Football is stupid. Or rather, Swedish football is stupid.

A majority of the top league teams play their matches on artificial, plastic, turf. The winner is likely to be a team who has only played 6 matches on grass this season. One of the tree teams that can still win the title is a plastic pitch specialists who can not win on grass. Bah.

(6 out of 16 top league teams play on grass)
warspite1

Mmmmmm..... I can understand why Sweden would want plastic pitches but....

I don't think you guess the main reason.

In many parts they claim it is because of the weather. But that is usually not the truth. The truth is that Swedish teams are poor and do not have their own pitch. The district, or municipality, owns the pitch and they want the pitch to be used for more than a few football matches. And plastic can be used a lot without any extra expense. In Stockholm, for example, the two current top teams, plays on the same arena owned by the city and it has a plastic pitch. But previously both teams had their own arena and both had grass. Keeping a grass pitch has become easier, and cheaper, and yet we get fewer grass pitches every year.

You are correct. I didn't guess the main reason.... That's all a bit of a shame really

Will be interesting to see how the play-off will turn out. Scotland-Norway might be exciting (if they advance), and if team 3 or 4 can do something about it. And Group D might be fun as well. I doubt that any of those 4 teams has ever been this close to entering the Euros. And I suppose that the British are glad that Northern Ireland will not be competing for the same spot as Scotland.

I will pass judgement until I see the full line up but always nice to see new faces - Congrats to Finland!!

Wasn't it Garfield who asked "Does Pooky need you?" Well Finland do

Thank you.

Were never any doubt that England would make it.

Interesting match for Ireland tomorrow.

You said it. Congratulations to Finland. Well deserved.

And speaking of new faces. One of the four teams in group D will be in the Euros.

For clarification.

One team from each of the four groups (A,B,C,D) will advance to the Euros. They meet in a 'standard' two matches play-off. First team 1 play against team 4, and 2 vs 3. And then the two winners fight it out who will advance to the Euro.

Now it is clear that Norway will encounter Serbia in the first play-off round. I suspect it will be a close fought encounter.

Well, well, well..... in some ways I never saw that coming (what he achieved on the budget he had, Champions League football) - but then we are in a relegation battle, at least 4 first team players are looking to leave for nothing, there is not the slightest sign of any improvement and he appears to have run out of ideas and never a plan B.

I don't think Mourinho would be attracted to Spurs unless he convinces Levy he's changed his MO and is prepared to work with kids - we just don't have any money....

I'm not one for sacking willy nilly but seriously, look at how badly we have been playing for 2 seasons now - and we are actually getting worse, with players disaffected and downing tools.

I agree about the overall form since the start of 2019. The problem was some of the end of last season could be linked to 'issues', no recruitment. Wembley, injuries so sort of overlooked. This season has been really awful.

But I'd have sacked 4 players before getting rid of Poch. And who will we get who can so seriously outperform our level of relative financial investment?

edit: seems that Levy wants Mourinho. That is going to be as bad as when he appointed George Grahem - first set of bad results and it'll explode as there will be no good will towards the manager

Did Pochettino deserve the sack....

The ESPN FC view...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPqObrpdrF0&t=0s

My view? Spurs are in meltdown. Too many players just don't want to be there. And now, Levy has just taken away one the reasons they haven't already gone.

Mourhinho? Would Levy even pay his wages?

Best wishes,
Steve

Then again, as an outsider, I'd look at Levy rather than Poch as the culprit of not moving those out who wanted out, and bringing fresh players in. Poch sacked, Vertonghen, Erikson, Aireweireld (sp?), Rose out next summer. Quite a rebuild ahead. While Mourinho is always the short cut to success. I mean he does bring that, but usually (at least how I've seen it happen) by buying more experienced but at the same time older players, who do not necessarily have that many seasons in them anymore.

At least life will not be dull at Spurs for a while.

Does this signal a change in the Tottenham boardroom. New stadium is up and running. Team needs refreshing. Time to spend a bit of money?

Best wishes,
Steve

Just watched Jose's first press conference. Good value as always (when he's not got a sulk on). Time will tell as to how much he's changed/learned and how much he will stick with what he's saying about the current squad and youth players.

But one thing that always comes across with Jose; humble schmumble, its all about him, its always about him and why? Because he has a need to win that burns so intensely. Nothing wrong with that.

But will he continue to achieve as he's always done and win trophies, or is this one step too far? Tottenham being Tottenham I can just picture the headlines in 2-3 years when Spurs become the first team he didn't win a trophy with - its almost written in the stars that this is the club that breaks Jose's incredible trophy laden record.

But what will be will be, fact is, as sad as I am to see Mauricio go, as much as I love the guy and will always be grateful for what he did for us, fact was something had to change. We were in a relegation scrap - indeed as a mark of how bad things are, if we lose on Saturday, we may be in the bottom 3 come the end of the weekend.....

Supporting Spurs..... don't do it kids....

well I still recall a midweek trip to Mansfield in the 77/78 season, so whatever happens now it can't be that bad again? Not least, I suspect that Mansfield have no chance any chance of reaching the Championship.

edit: it may not have been midweek, heres the 'highlights':

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJ3dsONj6s8

its a hoot, Barry Daines setting new levels of ineptness and Glen Hoddle scoring a sublime freekick

Lolzer

I remember that season so well. We had just got relegated to the old League Division 2 - just as the warspite family moved home to original Arsenal country.....

The season started so well (although in line with tradition our first defeat was to ultimately relegated Hull City ) and an immediate return to the top flight seemed assured . We even beat Bristol Rovers 9-0 along the way . Then we went all Spursey...

After that draw at Mansfield (who were relegated) we sat at the top of the table with 7 games to go.....

....we promptly managed to lose 3 and draw 2 of those - and just scrapping 1-0 wins in the other two.

We ended up with a nervy last day match against Southampton. Brighton finished the season strongly and their last game was against relegated Blackpool. Assuming they won (which they did) we would need a point to be sure of promotion on goal difference. Final score 0-0.

Promotion? Never in doubt

The final draw for the play-off was done today. Here are the four groups.

I find it fun that all the teams from the British Isles are still in the race to enter the competition (or already entered). Albeit, at least one team, will not due to the groups. Butit will sure be fun to watch the two teams from the Ireland fight it out. That is if they make it that far.

Well Hungary, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Kosovo would do very nicely thanks.
