I told CrackSabbath it was a cunning plan to get his defenders to burn through their supply stockpile, and I hope that he is now low on supply after firing so many AA shells at my unarmoured balsa wood Vals...

The Java Sea and South China Sea are packed with allied subs, but I have to keep pushing in this area.
There are now allied subs off most large ports in the Home Islands, but I am starting to get some of the IJN subs into position near the obvious allied convoy detinations in my 4th Fleet and SEAF areas.

The lull at Luzon is about to end with an IJA Division at each of Iba, Clark Field and Manila and another about to move into Clark.
The Singapore crossing is also close with 5th Div at Johore Bahru, 4th and 56th Divs moving there from Mersing.
Forces for the Palembang invasion are forming up at Cam Ranh Bay and will start reloading on amphib task forces tomorrow.

USS Marblehead was spotted at Port Moresby so all USN and RAN major fleet units may have left the DEI for the Coral Sea.
Mindanao is being cleared quickly with Nells based at Cagayan spotting no enemy ships along the Borneo coast.
Once Mindanao is clear, SNLFs will push quickly into the Celebes and Dutch Borneo.

The plan for KB over the next few weeks is for it to cover the Palembang landing then move to supoprt the Celebes/Borneo operations.

I don’t have enough ships or float planes but here’s what I’m trying to do to counter allied subs:

I’m using all SC in ASW Divs. The SC Ch boats are typically in groups of three and are either already hunting or are moving to the area. The smaller CHa boats are on ASW patrols in home waters.
I’ve just had a few AG Daigen conversions finish with many more coming, so they will move to forward bases like Miri and Singkawang to rearm SC and let me base SC divs in bases forward of CRB.

Im getting lots of contacts with allied subs from both planes and ships, but the main issue is that the experience levels of everything is so low they are very low % chance of getting a hit.

I’m using all DD that have ASW capability as CV/BB/CA/CL escorts and a few of the older DD classes as large TK/AO escorts. Some DD classes don’t have depth charges yet. The 0 ASW ships will take their ASW upgrades as soon as they are available. I have no spare DDs for dedicated ASW groups. Details of how I plan to use the DDs follow:

- DMS and APDs: old CL escorts in SNLF roles, ie: CL Katori class (1 already sunk) and the unique CL Yubari and CL Oyodo as they were not historically used as part of the main Battle Force.
- DDs Momo (2), Momi (8) and Wakatake (7) to Escort Force, mainly to protect the crucial TK convoys.
- DD Minekaze (13): CL escorts. As the IJN CLs are old and vulnerable on their own, I will mainly use them in SNLF fast transport roles and secondary role as surface combat task forces, generally in support of more powerful BB and CA task forces.
- DD Kamikaze (9): CVE escorts. I will also use the CVEs in support of SNLF operations.
- DD Mutsuki (12): CL escorts. Zero ASW capability until 2/42, so they will be used until then mixed in 2:2 with the DD Minekaze to escort my 6 x CL Fast Transport / Surface Combat task forces.
- DD Fubuki I/II/III (9/10/4): CA escorts, currently in three separate CA task forces with the Fubuki II and III split into 5/5/4 DDs. The Fubuki I are mixed in with the others to add their surface combat capability until they get depth charges.
- DD Hatsuharu (6): CVL escorts - all as one Div
- DD Shiratsuyu (10): CV escorts - currently all together with KB
- DD Asashio (10): BB Fuso and BB Ise class escorts - currently in two separate BB task forces
- DD Kagero (18 - 1 sunk already): CA escorts - currently in four separate CA task forces with 5/4/4/4 DDs each.
- DD Yugumo (2 +24 building): BB Nagato and BB Yamato class escorts
- DD Akitsuki (16 building): will join KB as additional CV escorts
- DDs Mutsu and Tachibana classes are less capable so may form DD only combat task forces, replace losses in Battle Force DDs, join the ASW Force or replace PBs on Convoy Escort duty. I am planning to build them all even though I don't want the war to continue long enough to need them!

The few E that start with depth charges are helping reorganise the TKs into their convoys, but I could use them as one or two ASW groups for the next few weeks until Palembang and Singapore are captured. I’ll do that and cross my fingers I don’t lose any!

I’m using PB to escort all other merchant convoys. Some conversions are close to giving me more PB. The PB I just lost to a Dutch sub was a big Ansyu, and at 10 points a pop I can’t afford to lose too many of them... they are worth more points than the USN DDs my subs have been hitting.

Capturing Java will be a big help as that will force the Dutch subs to base somewhere further away like Darwin, Perth or Colombo.

Here's a picture showing a bit more detail.

I/81st Naval Guard Unit – reinforcements required. This unit is on its way to SEAF so I will just reload it and use it to take a few dot hexes on the way, before recombining it into the 81st NGU so it is of more use in combat. I assumed incorrectly that Jesselton was unoccupied.
Defending units:
108th RN Base Force
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Changsha (82,52)
Allied Bombardment attack – No effect, not even on IJA fatigue or disruption. I hope they keep it up to keep burning supply.
Attacking force 56271 troops, 310 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1749
Defending force 50938 troops, 518 guns, 102 vehicles, Assault Value = 1665
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 89,47 (near Kweiteh)
Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 4100 troops, 42 guns, 16 vehicles, Assault Value = 234 – the 32nd/C Division will arrive tomorrow and I will reform the 32nd Division.
Defending force 5203 troops, 51 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 135 – movement is showing to withdraw to the west so I will keep trying deliberate attacks.

Allied ground losses:

OPERATIONAL REPORT FOR 25 DEC 41
Feni Islands is occupied by the Japanese
No additional repairs possible on SS I-171 using currently assigned resources at Kwajalein Island – this sub will move to the ARD at Truk to complete repairs. I’ve always wondered what the point of that ARD was, but this is the second IJN sub to need it so I’ve already answered my own question on that one twice now in two weeks of game time.
3 x H6K2-L Mavis transporting 13th JNAF AF Unit to Rabaul – I’m being cautious here as this was the site of the RAN victory and the USN is lurking near Port Moresby. I have just moved 6 x Jakes to Rabaul so they will start fumbling around in the darkness tomorrow to see if something jumps out and bites them.
CS Convoy TF 120 begins loading Resources at Fusan for delivery to Shimonoseki
Japanese forces CAPTURE Pucheng !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Iba !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Georgetown !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Dadjangas !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Cotabato !!!

Natori-1 converting to E13A1 Jake
Yura-1 converting to E13A1 Jake
Maya-2 on CS Chiyoda converting to size 24 from 2
Chokai-2 on CS Chitose converting to size 24 from 2

Assaulting units:
9th Ind.Mixed Brigade – this unit has just arrived from the SW. Two Divisions still moving in from the N and NE so I will coordinate their arrival so that they both shock attack across the river at the same time as the current troops in hex launch a deliberate attack. That will be about a week from now, so I will put in a probing deliberate attack before then to try and wear the defenders down a bit.
1st Division
Defending units:
35th Chinese Corps
83rd Chinese Corps
3rd Prov Chinese Corps
13th Group Army
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Clark Field (79,76)
Japanese Bombardment attack – to see exactly what units are defending. I have the 38th and 48th Divisions only a few days out so I will wait until they arrive before launching a deliberate attack. This is jungle rough terrain so will give a big bonus to the defenders.

14th Army
47th Field AA Battalion
1st Medium Field Artillery Regiment
48th Field AA Battalion
Defending units:
26th PS Cavalry Regiment
194th Tank Battalion – the two US tank battalions are the most dangerous units here at the moment.
192nd Tank Battalion
21st PA Infantry Division
14th PS Engineer Regiment – I’ve kept up fairly regular bombing on Clark Field so defensive forts shouldn’t be more than 2. We’ll know in a few days.
Subic Bay Defenses
1st PA Constabulary Regiment
Clark Field USAAF Base Force
Far East USAAF
200th & 515th Coast AA Regiment
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Manila (79,77)
Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 21170 troops, 204 guns, 109 vehicles, Assault Value = 730
Defending force 21859 troops, 271 guns, 170 vehicles, Assault Value = 529 – the mouse pop up on the map shows 40-50k defenders, so if it is only 22k that is better than I was expecting. I will try a deliberate attack but ideally want to capture Clark Field before capturing Manila so that the Manila defenders can’t join the Bataan defenders.
Allied ground losses:
13 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 2 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 2 (2 destroyed, 0 disabled)

9th Ind.Hvy.Art. Battalion
8th Medium Field Artillery Regiment
40th Field AA Battalion
3rd Engineer Construction Battalion
Defending units:
USAFFE – Command HQ will add some bonuses to the defenders
South Luzon Force – Same with the Corps HQ
1st PA Infantry Division – 5 x PA Divisions, but one was trashed at Batangas

Defending force 51004 troops, 518 guns, 102 vehicles, Assault Value = 1671

OPERATIONAL REPORT FOR 26 DEC 41
Dumanquilas is occupied by the Japanese – that’s good, saving me from having to land a small unit to capture it.
SS I-154 detects surfaced submarine at 52, 84 but it immediately dives – nearly another sub on sub action.
Repairs completed on AG Nanka Maru at Maizuru, ship returned to service: +10 x AG ready this turn
Repairs completed on AMc Tsukikawa Maru at Nagasaki/Sasebo, ship returned to service: +13 x AMc ready this turn
Repairs completed on CA Atago at Saigon, ship returned to service – all damaged repaired from the battle vs CA Houston a few weeks ago.
CS Convoy TF 95 begins loading Resources at Hakodate for delivery to Ominato
3 x H6K2-L Mavis transporting 13th JNAF AF Unit to Rabaul
CS Convoy TF 13 begins loading Oil at Shikuka for delivery to Wakkanai
CS Convoy TF 42 begins loading Fuel at Ominato for delivery to Hakodate
Lingayen expands airfield to size 3 – this will stop at AF3.
Chita expands airfield to size 4 – the Soviets are building their air bases. I will ask the Foreign Minister to send a message to the Allies that is a waste of time as the war won’t last that long!
Voroshilov expands airfield to size 5 – another Soviet airfield building.
Hiei-1 converting to E13A1 Jake
15th Tank Regiment - some devices have been upgraded at Chengchow. This Tank Regt only has 28 tanks, so I will use it for flank protection / screening missions rather than in major assault stacks.
36th Division - some devices have been upgraded at Paotow. Armoured cars to T97 Tankette.
5th Armored Car Co - some devices have been upgraded at Taiyuan. Armoured cars to Type 97 Tankette.
Haguro-2 on CS Chitose converting to size 24 from 2
xAKL Tatung is reported to have been sunk near Singapore on Dec 26, 1941
77th Sentai Det A arrives at Chiang Mai
77th Sentai Det B arrives at Chiang Mai
I/84th Naval Guard Unit arrives at Saipan – this unit is my planned Port Moresby naval guard. It will stay at Saipan until the other two sub-units arrive then reform as a full NGU. It looks like the allies are already reinforcing Port Moresby so by setting this unit to plan for Port Morseby I hope allied SigInt see that and keep a garrison there to defend against it. When I move on Port Moresby it will be with 2+ IJA Divisions plus support, but only after I get some more recon about what is defending the place.

Here's a snapshot of the situation on Malaya from 25 Dec 41:

China Theatre, Enemy Situation and Friendly Ops Plan:
A: 3 enemy units, 7500 troops. Previously defeated and pushed back from Paotow. Mongolia Garrison Army in pursuit
B: 4 enemy units, 35k troops. Mountain terrain, 3 x Divisions + 1 x IMB to push this force back towards Yenan.
C: 28 enemy units, 150-180k troops spread over four stacks. Tsiaotso is the largest stack that will be cut off once Loyang falls apart from withdrawing on the slow road to Sian. 1st Army needs to clear B then move to support C. Loyang should fall within 48 hours. 12th Army will be left to clear and garrison C. 20th Army will move SW immediately to help clear D.
D: 13 units, 110k troops. The Chinese have made no attempt to attack Sinyang yet. The 11th Army defenders at Sinyang should hold until 20th Army can link up from the north.
E: 10 enemy units, 100k+ troops. The Chinese are withdrawing to Patung and potentially further. One 11th Army Div with support is defending Ichang and pursued along the road one hex to the NW. This Div will not pursue further as it would leave Ichang exposed from the SW. An RGC unit will swap with the IJA Div and push to the Mountain hex East of Patung to set up an observation post and see what they can see from there.
F: 12 enemy units, 130k troops defending Changsha. 3 more units spotted at Siangtan. IJA deliberate attacks will start shortly to try and reduce forts. I will also restart aerial bombardments to assist. The 11th Army Division from D will move here once relieved by 20th Army.
G: 10 enemy units, 85k troops at Wenchow plus 6 units, 40k troops at Chuhsien. Deliberate attacks will start at Wenchow shortly. I don’t want to cut off and destroy these Chinese units so am deliberately leaving them a withdrawal route.
H: Not many Chinese units spotted down here as my air recon assets are currently focussed towards F and G. Kukong has 5 units, 24k troops. Pakhoi has 3 units, 12k troops and PT or MTB protecting the harbour. From previous days recon I know that Nanning has about 5 units, about 20k troops. 23rd Army is still under strength but garrison forces are moving to the China coast so that the 51st Division can concentrate and transition to offensive ops, Kukong the likely first target. Once G is cleared, 19th and 20th Divs while transfer to 23rd Army which will allow a move on the Nanning-Liuchow-Kweilin area.

Chinese Reserves.
My Intelligence Staff report that the Chinese started the war with a large reserve at Chungking, but they can’t tell me where they are or what they are doing now…
Those reserves could stay put to build up strength and train, move to reinforce Burma, move south to reinforce vic F or H, or move east to reinforce the Sian area.
I have no idea which of the above is currently happening, so I need to get more air recon eyes looking past the front line in China and into the bases in depth.
The Chinese Reserves can’t move quickly enough to help defend A,B,C or D; but they could get to F or H fairly quickly.
A counter attack near E is a slim possibility, but if I can capture and hold the Mountain hex that will be my canary in central China.

Well, if you have an HR requiring PP for crossing borders, most CHI units are Permamently Restricted, so they can't go into Burma. I think there are only 3 or 4 div equivalents that can change HQ to leave CHI.

IF you don't have that in place … whoa … most allied players would do a major exodus into India and that creates a nightmare for the IJ. Ergo the common HR ...

The house rules are, there are no house rules!

The implications are that I can (have) moved lots of troops that were relaxing in Manchukuo to active service in China, so advantage Japan early war.
The flip side is that Chinese troops can move freely to Burma to help delay the Japanese there.
They can also move freely to India, where if left alone with sufficient supply and time they can train up to become 700+ AV Corps, quite a few with modern US equipment.

If I give the allies time to train up the British Indian Army, they too can march freely all the way to places like Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Fusan...

The result, I need to try and win the war by Jan 1944 at the latest.

Even though I haven’t done much by way of moving into Burma yet, it is going to be a crucial campaign.
If/when I can capture Burma, I don’t think I can afford to try and sit and hold it without pushing into India, but that may depend on the points situation when I get that far.

Fighters with cannons on strafing will help take care of those PT boats. At night, make sure that there is good visibility so you don't start the engagement at 2,000 yards.

You can drop those SSX at sea and give them patrol orders. They can also detect minefields at ports that you know will have them so that your big subs won't detect the minefields. But I think that four points is too much for them, maybe 1 or 2 points.

To slow Chinese units moving to Burma and thence to India, use paratroopers to capture the bases along the Chinese-Burma Theatre and fly in air support to bomb the Chinese units to slow them down and use supplies. This should also cut off the Burma Road for supplies.

Invade Pegu to cut off Moulmein and avoid the mines at Rangoon, plus you can have BBs there unlike Rangoon.

Cheers Joe
I'll try to find somewhere to let the Zeros strafe. It will need to be away from allied AA though.
SSX on defensive patrols in base hexes might be worthwhile. I don't want to use any more of them where they don't have a withdrawal route.
For Burma, Pegu currently has less allied troops than Rangoon and Moulmein so I will definitely look at landing a Div+ there. The 2x orphan Regts from 55th Div will move by ship past Singapore as soon as it is captured and the mines are cleared. They will probably land at Tavoy and walk to Moulmein.
I need to move a few more recon air groups to Chiang Mai to get some eyes on the Burma/China border. I can spare them from Malaya now so will move some next turn.

SUMMARY FOR 28 DEC 41
CrackSabbath lives on W coast USA, while I am on E coast of Aus. His timezone is -18 hours of mine, so quite often one of us sends the game file to the other and the other is able to take actions in game immediately. I can only open the game for up to a few hours maximum each evening, but that seems to be working quite well as I get the rest of the day to think about my next move.
The latest game file was in my inbox when I work up this morning. That created one of life’s big dilemmas: make myself a coffee before running the turn and risk waking up wife and/or offspring in the process, or try and watch the replay and compute what is going on before having a coffee?
I went for option one, ran the turn and saved the file. Being un-caffeinated, I sent the save game file back instead of the combat replay which was of no use. I realised just as I clicked send so followed up with an explanation and the 001 file.

Here is the latest summary of the results. So far we are getting through the turns a lot quicker than I thought possible at nearly one/day, and I’m really enjoying the uncertainty that comes with playing against a human.

Aircraft Attacking:
5 x Ki-43-Ic Oscar sweeping at 15000 feet
CAP engaged:

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 32
Allied aircraft
H81-A3 x 4
No Japanese losses
Allied aircraft losses
H81-A3: 1 destroyed.
Looking at the Int screen after the turn, the final score looks like 7:3 in favour of the IJAAF with a few H81 kills credited to my pilots later in the day. The factories built 4 new Oscars and this group lost 3 shot down, so at least I didn’t go backwards in Oscars today. I will try to rotate these Oscars between sweep / CAP for the next week or so to stay unpredictable here and keep fatigue low / morale high. I will also hold off upgrading my next Nate group to Oscars until I have a small stockpile of Oscars to provide combat loss replacements in this active group. It feels good to finally be doing something offensive in Burma.
Aircraft Attacking:
18 x Ki-43-Ic Oscar sweeping at 15000 feet – I picked this altitude as it is the highest altitude that is still in the best manoeuvre band for Oscars. I’ve read a few threads on sweep altitudes etc but am no expert on it. I will play around with it now that I can see the patrol altitude of the H81s, but I don't expect their patrol altitude to stay constant either.
9 x Ki-43-Ic Oscar sweeping at 15000 feet
2 x Ki-43-Ic Oscar sweeping at 15000 feet
CAP engaged:
AVG/1st Sqn with H81-A3 (0 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 15000 , scrambling fighters between 16140 and 19140.

Assaulting units:
33rd Division – it was a 50:50 call while they were at sea passing CRB, but I’m glad I sent 33rd Div to Malaya and not directly to Burma. With their help, Malaya should be clear within the next week, which will let 33rd Div rail to Thailand/Burma, and free up 18th Div and IG Div for other things. 18th Div will either reinforce Palembang, or if it falls quickly move to clear northern Sumatra. The current plan is to keep the IG Div as a theatre reserve / ready reaction force based at Singapore. The main allied moves that I am detecting are into Burma so I may commit the IG Div there in the near future. I am not comfortable at the moment with all Southern Army Divisions committed, as I have no reserve to react to unexpected allied moves. I want to form a reserve based around 1 x Division, but while I have the allies on the back foot now might be too soon. I’ll ponder this some more before committing the IG Div anywhere.

Fusan expands port to size 7 – the resources flowing from CMK to Japan will speed up again as this port can now load larger convoys faster. Fusan will expand to P8 then I plan to buy out a lot (all?) construction engineers and move them to build up ports in Hokkaido, Sakhalin and Ominato.
Kaoping expands airfield to size 1 – that will do. The main reason I did this was so I can see the base flag on the screen instead of a dot!
Uttaradit expands airfield to size 2 – another air base that can be used to sweep Rangoon, on the Bangkok-Chiang Mai railway.
Delhi expands airfield to size 5 – Perhaps this is the new home of the Chinese Air Force?!

I would not put the SSX in a base hex which has enemy units at the base since they will try to visit the port. I would put them in open ocean. They will not react but I have had enemy convoys run over them and they have torpedoed ships. They do need to have a patrol set for just that hex, with no patrol set they will try to return to base and only make it two hexes before they have set put up a loin cloth as a sail.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Port Moresby at 97,132
Japanese Ships
SS I-123 – my starting pool of sub laid mines is now empty so I will use this boat as an attack sub until there are more mines to lay. I get something like two new mines of this type per day, so my three remaining sub minelayers can drop one load about once a month between them. I will add this to my list of things to do on the 1st of each month and pick a target for one of them then.
Allied Ships
PT-38
PT-42
PT-36
SS I-123 cannot acquire firing solution on enemy PT
Sub escapes detection
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Manila , at 79,77
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 13 – I will move these Zeroes forward and leave CAP over Luzon to IJAAF fighters, which will remain Nates for some time yet.
G3M2 Nell x 23 – I will also move these Nells to Naval Search / Naval Attack duty now. I will find some IJAAF bombers (5th Air Div) to replace them with, but most 5th Air Div bombers are currently busy hitting bases from Luzon to Wenchow in China. I need to prioritise Clark Field and Manila over other targets.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Clark Field , at 79,76
Japanese aircraft
Ki-21-IIa Sally x 17
Ki-48-Ib Lily x 10
Runway hits 8 – Not bad, I need to keep the airfield damaged to avoid forts being rebuilt. I might try a raid at slightly lower altitude next to see if I get more hits, but that could just bring more allied flak into play. If I get time this evening I will check the database for allied AA gun maximum ranges, but I will also just do a bit of trial and error.
Aircraft Attacking:
10 x Ki-48-Ib Lily bombing from 20000 feet *
Airfield Attack: 2 x 100 kg GP Bomb
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on 48th Chinese Corps, at 88,47 , near Kweiteh – hitting some Chinese troops in the open as they withdraw.
Japanese aircraft
Ki-30 Ann x 11
Allied ground losses:
37 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 2 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Kukong , at 79,57
Japanese aircraft
Ki-27b Nate x 6
Ki-51 Sonia x 19
Airbase hits 1
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 7
Aircraft Attacking:
19 x Ki-51 Sonia bombing from 10000 feet – next to no flak at 10k feet gets some decent hits. 51st Division is moving in bits and pieces towards Kukong.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Kukong , at 79,57
Japanese aircraft
Ki-36 Ida x 21
Airbase hits 2
Runway hits 11
Aircraft Attacking:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Singapore , at 50,84
Japanese aircraft
Ki-21-IIa Sally x 56
Ki-48-Ib Lily x 9
Airbase hits 1
Runway hits 3
Aircraft Attacking:
27 x Ki-21-IIa Sally bombing from 23000 feet – I’ll drop these to 20k feet to start and maybe lower, but I already know that Singapore has oodles of AA guns.
Airfield Attack: 4 x 250 kg GP Bomb
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Pakhoi , at 72,58
Japanese aircraft
Ki-51 Sonia x 12
No Japanese losses
Allied Ships – I’ve had these ships spotted for about a week, but was concerned that it might be a trap. After some recon it didn’t look like there was any CAP, so I went for it.
xAK Haraldsvang, Bomb hits 1, on fire
xAKL Yat Shing, Bomb hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage
xAKL Joan Moller, Bomb hits 1, on fire
MTB 10, Bomb hits 1, and is sunk
MTB 9, Bomb hits 1, and is sunk
xAKL Halldor, Bomb hits 1, heavy fires
Aircraft Attacking:
12 x Ki-51 Sonia bombing from 5000 feet
Port Attack: 4 x 50 kg GP Bomb – 50kg bombs are still quite effective. It only take 1 to sink an MTB. 1 of them = heavy fires on merchants, 2+ of them equals heavy damage on an xAKL, 3+ of them equals heavy damage on an xAK.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chumphon expands airfield to size 2 – this is the current location of the IJNAF 21st Air Flotilla HQ, with maritime patrols set to avoid allied CAP at Rangoon. I picked this base as it is one hex from Victoria Point so can cover the entrance to the Malacca Strait, is on the railway line to help keep it supplied, and is protected from allied interference as it is on the east coast of the peninsular.

Yes, but OTOH, everything in China (industry, resources, oil) falls into the hands of Japan early.

Not only that, you have some ID that are fully air mobile. Over time you could fly one or two of them in, depending on how much supply you could then move up.

Another relatively quiet turn but that will change tomorrow!
The solid Chinese defence of Wenchow was not unexpected.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 31, 41

TF 322 encounters mine field at Port Moresby (98,130) – this suggests to me that CrackSabbath is the sort of player who attends to details within the game.
Allied Ships

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack near Muntok at 52,90 – there are about 10 allied subs spotted in the triangle between Singapore, Singkawang and Palembang. I am trying to keep their heads down with about 6 x SC Divisions, KB bombers are flying high % of NS and ASW, plus Nells on NS/ASW flying from Singkawang.

Ground combat at Wenchow (89,58) – Wenchow takes out the best fireworks display for New Years Eve 1942.
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 54536 troops, 537 guns, 212 vehicles, Assault Value = 2142
Defending force 43902 troops, 243 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1564
Japanese adjusted assault: 1059
Allied adjusted defense: 1627
Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 2)
Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), preparation(-), experience(-)
Attacker:
Japanese ground losses:
7211 casualties reported
Squads: 59 destroyed, 525 disabled – 19th Division suffered the most casualties, losing about 50% infantry squads disrupted. 19th Division will move to Reserve and the other forces will bombard for a few days. HQ 13th Army is moving to this hex from two hexes north, plus HQ China Expeditionary Army. I won’t launch another deliberate attack until GEN Hata can personally reorganise the assault force and coordinate their attacks. Once those 2 x HQ units arrive on the scene that should bump my adjusted AV to at least 1:1. They are maybe 4-5 days march away.

45th Ind.AA Gun Co
6th RGC Division
15th RGC Temp. Division
21st RGC Temp. Division
26th RGC Temp. Division
5th RGC Route Brigade

Defending units: 3 x big Corps and 3 x medium sized Corps. One of the mediums became combat ineffective after this attack and one of the large Corps was significantly reduced. I knew this would be a grind to capture Wenchow once he moved so much force forward. I need to keep wearing the defenders down without losing too many destroyed squads myself. I am going to leave one escape route for this Chinese force to the west, off the road so that they aren’t pushed back to join the Chushien defenders. This will probably be a a slow grind for a few weeks.
86th Chinese Corps
50th Chinese Corps
49th Chinese Corps
70th Chinese Corps
21st Chinese Corps
100th Chinese Corps

Ground combat at Clark Field (79,76)
Japanese Bombardment attack – fatigue is <10 but disruption is still in the 20s for most units. I am going to launch another deliberate attack tomorrow anyway to coordinate with the Manila attack, to try and reduce forts again.
Attacking force 1995 troops, 140 guns, 127 vehicles, Assault Value = 1359
Defending force 11952 troops, 218 guns, 434 vehicles, Assault Value = 389

Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 3 (1 destroyed, 2 disabled)
Vehicles lost 6 (6 destroyed, 0 disabled) – this looked like a few tanks were hit during the replay.

AMc Wa 19 detects Allied Aircraft at 48,91 near Palembang – I have 2 x AMc in separate task forces at Palembang now. No sign of enemy minefields so the assault force will continue. The first wave is half a turn away so should start to unload, with follow on forces also in bound. I plan to get land based Zeroes in the air over Palembang immediately as I’m expecting B-17s to go after the oil fields. I have a few AA Regts in the follow up force so plan to make the B-17s pay a price for visiting.

The spare Bn from the 33rd Regt refuse to board transport Theresas at Canton for the second day running, so I have ordered them to walk to Wuchow. Not sure what the problem is and it isn’t important enough for me to investigate. If they don’t want to get on the plane they can walk!

Not only that, you have some ID that are fully air mobile. Over time you could fly one or two of them in, depending on how much supply you could then move up.

Looks like I cut it from the summary report, but some Sally “recon” ground bombing shows there is already a Chinese Div at Lashio. I need more recon eyes into Burma but CrackSabbath may have already covered the vacant bases.

EDIT: Here it is. This Chinese "Division" is probably closer to a Bn in combat power, but dropping paras on it in Jungle Rough terrain sounds like something CAPT Risky would do.

I didn't get much of a chance to review the game before work this morning, so was wondering all day HTF so many IJA squads were disabled at Wenchow. Apart from the 50% losses to 19th Division, who I think had just arrived in hex so probably had no field forts, at first glance everyone else looked to be in pretty good shape. Fast forward to Friday evening and I get a chance to take a closer look...

Following orders, COL Takeda threw the 2nd Independent Mixed Regiment at the city walls.

One Bn destroyed outright, two Bns wounded. Not even a single infantry section can be mustered at 2IMR roll call that evening.
Lesson learnt from this (again, because I already knew this!) is to avoid including units that lack combat engineers in assaults on fortified objectives. I can't fault the courage of these 1s and 0s, they just didn't have any sappers to follow.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Submarine attack near Adak Island at 162,53
Japanese Ships – I have an IJN sub division spread outside USN bases from the Aluetians to the Canadian West Coast. CrackSabbath has already told me via email that he hates the IJN subs. I am keen to keep them visible in all theatres so that he has to dedicate ASW assets in rear areas and try to avoid him concentrating them all in forward areas.

2 x Ki-43-Ic Oscar sweeping at 15000 feet.
No contact with allied fighters over Moulmein, suggesting that allied CAP over Rangoon is set to range 0 or 1. I will check fatigue levels and probably try another sweep of Rangoon, or maybe a “recon” sweep of Magwe to try and see if the rest of the AVG are in central Burma.

CAP engaged:
64th Sentai with Ki-43-Ib Oscar (5 airborne, 11 on standby, 0 scrambling)
5 plane(s) intercepting now.
Group patrol altitude is 10000 – I had them flying relatively low CAP compared to the raid altitude. I might put a high and low CAP up and see what happens.
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 7 minutes

You've got a lot of troops that will be ground down in Wenchow. While you're fighting and losing squads to disablements there he's digging into x3 territory.

I'd advise pulling out and moving to the centre, leaving Wenchow for the Chinese and keeping it disabled as an airbase. There's nothing he can really use it for anyway.

An easy China is dependent on quick movement, outrunning the Chinese hordes, and suppressing any Allied attempts to jump your bombing runs. As Japan the timing is everything. So to lose this 4 ID plus stack of troops for the next few months isn't going to help you at all.

Even though England gave the Wallabies a rugby lesson, Palembang was captured with no damage to industry!
The Singapore assault force have also established a bridgehead, but have some impressively high disruption and fatigue so they won't launch another deliberate attack until they are both reduced.

I will keep recon and aerial bombardment on them with small garrisons in the bases that need them on Mindanao to protect against this allied force taking any offensive action. I will clear them later, with troops yet to be identified.

dropping paras on it in Jungle Rough terrain sounds like something CAPT Risky would do.

No guts, no glory.

If he is weak enough and you can airlift upon taking a base, the payoff maybe worth the small risk.

Your unit is in 'move' mode. Not good for combat.

BTW, that unit is now prime for 'buying out' (will load on ships). I find such units to be useful in defense of certain island.
