March 28, 1943 On the 28th several naval units surge ahead and tackle Home Island bases on Kyushu for the first time!! Two cruiser led TFs hit Kagoshima and Kummamoto, while DDs ineffectively hit Kanoya. Sweeps and 4E bombardments finish the job during the day, and the Japanese suffer big losses to the air power. The 4Es also locate CA Mikuma and drop no less than 15 500lb bombs on her, leaving her on fire in Kagoshima. They also hit another precious DD with four bombs, likely putting her out of action for a good while. On the Korean Peninsula the capture of Genzen seals the fate of the IJA. No more reinforcements can come from Manchuria now, and tanks will surge down the Eastern coastline while other troops march on Keijo. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Mar 28, 1943 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TF 112 encounters mine field at Amami Oshima (98,64) Allied Ships DMS Lamberton 40 mines cleared -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TF 112 encounters mine field at Amami Oshima (98,64) Allied Ships DMS Lamberton, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TF 230 encounters mine field at Naha (95,66) Allied Ships YMS-99 YMS-94 52 mines cleared -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Night Time Surface Combat, near Kagoshima at 102,60, Range 2,000 Yards Japanese Ships E Kunashiri, Shell hits 7, and is sunk E W-8, Shell hits 20, and is sunk Allied Ships CL Trenton CL Nashville CL Cleveland CL Denver DD Meredith DD Gwin DD Grayson DD Gansevoort DD Gillespie DD Hobby Reduced visibility due to Thunderstorms with 50% moonlight Maximum visibility in Thunderstorms and 50% moonlight: 2,000 yards -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Night Time Surface Combat, near Kagoshima at 102,60, Range 2,000 Yards Japanese Ships E W-24, Shell hits 1 SC Ch 20, Shell hits 11, and is sunk AKE Taketoyo Maru, Shell hits 26, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk AKE Tazima Maru, Shell hits 59, and is sunk AMc Rumeo Maru, Shell hits 3 Allied Ships CL Trenton CL Nashville CL Cleveland CL Denver DD Meredith DD Gwin DD Grayson DD Gansevoort DD Gillespie DD Hobby, Shell hits 1 Reduced visibility due to Thunderstorms with 50% moonlight Maximum visibility in Thunderstorms and 50% moonlight: 2,000 yards -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Night Time Surface Combat, near Kagoshima at 102,60, Range 3,000 Yards Japanese Ships xAK Kinugawa Maru, Shell hits 17, heavy fires, heavy damage xAK Seia Maru, Shell hits 25, and is sunk PB Bokuyo Maru, Shell hits 4, and is sunk Allied Ships CL Trenton CL Nashville CL Cleveland CL Denver DD Meredith DD Gwin DD Grayson DD Gansevoort DD Gillespie DD Hobby Poor visibility due to Thunderstorms with 50% moonlight Maximum visibility in Thunderstorms and 50% moonlight: 2,000 yards -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Night Time Surface Combat, near Kagoshima at 102,60, Range 2,000 Yards Japanese Ships ACM Fumi Maru, Shell hits 1, and is sunk xAK Yamaoka Maru, Shell hits 19, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk AMc Takunan Maru #7, Shell hits 2, and is sunk Allied Ships CL Trenton CL Nashville CL Cleveland CL Denver DD Meredith DD Gwin DD Grayson DD Gansevoort DD Gillespie DD Hobby Reduced visibility due to Thunderstorms with 39% moonlight Maximum visibility in Thunderstorms and 39% moonlight: 2,000 yards -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Night Time Surface Combat, near Kagoshima at 102,60, Range 1,000 Yards Japanese Ships xAK Yamazuki Maru, Shell hits 41, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk PB Fukkai Maru, Shell hits 8, and is sunk SC Ch 28, Shell hits 21, and is sunk Allied Ships CL Trenton CL Nashville CL Cleveland CL Denver DD Meredith DD Gwin DD Grayson DD Gansevoort DD Gillespie DD Hobby Low visibility due to Thunderstorms with 39% moonlight Maximum visibility in Thunderstorms and 39% moonlight: 2,000 yards -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Night Naval bombardment of Kagoshima at 102,60 Japanese aircraft no flights Japanese aircraft losses A6M2 Zero: 35 damaged A6M2 Zero: 4 destroyed on ground J2M2 Jack: 22 damaged J2M2 Jack: 1 destroyed on ground A6M2-N Rufe: 6 damaged Ki-43-IIa Oscar: 21 damaged Ki-45 KAIa Nick: 12 damaged Ki-30 Ann: 4 damaged Ki-30 Ann: 2 destroyed on ground Ki-27b Nate: 16 damaged Ki-27b Nate: 1 destroyed on ground Allied Ships CL Denver CL Nashville CL Trenton Japanese ground losses: 438 casualties reported Squads: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled Non Combat: 6 destroyed, 63 disabled Engineers: 0 destroyed, 10 disabled Guns lost 8 (2 destroyed, 6 disabled) Airbase hits 15 Airbase supply hits 5 Runway hits 51 SOC-1 Seagull acting as spotter for CL Denver CL Denver firing at Kagoshima CL Nashville firing at Kagoshima CL Trenton firing at Kagoshima -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Night Naval bombardment of Kumamoto at 102,59 - Coastal Guns Fire Back!
