time is ripe to launch a counteroffensive in the South. Koniev plays the only Soviet o-chit and launches a counterattack against the forces pushing on Stalingrad and vicinity.

Turn 17. Jul/Aug 1942. Allied #6.

USSR. Counterattack. Stalingrad Front. The counterattack goes near flawless and results in the destruction of von Bock's HQ and two German infantry corps. The only blemish was letting the elite XLVI Wehrmacht mech corps get away. That is, it was shatter when it should have been destroyed because of the low land combat roll of 3.

Turn 17. Jul/Aug 1942. Allied #6.

USSR. HQ Reorg. With Koniev becoming disorganized at the end of the impulse because he was used with the o-chit to double land combat factors, his HQ is used to reorganize a Soviet bomber group that is on standby to provide support against the expected German counterattack to attempt to right the situation in the South.

Soviet Rail. Almost forgot on Soviet rail. The Soviets rail another factory east. This time, and for the first time, a factory in Siberia. They also rail a cavalry corps from Tehran to near the front.

Turn 17. Jul/Aug 1942. Axis #7.

Weather. The weather remains the same (i.e., fine everywhere except for storms in the north monsoon, or southern China.). However, a 9 is rolled, which is modified to 10, due to the +1 from last weather roll. This means that there's still a 10% chance of rain in the arctic if the turn continues that long (72% chance that it will).

Turn 17. Jul/Aug 1942. Axis #7.

Actions. Japan - land, Germany - land, Italy - land.

Japan. Northern China. communist Chinese. The Sian land combat goes very badly with the Japanese rolling the dreaded 14. This loss shuts down Japan's land combat operations for the rest of the turn.

Turn 17. Jul/Aug 1942. Axis #7.

Euro-Axis. The Italian Front. The axis, again were tempted to attack but with odds < 6 assault, the attack would be playing into the allied hands. So, the axis bring more ground and air forces to bear around the allied bridgehead at Salerno.

Turn 17. Jul/Aug 1942. Axis #7.

Euro-Axis. The Eastern Front. Germany and her allies launch 6 land combats this impulse. These six land combats include attacks from 4 German and 1 Finnish HQ, and HQ support from 3.

Euro-Axis. Land Combat (1/6). Gorki, USSR. Victory here makes the next land combat automatic by breaking supply to an adjacent disorganized infantry army.

RAF Strategic Bombing. Paris. Not see how happy the Free French are about the Brits bombing Paris, but the RAF did managed to knock 1 PP off of German production.

Turn 17. Jul/Aug 1942. Allied #8.

USSR. Eastern Europe.

End of Turn. The Soviets were desperately hoping that the turn would end, but it doesn't with a roll of 4 when < 3 was required for the turn to end.

Well, maybe the Soviets will get lucky with the next weather roll. They need a 10.

Weather. Nope. The weather roll is a 5, modified to a 6. Weather remains the same and the roll modified is reset from +1 to 0. Will this turn ever end?

Northern China. communist Chinese. Not much happening on this front either.

Why? The Japanese are disorganized and have one unit per hex. A counterattack was called for! You could have destroyed at least two more units in the north. You kill the Formosa MIL and the INF will be out of supply and destroyed too...

Next Allied impulse you retake Yenan and kill of a Japanese plane and get your defenses back up (or you might even attack another disorganized Japanese unit). And that would end the Japanese offensive against the Communists...

This is a long summer turn...

Thanks! Does look like Mao indeed missed his chance for a counterattack. If the turn continues long enough, which the allies are hoping it doesn't, he may get a second chance.

Good. These kind of opportunities are pretty rare in China...

Good for the USSR: The Red Army's successes in the south threaten all the German units from Rostov to Stalingrad and further south with annihilation; that demands a large transfer of units from the northern sector to respond.

Bad for the USSR: It looks like the Red Army's unit density in the north is too paltry for those successes to matter.

Japan. Chinese Front. The Japanese army group in Northern China does look a bit vulnerable. It was a good thing Mao didn't go on the offensive when he had the chance. Mao's missed opportunity is Japan's advantage, for now at least.

Turn 17. Jul/Aug 1942. Axis #9.

The Italian Front. Kesselring and his HQ-I are pulled out of Italy and railed to Southern Russia in order to restore the situation there. von Bock, recovering in hospital after his HQ-I was shattered last impulse, will assume command in Italy next turn. The Germans are also planning to move some armor and mech units to Italy in order to "blitz" the allied bridgehead at Salerno, which is a port w/o a city.

The allies through Ultra know this and intended to swap out the Royal marine corps and two divisions holding the bridgehead with armor and mech units of their own. The situation will be decided by who can get their armor and mech to Salerno first.
