Blitzkrieg and Assault tables are mobile combat and a fixed defense. Blitzkrieg has lower casualties (for both sides) but higher chance of taking the hex and the attacker remaining organized. Assault has higher casualties, but a lower chance of taking the hex. If the terrain is bad, the defender always gets the chance to pick. If the terrain is good and the attacker has more armor than the defender, the attacker gets to pick. Usually the attacker prefers blitzkrieg and the defender assault, but not always. If the attacker is making a good attack against a hex that the defender doesn't care if he holds, the defender might pick blitzkrieg in order to save his units. The Chinese are particularly apt to do that, given their low production. The main disadvantage in such a situation is that the attacker is less likely to flip (that is, get disorganized), allowing attacks later in the turn. P.S. The game is blessed (?) with two CRTs. The 1d10 CRT was designed for the game without divisions, the 2d10 one with divisions. The latter has higher casualty rates, which to some extant makes up for people using divisions to absorb casualties. The defender always finds it amusing when the attacker finds the 14 on the 2d10 assault table. The attacker, not so much.
