ORIGINAL: kevinkins Would/could China out bid the US for Diego Garcia? https://asianmilitaryreview.com/2019/06/the-strategic-utility-of-diego-garcia/ "Robert Heinlein and Issac Asimov, were tasked by Admiral Ernest King to help invent the combat information center (CIC)." https://www.usni.org/magazines/proceedings/2019/june/cyber-where-radar-was-1942 Found some vague references that this is true. Would be an interesting research project to flesh out the details. Kevin I don't recall any direct mention of that by Robert Heinlein in any of his books. I do know that Heinlein, Isaac Asmiov and L. Sprague De Camp worked together at the Philadelphia naval yard during WWII. I also know that Heinlein was a fellow classmate and shipmate of then Captain Laning who was an important player in the development of the CIC so it would be possible that there was some influence. Captain Laning credits E.E "Doc" Smith ( a friend and collaborator of Heinlein's) with providing the inspiration for the CIC the U.S. Navy would adopt. It is very possible that Heinlein linked the two up. quote:
In a June 11, 1947, letter[77] to Smith from John W. Campbell (the editor of Astounding, where much of the Lensman series was originally published). In it, Campbell relayed Captain Cal Laning's[78] acknowledgment that he had used Smith's ideas for displaying the battlespace situation (called the "tank" in the stories) in the design of the United States Navy's ships' Combat Information Centers. "The entire set-up was taken specifically, directly, and consciously from the Directrix. In your story, you reached the situation the Navy was in—more communication channels than integration techniques to handle it. You proposed such an integrating technique and proved how advantageous it could be. You, sir, were 100% right. As the Japanese Navy—not the hypothetical Boskonian fleet—learned at an appalling cost." BTW, for those interested here is a link to U.S. Navy CIC manual dated 1945
