Canoerebel -> Men Lacking Judgment (6/21/2019 4:05:53 PM)

Over the past few days, I've stumbled across a couple of YouTube videos regarding beautiful actresses of the black-and-white film era. One ranked the top 20, the other the top 40. The Top 20 had Ingrid Bergman at something like 13, which I found utterly unbelievable. There may have been somebody more beautiful than she but there weren't a dozen. The Top 40 had her ranked 36th! What?

Both lists ranked Liz Taylor and Vivien Leigh as 1-2 and 2-1, respectively. I'm not a big fan of Taylor, but Leigh was a beauty. But I thought Mankind had universally agreed that Ingrid Bergman was the most beautiful creation ever.

Helen Ann Richardson Khan (born Helen Ann Richardson on 21 November 1938), popularly known as only Helen (Hindi pronunciation: [heːleːn]), is a Burma-born Indian film actress and dancer working in Hindi films. She has received two Filmfare awards, has appeared in over 700 films and is often cited as the most popular nautch dancer of her time.

Mamie van Doren to the top! Because she can't be... topless, right?

Canoerebel -> RE: Men Lacking Judgment (6/21/2019 4:34:19 PM)

The lists are interesting. First, we can all agree that being an actress implies a certain level of comeliness. These are lovely ladies. Second, tastes are subjective. Third, tastes change with time, as fashions change, appreciation for types of figures change, hair styles, etc.

Viewing the list, there were some I wasn't very familiar with that were undeniably gorgeous. Claudia Cardinale comes to mind. There were some great names that simply never moved me, including Marlena Dietrich, Gretta Garbo and Rita Hayworth. There were some that received deservedly high rankings, such as Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, and Oliva DeHaviland. There were a few I was glad (and a bit surprised) to see listed, including Katherine Hepburn and Dorothy Lamour. But how did Ingrid Bergman fall to 36th? I'd think that any living male, age six to 106, who viewed Casablanca would be forever smitten.

geofflambert -> RE: Men Lacking Judgment (6/21/2019 4:45:45 PM)

Gina Lollobrigida.

Anne Bancroft killed me in The Graduate and other things.

Sophia Loren is number one on any list.

Lucy goes to Casablanca

Yaab -> RE: Men Lacking Judgment (6/21/2019 4:55:09 PM)

Is young Alain Delon on the list? He was more feminine than those Weimar freaks Dietrich and Garbo.

Anachro -> RE: Men Lacking Judgment (6/21/2019 4:57:09 PM)

Lauren Bacall is probably my favorite of the golden era.

Canoerebel -> RE: Men Lacking Judgment (6/21/2019 5:00:56 PM)

Remember, these lists were B&W era (actually, they were pre-1960, so basically the same).

Gina Lolabrigida was on one or both lists, as were Lauren Bacall and Sophia Lauren (the latter highly ranked in both). I don't think I saw Ann Bancroft on either.

What part of mankind would that be...?

Black and White era? Yes Vivien Leigh was exquisite. But then so were:

Olivia de Havilland and.....

ROMA VICTORIA! CLEAVAGE MAXIMUS!

Canoerebel -> RE: Men Lacking Judgment (6/21/2019 5:34:54 PM)

Olivia DeHaviland made both lists, highly ranked. I think Jean Simmons made one or both lists. :)

Some that didn't make it that arguably should have: Myrna Loy, Paulette Goddard, Margaret Lockwood.

Of course Grace Kelly deserves more than a passing mention....

Polish B-W era lasted until well into 1960s, probably due to color film shortage. Here is Polish actress Barbara Kwiatkowska, aka Barbara Lass.

Canoerebel -> RE: Men Lacking Judgment (6/21/2019 6:00:26 PM)

Yup. Grace Kelly was prominently ranked in both lists - 10th or better, I think. You could make a case for her in the top 3. Probably there are at least ten that would make a suitable top three, if that makes sense.

Let's see: Grace Kelly, Ingrid Bergman, Audrey Hepburn, Olivia DeHaviland, Vivien Leigh, Sophia Lauren, Jean Simmons, Lauren Bacall, Claudia Cardinale, Kim Novak.

I think I'd work from the first four to come up with a list of the top three. :)

Yaab -> RE: Men Lacking Judgment (6/21/2019 6:06:02 PM)

Doesn't Kim Novak belong to the color era?

Ahh the impossibly beautiful Audrey Hepburn - how did I forget her? And don't forget Joan Fontaine

Oh my, Claudia Cardinale - now there's a blast from the, rather gorgeous, past...

Canoerebel -> RE: Men Lacking Judgment (6/21/2019 6:17:29 PM)

Joan Fontaine and Olivia deHaviland were sisters, as I'm sure you know very well! Two beauties in one family.

And no wonder Gone With the Wind was so popular - two "top ten" actresses (deHaviland and Vivien Leigh) in a single flick.

She was a crossover, as were a number of others.

Thus far, nobody's mentioned Marilyn Monroe. She was ranked in the middle of both lists. She never caught my eye, and now she kind of seems like a caricature due to her fame.

Marilyn Monroe was certainly attractive. However, her original persona before she went with the dyed blond sexpot look was just stunningly beautiful.

As for your original complaint ... only 40 places and many beautiful women. Some were bound to be slighted.

Anachro -> RE: Men Lacking Judgment (6/21/2019 6:31:20 PM)

Marily Monroe was a might fine specimen and should be definitely placed in the top ten of any list. Blonde or not.
