Hmm, I just noticed that when I inch (hex by hex) my sub next to an enemy carrier, the position of which is hidden, but remembered from its attack last turn, I not only still get "enemy contact!" (which is fine), but I also lose my ability to strike! I.e. my strike-count goes immediately down from 1 to 0 (despite no combat having occurred).

Is that intended and (if yes) has that always been the case? For it doesn't really feel right to me as I knew where the vessel was and didn't just "bump" into it. If the "surprise" acount penalties apply, at the very least I should still be able to attack.

Edit: I just had the same situation with another sub contacting "hidden" enemy cruisers, but there I wasn't deprived of my strike ... so was the earlier encounter with the carrier a bug? (If so, it is one I could reproduce.)

If you have a saved turn where I can reproduce it please do send this to me so I can take a look... send to support@furysoftware.com and you can use WeTransfer to send it if your email service doesn't like the large files.

Thanks,
Hubert

Had to use WeTransfer as the files were indeed too big for my email service. I referenced this thread so I hope it will be possible for you guys to determine why I sent the savegame files.

Edit: To be more specific: Japan has two subs south of Java. One is near to an American CV. It's this one where the bug happens (where you lose your strike) if you inch it next to the carrier. With the other sub (a bit further west), nothing of the sort happens if you inch it next to the enemy vessels south of it.

Thanks for the file, much appreciated

It looks like after the enemy contact is initiated, the Carrier attacks the sub which explains why the sub loses its strike as combat has ensued. The other sub that inches forward has an enemy contact, but the Cruiser does not attack the sub in this case, which explains why the sub still has its strike available and has the option to attack or not.

Hope this helps,
Hubert

Thanks for the reply, Hubert. Is it supposed to be like this? I mean, if the carrier attacks the sub when it moves beside it, this does not seem to elicit the usual distinct audio-visual attack-animation and sound (at least not for me) - for me, there seems to be only the "contact!" cue (but I'll check again using the turn if the two situations differ audio-visually).

It could be that it is missing the correct sound effects (which would be an issue for me to fix), but the targeting of the Sub by the Carrier was definitely shown.

Seems that in cleaning up my savegames recently I have deleted these turns, but maybe it really was a sound effect missing. I only posted this thread after I was sure I could reliably reproduce the result (i.e. my sub losing its strike opportunity) and in these repeated trials SOMETHING must have prevented me from noticing that the carrier actually attacked the sub when I moved right next to it. Apart from my sub losing its strike, the carrier's attack also seemed to never result in damage to either the sub or the carrier.
