You probably only need -deepColor and -dd_sw as your shortcuts. The rest is just window dressing.

I decided to get back into this game after several years away. I bought and downloaded the game from Matrix. My game is extremely slow, takes several seconds to switch locations on the map or to call up units. I have tried the tricks on this thread to no improvement. I have to say it is extremely frustrating to spend $75 on a game that is basically unplayable without being an IT specialist to get it working

Yes, getting it to run properly can be frustrating. Fortunately there is an easy fix. Install the "Seabee" utility and it will solve those problems.

Clueless, you say?

I spend $75 on a game. That is a decent sum of money. I expect it be playable.

I download the game and it is just not playable. It is sluggish to the point of being pointless.

Why would Matrix, or any company for that matter, sell a product that doesn't work or make it's own download fix compatibility issues?

So I come to the forum and while everyone is helpful and friendly, the solutions don't work. I am asked to "write code" (for lack of a better description) to correct the problem. I'm sorry but I should not have to know what cpu my laptop is(?) has(?) uses (?) or color card or whatever to play a game. These are fixes that should be incorporated into the download.

I tried the SeeBee utility and again, I am not an IT specialist, so I dont know what options to pick.

I'm sorry but to me this purchase is a waste of money since I (a) can't play it and (b) can't fix the problem.

In all seriousness, if you aren't patient enough to spend a little time on getting the game to work correctly, this is definitely NOT the sort of game you'll enjoy. I had to play short scenarios for months before the mechanics of the game finally started to "click". Put in the time, and this is the sort of game that will pay you back with a decade or more of enjoyment. But it's not for everyone.

well, you see, this game is for me, evident by the fact that I played it solid for around 2 years several years ago (on a previous laptop). I played the Japanese all the way to September 46 as I recall. So I have no problem with the patience. I do have a problem with a game that doesn't work, despite repeated efforts at getting it to work.

I do have a problem with a game that doesn't work, despite repeated efforts at getting it to work.

We all started out as you have, with getting the game and thinking we can install it because we have done so with other programs without problems. But getting this game to run is like buying an old airplane that barely runs and having to take parts from other aircraft to try and make it hum. You can either do endless experimentation of your own or study the threads here in the Tech forum that refer to installation problems, display problems and slow running issues.

I went with the latter choice and read the threads at the time until I understood what they were talking about and then started doing what other players did to fix problems similar to mine. Then I experimented with a few switch changes and settings in Windows to get it to run best on my specific combination of PC, Video Card, and Windows version. When Win 10 was forced on me I had to study some more and change a lot of things in my switches but it was worth it to get it running well again.

Now there is the SeaBee program to walk you through the process but you should still read the threads to understand what the switches do so you can make choices that suit you. If, after you have done some research and tried a few things, you still have problem, take screenshots and post them here to get specific help. Good luck!

You need to make a shortcut of the exe and then right click it, go to Properties, go to the "Target" box where you should find your location for your exe already typed out. Add the switches in the box after this. For instance, mine looks like this:

"C:\Users\SK\Desktop\Allies Game\Reluctant Admiral\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -altFont -archive -deepColor -px1920 -py1080 -skipVideo -SingleCpuOrders -dd_sw -w

I used the line above and on my 34" screen it only takes up about 60% of the screen?

I appreciate everyone trying to help. I'm in the same boat as others here. I'm past 70. No IT experience and much fear of screwing things up. I played this game for several years on win7, enjoyed it enough to want to play a little more. I know I have the patience to play it. What I don't have is any idea what I have to do to make it run. I've read an tried to apply the fixes mentioned in this thread.

Here is what my target line looks like right now: "C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\autorun.exe"-altFont -skipVideo -archive -deepColor -dd_sw -px1600 -py900

Needless to say it won't run instead I get an error message that says "The name "C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\autorun.exe"-altFont -skipVideo -archive -deepColor -dd_sw -px1600 -py900 specified in the target box is not valid. Please make sure the path and the file name are correct.

I don't know what's wrong. Anyone see anything obvious?

You need to get rid of the auto.exe

Should look similar to mine:

"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -fd -altFont -cpu2 -multiaudio -px1920 -py1080 -deepColor -skipVideo

Also make sure you have updated your game at least to the official patch (1126a), or else none of the wide screen switches will work.

It is not as difficult as you fear. If you read the stuff already posted while making the changes on your computer it is all there. You are defeated because you decided to be defeated rather than learn something new. This is a recipe for failure in all things in life. I urge you to force yourself to do it - the feeling of accomplishment and empowerment is palpable when it all works.

Hey everyone! So I just downloaded it, and did some of the tips above, but the first turn takes the computer about an hour or so to get through. Is this normal?

OK, you are making progress. You posted your question twice - I answered in the other one.
I sense that you are nearly there in getting the game up to speed.

Funny how people seem to be dusting this off nowadays, as I was in the same boat. Tried it last night, and had the same issues....reading the help, I wasn't sure what to add, but the SeaBee program did fantastic. Up and running smoothly....thanks for the help there, and stay safe all!

Seabee is Kovar's baby. You should thank him by PBEM. He has been a lot of help on tech issues because he knows this stuff, while the rest of us dabble and can report what worked for us.

I'm a WitP vet, if you will, and have been playing since the game came out. On my new i9 desktop and laptop, both with NVIDIA RTX card/chip, combat resolution runs fine, but I have two problems. One, with -altFont and without, the text is jagged. Two, clicking on a button or unit is followed by a one second delay before the new screen pops up. I've tried different switch combinations. Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas?

Thanks

Yes, I recently got a new machine and after about 5 min utes of trial and error got things running smoothly.

Could you please copy and paste into a post here your target line (whole line, not just the switches) as that will help to see what might be happening.

Also, what is your maximum screen size?

I am not sure what you mean by "jagged" text - can you do a screen shot?

I just got a new laptop and am over 70. Downloaded the game, the update, and the Beta, and everything worked. The Beta sets up the desktop icon with only the -w extension, and the game ran OK, but somewhat of a delay on clicks during orders phase (of course, my aim could be a little off, too; it won't click if you miss the arrow). Anyway, after adding -dd_sw -deepColor -AltFont -SingleCPUOrders extensions it's working better. Still trying to get the window a little bigger - 1920x1080 doesn't seem to work.

I had to settle for 1680X1050 (one of the resolutions supported by my video card) when I was forced to Windows 10.
Korvar posted methods for getting full screen on Win10. Look for his posts on the Tech Forum.

Try adding f to resolution (-pxf -pyf). On my new laptop it refused to change to not rounded up values, without f.

Using -pxf1600 -pyf900 works perfectly. Also, set the taskbar to disappear in desktop mode. I lock the taskbar on the left, it shows up when I move the cursor all the way to the left, but otherwise is invisible. At this resolution I have a full screen with both top menu and bottom info visible - using higher resolutions neither were there.

THANKS !!

I have discovered that by also upgrading to new maps the lag time is greatly reduced, and also the mouse click delay has been greatly reduced too. The newer video cards have a hard time with the old graphics.

Here is a link to new maps with hexes. Hexes must be toggled on in the game menu to see the new map.

Hey Everybody,

I have been following this discussion with interest. Like many (most) of you I have been very frustrated with the slow performance of WitPAE on Windows 10......and I have given up waiting for someone at Matrix to put out an update for us computer challenged gamers that is going to fix the problems for us!

So today I took the plunge and followed the direction given by some of the more computer literate folks here to correct the issues. Much to my surprise my computer did not catch on fire when I modified WitPAE as suggested. Many thanks to BBfanboy and others!

However,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,there is always an "However"

Somehow I have much more of the map on display now and the font size used when I pull up a base / task force is so small I can hardly see it! Can any kind soul out there take pity on me and send some advice my direction on how to get my game back to the point where I can see the display again?

Thanks in advance!

Everything is a trade off. The more of the map acreage on display, the smaller the size. You have to play with the different px and py values until you get a satisfactory trade off of mapa acreage and font size. Start with the default levels and then work your way up.

More precise assistance is only possible, as Lowpe has posted, upon receipt of details of your set up.

Alfred

Did "gmsitton" ever post again?

Perhaps he read some other topics and worked out what switches to use.
