That saw is long enough to cut down that tree? Must've taken them a couple of weeks.

Something about this thread that makes me think of forestry.

I don't see the connection between sawing trees and beautiful women. Must be something wrong with me. (But you all knew that).

The casual reader might conclude that when Makee Learn looked at the photos of those beautiful women it brought big wood to mind. I dunno if that's true but it's possible.

It's more likely that Makee was being clever, referring to a legendary event of minor proportions, when one of my AARs fixated on trees for page after page of scintillating (to two or three of us) discussion.

Marilyn Monroe was very popular here:

quote:

In February 1954, actress Marilyn Monroe traveled to Korea to entertain the troops. Right before she flew into Korea, Monroe was in Japan on her honeymoon with Joe DiMaggio. She flew alone to Korea as DiMaggio was still attending to business in Japan. In the four days Monroe spent with the troops she performed ten shows. She later said that performing in Korea helped her get over her fear of live performances as she entertained audiences that totaled more than 100,000 troops. She remarked that the trip “was the best thing that ever happened to me. I never felt like a star before in my heart. It was so wonderful to look down and see a fellow smiling at me.”

http://www.historybyzim.com/2013/06/marilyn-monroe-entertaining-troops-1954/

A youtube video, look at how she is dressed in February in Korea and then look at how the audience is dressed. There was also a nice breeze there as well.

A bit late to the thread, but I would include a French beauty from the movie "The Time Machine". Not #1, but something about exotic eyes and high cheekbones draws me in every time. That's why Audrey Hepburn is my number 1 (but only when she is not smoking).
I give you Yvette Mimieux as a candidate ...

BBfanboy - that's a lovely lady.

Regarding the crosscut saw in the photo up-page, it appears that it consists of two 10-foot crosscut saws welded together. I wonder how they kept the tree from "pinching" the saw as they cut through.

Who's the iconic actress, the iconic actor, and which movie? (No fair googling.)

P.S. This is a great movie, starring another iconic actor (not pictured) in his first well-known role.

That's hilarious, MakeeLearn.

I suppose they did it by driving wedges or shimmies in the cut behind the saw.

Yup, Warspite, you have the actors right. (BTW, Leslie Howard was a spectacularly gifted actor.)

I won't give the name of the movie (or the unpictured iconic actor) until others have had a chance to chime in. It's a movie worth seeing, for those who aren't familiar with it. B&W, 1936, set in one small locale, and dependent on great acting (not CGI) to make it all work.

The same idea of using wedges to fall a tree but this tree is much smaller:

how to fall a tree with a wedge and a chainsaw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fvMELItvTY

There would be more wedges and probably much thicker ones as well. You might even have men pounding the wedges while the other men used the saw.

The Petrified Forest? But where is Bacall?

Bacall isn't in The Petrified Forest. You must be thinking of Key Largo, which is a palm-tree-n-hurricane version of The Petrified Forest.

RangerJoe is correct - it is The Petrified Forest.

Exactly! I was looking for a huge back-cut notch to ensure the tree fell in the desired direction and did not pinch the saw as it worked. Where is Paul Bunyan's axe!
