I have read the manual but not found much on the way morale is determined. What I would particularly like to know is how it relates (if at all) to unit cohesion. If a platoon's squads are split up all over the map does their morale suffer as opposed to a plt whose squads are fighting in close proximity to oneanother?

No morale is not modeled based on unit proximity...an interesting thought :-) There are set "ranges" of morale values based on what country you have. The "Rout/Rally" preference lets you adjust that if you think it too high/low. The command and conrol rules force you to keep units close together or risk losing conrol of them. Success with them on comes from conceptualizing your plan of attack as platoon movements to intermediate objectives. I will check if isloated units still gain suppression over time. I think we left that in form SP3... [This message has been edited by Paul Vebber (edited 05-15-2000).]

The two key elements (besides the influence of the formation leader) that affect a unit's performance are morale and experience. Morale is how enthused the unit is about the situation. Experience is how well he can attack and defend. Set tables are in the game that issue morale numbers to units based on their historical performance. As always, such a system is not always accurate. Anyone can show that not all the units of a particular country were fearful and easily intimidated. A good scenario designer takes that into account and modifies morale and experience based on the units actual performance in the historical conflict. That is another reason I prefer human designed scenarios rather than computer generated ones (if they are done right!).
