Ki-21-IIa Sally x 37
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 3 – nowhere near enough escorts
Ki-21-IIa Sally: 5 destroyed
Allied aircraft – and far too many fighters… actually, if 51st PG hadn’t shown up this wouldn’t have been quite so bad. I will send a big sweep over Chittagong tomorrow in the hope that the allied fighters fly CAP over it again.

14th Ku T-1 arrives at Kwajalein Island – Mavis patrol takes 50 experience pilots but I only have a few Mavis aircraft in the pools. It will take a while to fill this group out with planes but they are the only Mavis group allowed to take replacements.
14th Ku T-1 Det arrives at Kwajalein Island – converted to Mavis and recombined with the above.
14th Ku S-1 arrives at Makin – a Rufe group. Fighter pilots with experience in the 70s are assigned and 8 of the 9 aircraft this group can take are issued. I’m only producing 1 Rufe per day so it will take a few months to fill out the Rufe groups already on the map, with a couple more to arrive shortly. It’s good to get some more IJN fighter training groups.

Here's the current state of the IJN Fighter force sorted by average group experience.
KB is about half full of 80+ experience pilots with 22 more in the pool waiting to join KB groups once it docks.
Of those 22 pilots, 6 are aces and one is the current leading ace CPO Isozaki who is on 9 all from the earlier battles over PNG.

Morale is low in a few of the KB airgroups. Those pilots mustn't like flying range 7 CAP every day, but they are nearly back at Truk where I will give those groups a few days of stand down.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack near Donggala at 68,97
ACM Nichinan
SS S-39 is sighted by escort – someone on the ACM must have been paying attention!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Chittagong , at 55,41
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 21
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 4 destroyed – not good as these are 70+ experience pilots, but I will keep it up as I feel I can win a war of attrition here. The RAF don’t get many replacements and the USAAF are losing a lot of P40s.
Allied aircraft
Hurricane IIa Trop x 2
Hurricane IIb Trop x 6
P-40E Warhawk x 15
Hurricane IIb Trop: 1 destroyed
P-40E Warhawk: 6 destroyed
Aircraft Attacking:
4 x Ki-43-Ic Oscar sweeping at 20000 feet * (<--does anyone know what this * means?)

CAP engaged:
No.17 Sqn RAF with Hurricane IIb Trop (1 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 20000 , scrambling fighters between 0 and 20000.
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 44 minutes

Group patrol altitude is 15000 , scrambling fighters between 0 and 15000.
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 39 minutes
No.605 Sqn RAF with Hurricane IIa Trop (0 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 10000 , scrambling fighters between 0 and 10000.
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 2 minutes – interesting that this is only 2mins seeing as the Oscars are sweeping at 20k’ (unless the * above means something like “not” at 20k’?!)
51st PG/16th PS with P-40E Warhawk (1 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 10000 , scrambling fighters between 0 and 10000.
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 5 minutes

Ki-21-Ic Sally x 38
Ki-21-Ic Sally: 1 damaged
Allied ground losses:
84 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 7 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 7 disabled
Airbase hits 3
Airbase supply hits 10 – good to destroy supply
Runway hits 29 – just to try and stop the defenders rebuilding a fort level or 2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Chittagong , at 55,41
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 32 – I have 4 big fighter Sentai that I can rotate through these sweeps, leaving the smaller Sentai and dets to local CAP and night CAP over the Magwe Oilfields. I will use 2 of the big Sentai on local CAP and 2 on Sweep, rotating them out of the Sweep mission when their fatigue rises. I think I can break the allied Sqns doing this while keeping my Fighter Sqns from getting too tired.
Allied aircraft
Hurricane IIb Trop x 1
P-40E Warhawk x 1
P-40E Warhawk: 1 destroyed
CAP engaged: Only 2 of 5 groups from the first sweep rise again to meet this sweep

Also attacking 46th Indian Brigade ...
Also attacking 17th Indian Division ...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on 9th Chinese Base Force, at 72,58 (Pakhoi) – trying something new in China to increase the skills and experience of the Oscars there. Pakhoi is still in supply with lots of flak, so I wont try this again! Oscar-Ib has a 7.7mm and 12.7mm MG so not enough firepower to make this worth losing pilots as I am trying to improve them from 50 experience up to 70 experience in China before sending them forward to replace losses in 3rd or 5th Air Divs.
Ki-43-Ib Oscar x 12
Ki-43-Ib Oscar: 1 damaged
Ki-43-Ib Oscar: 1 destroyed by flak
10 x Ki-43-Ib Oscar bombing from 100 feet *
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on 9th Chinese Base Force, at 72,58 (Pakhoi) – I will leave Pakhoi as an bomber pilot training range.

Morning Air attack on Chungking , at 76,45
Ki-21-Ic Sally x 19 – just the 1 x Sally Sentai for now as a few others are working on disrupting the defenders at Chihkiang.
Ki-21-Ic Sally: 3 damaged
Airbase hits 2
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 4
Aircraft Attacking:
19 x Ki-21-Ic Sally bombing from 15000 feet

Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on 64th Chinese Corps, at 72,58 (Pakhoi)
Ki-51 Sonia x 4
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on 8th Route Army , at 75,45 , near Chungking – the hex one west of Chungking, I spotted more Chinese units moving SW (destination TBC, either Kunming or Kweiyang). I didn’t notice until reading this that it’s the Communists who start the war near Sian/Yenan.
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 29
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 1 destroyed by flak – more evidence that I shouldn’t be using Oscars on strafe missions, but this does give me some useful intelligence that would not be available without ground attack missions. I will run more ground attack missions once the Nicks arrive, but at a higher altitude to avoid flak while still gathering intelligence on what allied units are where.
Aircraft Attacking:
29 x Ki-43-Ic Oscar bombing from 100 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on 99th Chinese Corps, at 82,52 (Changsha)
Ki-51 Sonia x 8
Ki-51 Sonia: 1 damaged
Also attacking 74th Chinese Corps ...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on 99th Chinese Corps, at 82,52 (Changsha) – Changsha’s Light Industry is showing as 17(144) and Heavy Industry as 7(54). I believe HI isn’t producing as I have troops in the hex, so that should only be 17 Supply that the Chinese are producing per turn in Changsha. Nowhere near enough to support the defenders in the medium to long term, but there is still enough Supply in hex for the flak to be working.
Ki-51 Sonia x 11
Ki-51 Sonia: 1 destroyed by flak
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on 74th Chinese Corps, at 82,52 (Changsha)
Ki-36 Ida x 12
Ki-36 Ida: 2 damaged
Ki-36 Ida: 1 destroyed by flak
Aircraft Attacking:
12 x Ki-36 Ida bombing from 5000 feet – maybe I need to lift the altitude a few thousand feet to try and get above whatever AA guns are still in the hex…
Ground Attack: 4 x 30 kg GP Bomb
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Afternoon Air attack on 93rd Chinese Corps, at 88,42 (Tsiaotso)
Ki-30 Ann x 4
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Amphibious Assault at Babo (83,111)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Chihkiang (78,50)
Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 3280 troops, 241 guns, 226 vehicles, Assault Value = 2793 – tempting to order another deliberate attack with this raw AV ratio being about 2.5:1, but I have a lot more artillery and one more fresh Div marching to the sound of the guns that should arrive within the week. I will keep up the bombardments from artillery and Sallys, then attack again once I have >3000 raw AV.
Defending force 47326 troops, 314 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1124
Allied ground losses:
145 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 16 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 1 disabled

Defending force 38840 troops, 266 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1122
Japanese ground losses:
6 casualties reported
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Allied ground losses:
16 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Tsiaotso (88,42)

Yokosuka 2nd SNLF – all of these units are now available for the NW Australia raids. I will move them to Koepang to join Yoko 1st SNLF and start preparation for their next targets. 16th Army land combat units are preparing for a range of targets from Perth to Darwin to try and confuse allied Sig Int. The plan is that these SNLF will go ashore at the bases they prepare for and capture them so that the 16th Army units can land at occupied bases without suffering huge disruption. I want KB and some BB/CA task forces here to cover this operation, but those assets will be busy in SEAF for a few weeks yet.

Yokosuka 4th SNLF

Molukken Garrison Battalion

Hurricane PR.II sighted over 25th Army
20 x Ki-57-I Topsy transporting 21st Ind.Mixed Brigade to Kunming
19 x Ki-57-I Topsy transporting 21st Ind.Mixed Brigade to Kunming
2 x H6K2-L Mavis transporting 21st/C Division from Horn Island – not all of 21st/C Div landed at Horn Island, with the remainder moved back to Port Moresby. This Mavis unit is moving those that did land back to Lae by air. I will recombine 21st Div elements over the next week or so, but there are a lot of allied subs around PNG right now so using xAK to pick them up is a bit risky.
9 x L3Y2 Tina transporting 23rd Air Flotilla from Milne Bay – reviewing Air HQ locations this turn, I will probably move HQ 23rd Air Flot to Milne Bay but it is still only size 1 (70% to size 2). Once it is size 3 I will move HQ 23rd AirFlot forward. HQ 11th Air Fleet is about to unload at Rabaul (size 5 AF) and HQ 25th AirFlot is about to unload at Shortlands (size 2 AF but will increase to 4 or 5). HQ 25th Air Flot will move forward to Tulagi once the airfield there is size 2 or 3. I am keeping the SEAF Naval Construction Bns busy in PNG and the Solomons, but will need to keep moving them forward to build these priority air bases so that I get long range naval search (Nell/Betty) looking further towards Noumea and Fiji.
4 x MC-21 Sally transporting 15th Army from Cox's Bazar
7 x Ki-57-I Topsy transporting supplies to Yokosuka 4th – all of these transport groups on Timor will switch back to training for the short term.
7 x Ki-57-I Topsy transporting supplies to Yokosuka 4th
6 x Ki-57-I Topsy transporting supplies to Yokosuka 4th
6 x Ki-56 Thalia transporting supplies to Yokosuka 4th
7 x Ki-57-I Topsy transporting supplies to Yokosuka 4th
5 x Ki-57-I Topsy transporting supplies to Yokosuka 4th
Repairs completed on CVL Zuiho at Truk, ship returned to service
Japanese forces CAPTURE Ambon !!!
Mare Island expands airfield to size 6
Adak Island expands port to size 2 – The NEAF reinforcements can’t arrive quickly enough. Only 16 days until A/50th JNAF AF Coy arrives, 20 days until 3rd Maizuru SNLF and 3x Infantry Bns arrive. 27 days until 51st IJN AFU arrives. I plan on using the 50th to 59th IJN AFUs in NEAF with the embedded engineers to build patrol and fighter airstrips.
Medan expands airfield to size 3 – that will do for Medan airfield.
Soerabaja expands fortifications to size 1

Close up of the Battle of Chihkiang below. Most of the IJA Divs didn't make it into the picture as I've split them into thirds in the hope that they recover disabled squads quicker that way.
IJA 34th Div has just arrived and is fresh, while the Chinese 44th Corps just arrived with a bit over 200 fresh AV.

After Chihkiang is captured, I'm thinking about sending most of this army east to try and block the 200k+ Chinese Army in the vicinity of Changsha from withdrawing to Chungking, or at least beat it up and slow it down. The ideal would be if I can capture Changteh next and close the withdrawal routes to the Chinese at Changsha. I could work on this while 20th Army is moving south from NCAA, then recombine everyone for the push to Chungking.

If you bomb above the anti-aircraft artillery, you won't lose the fighters. If you want to train them, send them on a sweep.

I was just checking the current status of the IJA Fighter Force.

2nd Air Army and 2nd Air Div in Manchukuo contain my basic training units. Brand new pilots fresh from replacement pool join this force. Once they reach 50 experience and about 70 skill on their main skills they move to the General Reserve.

1st Air Div in Japan is then an advanced training Div. I still have some <50 experience pilots here, but will generally replace these groups with "graduates" from 2nd Air Div. Fighter pilots flying 70% CAP Range 0 are increasing their experience, air skill and defence skill quite nicely without raising fatigue or dropping morale. Once they reach 70 experience these pilots graduate and move back into the General Reserve pool.
4th Air Div has moved to China and is another advanced training Div. It doesn't have any official units yet but 87th Sentai has moved to China, based at Hengyang which belongs to Kwantung Army because of a Kwantung Army unit being top of the stack when it was captured.

3rd and 5th Air Divs are front line active service Divs. They take 70+ experience pilots from the General Reserve pool (graduates from 1st and 4th Air Divs). I am not moving any 80+ experience pilots to Training Command. They are staying on active service so that they keep a quality advantage over the allies.

IJN Air Flot HQ locations also plotted just for info.

From this review I am going to move 1st Sentai from Palembang to Burma. I had "farmed" the good pilots from 1st Sentai but it can provide CAP over a rear base like Rangoon and be closer to the front line to provide support in an emergency now that the allied air threat to Palembang has effectively passed (apart from a Carrier raid).

There are only 4 more Fighter Sentai due to arrive in 1942 so this force structure is pretty much it for the next year.
I will start building Nick-A Fighter Bombers at 60/month from 1 May and start converting Light Bomber units to Fighter Bombers to assemble a better anti-bomber capability. The first unit to get them will be the 84th IF Chutai as they don't need to pay PP to receive them. They are training up their FB skills at Saigon in preparation.

Any particular reason why you retained 4 Sentai in its original detachments and not merge them? Same for 77 Sentai.

I recombined 3rd Sentai but that meant I lost the ability to change it to FB.
I should have waited until 5/42, changed all dets to Nick then recombined 3rd Sentai.
I didn’t save the game just prior so to avoid that again I haven’t combined 4th Sentai.
Now you’ve reminded me I just saved the game and 4th Sentai combines without losing the FB option.

For the 77th Sentai, the A and B dets don’t have a withdrawal date, while the main unit has to withdraw 7/44.
I figure I can keep the A and B dets for the whole war if they aren’t combined. They both expand to 16 planes in 3/44.

4th Tank Regiment arrives at Tokyo – this unit was lost when the ships it was on were both torpedoed one hex from Rabaul. It is a light tank unit so I’m still undecided where to send it. It’s been bought out to Southern Army so I’ve got a few days to decide where to ship it to. Maybe China where it won’t be mauled by British or US anti-tank guns.

Yeah, I keep both sites clear with about 5-6 small convoys (~4 xAKL's of 795 capacity and about two dozen ~1570 cap. guys). They also ship supply and reinforcements throughout the region to some extent.

Don't forget these sites are pretty much the 'end of realm' and I have 'eyes' checking the area from there for what incursions my opponent may be making.

37th JNAF AF Unit – great work by this AFU vs a Base Force det, saves the SNLFs for more important duties. This AFU will develop a Jake and patrol base at Bali to try and interfere with allied subs moving through the shallows and wide straits of the nearby hexes. I will also plant a few minefields in the nearby wide strait hexes with ACMs to tend them, once I get some more mines in the pools.

Japanese adjusted defense: 1294 – triple raw AV due to rough terrain
Allied assault odds: 1 to 11
Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+)
Attacker: supply(-)
Japanese ground losses:
279 casualties reported – took a few losses, but I think these can recover before the Chinese can. It may get to the point soon that CS starts sacrificing these units so that they reappear back at Chungking for free before my concentrated field army arrives there. I’d be ok if he does that as I would get a few victory points for destroying these troops, but I hope he doesn’t so that the Chungking operation goes quicker.

Ground combat at 84,42 (near Sian)
Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 4108 troops, 34 guns, 13 vehicles, Assault Value = 153
Defending force 1367 troops, 2 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 10
Assaulting units:
32nd/B Division
Defending units:
55th Chinese Corps – this unit has been spotted moving into this hex on the fast road SE of Sian for the last few weeks. I had no idea it was a 10 AV fraction. It has a friend doing the same thing one hex to the south that 32nd/C Div will block. I have spread 32nd Div along this road to keep the supply line open to Sian. A deliberate attack is ordered tomorrow which may not destroy this unit, but I am ok if it does as I want to concentrate 32nd Div with the rest of 12th Army in the mountains NW of Sian.

Loss of PB Toyotu Maru on Jan 19, 1942 is admitted
13th Air Flotilla arrives at Hamamatsu – will stay here as it can’t be bought out. It really needs a RADM with decent air skill but there aren’t any spare ones in the pools. I have noticed a few VADMs with decent air skills currently in command of Fleets (SEAF and 3rd Fleets from memory) that I will replace when I get some spare PPs then reassign them to Air HQs so they can make use of their high air skill.
26th Air Flotilla arrives at Yokohama/Yokosuka – will move to 4th Fleet, likely Tarawa to support long range naval search and potential long range strikes on opportunity targets
13th Mortar Battalion arrives at Mishan – will stay in Manchukuo as I probably already have enough artillery to conquer China.
18th Naval Guard Unit arrives at Tokyo – to Southern Area Fleet (Southern Fleet in game) to serve as Cebu garrison.
85th Naval Guard Unit arrives at Tokyo – SEAF to garrison Horn Island
86th Naval Guard Unit arrives at Tokyo – SEAF to garrison in the Solomons
87th Naval Guard Unit arrives at Tokyo – as above
88th Naval Guard Unit arrives at Tokyo – as above
89th Naval Guard Unit arrives at Tokyo – as above
I/19th Naval Guard Unit arrives at Tokyo – to SAF to garrison Baybay. This will free up the 10th Special Base Force that I currently have there so it can move back to Tarakan to act as a backup naval base that can rearm and refuel at least CLs. I will check the Port size + naval support squads but it may even allow CAs to be rearmed too.
II/19th Naval Guard Unit arrives at Yokohama/Yokosuka – will join with I/19th NGU at Baybay
III/19th Naval Guard Unit arrives at Tokyo – as above, 19th NGU will recombine and eventually take replacements to fill itself out from 75-100%
3rd Indpt SNLF Coy arrives at Tokyo – will find its way to SEAF eventually, but will occupy vacant allied bases in rear areas around the Philippines on the way
6th Indpt SNLF Coy arrives at Tokyo – same as above, but will probably start in the Philippine Islands and work south to occupy vacant Dutch bases in the Celebes region.
11th Ind.Hvy.Art Battalion arrives at Fushun – will catch the train to China to add more heavy guns to the main axis near Chihkiang, which should be captured before this unit arrives.
12th Ind.Hvy.Art Battalion arrives at Fushun – same as above

There is an enforced operational pause due to some real life work travel, but this allows me to review details before entering orders this turn. I will start with a mid-month “around the grounds” review.

General Defence Army and Combined Fleet:
Enemy subs are present around most major ports. Jakes are starting to keep them spotted using their developing naval search skills but the subs are staying in deep water which keeps them pretty much immune to IJN depth charges.
I will plot a Political Points graph and estimate dates to buy out remaining infantry, plus review options for their targets, but the units I still need to buy out are summarised here. 52nd Div will be available shortly, on paper it is allocated to Burma but is 100% prepared for Noumea in an attempt to confuse allied SigInt. It would also be very useful in NEAF for upcoming Aleutians operations. With carrier support it could potentially destroy the developing USN base at Adak Island. I will also review construction engineer tasks and start to develop a few key airfields. Expanded home islands airfields aren’t needed yet and I want to let the Supply stockpile keep building, but I can afford to build up one or two airfields at a time.

Kwantung Army: Enemy activity consists of Soviet base building. No allied subs spotted in the Sea of Japan recently.
Start disabled AV in Manchukuo garrison units is almost all repaired. 71st Div subordinate units will arrive and allow it to recombine in a few days. This will let 14th/C Div to deploy to China. I will review construction engineer tasks here too and select a few key airfields to build and review fortification building. I will also check 2nd Air Div to see if I can free up a few more recon and bomber Sentai to move to China. I will also forward plan the Political Points needed to buy out fighters and bombers to HQ 4th Air Div which is currently in China, but also start planning for their move to Burma/NE India.

From this review, I am going to move 3rd Cav Bde to NW China once the garrison AV allows. I noticed a few Manchukuo garrison units still have about 100 AV of disabled squads to repair, which will allow the 3rd Cav Bde to move as it only has 40ish.

Only IJA regular force units are shown here. The Manchukuo garrison units are meeting all garrison requirements in the cities.

North China Area Army: Enemy are a mix of fresh and recently defeated, generally holding key mountain or rough terrain. Enemy are low or out of supply near 1st Army. Some enemy units are moving to try and cut my supply lines SE of Sian, but appear to be remnants from previous battles.

1st Army will continue to defend near Tsiaotso.
12th Army will conduct a limited advance on the northern approach to the Chungking plain.
NCAA Reserves include 35th and 110th Divs who will clear roads SE of Sian to allow 32nd Army to move to the HQ 12th Army stack. Once the roads are clear and a solid front line is formed, 110th Div will also join the 12th Army stack.

Mongol Garrison Army: Enemy consists of previously defeated units in isolated Mountain hexes and potentially some more as yet unidentified units in far NW China. IJA forces will garrison cities in the northern mountains and advance into NW China with cavalry to make contact with enemy forces in the far NW. I doubt the Cav Bdes have enough combat power to clear NW China on their own so they will be given “advance to contact, then defend” orders. 26th Div will join NCAA Reserves in support of the main 12th Army stack rather than move into NW China as it would be overkill there. 3rd Cav Bde is moving to take over as Sining garrison which will free up the 2nd Ind Mixed Bde to conquer NW China.

All of the 20th Army units (in grey) are moving to the south and will join the Chihkiang battle and approach Chungking from the south.

South China: Enemy are able to withdraw from all areas including Changsha as they control enough hex sides, but they are not yet moving back from forward positions. Some movement has been detected out of Chungking and Kweiyang towards Yennan mountains, likely small units to try and keep withdrawal paths open.

11th Army: 6x Divs in total not counting garrison troops, 2 are mobile at Chihkiang, 2 are at Changsha and 2 are one hex NW of Changsha in contact with enemy stacks in each location. One of the “mobile” 11th Army Divs will become the future Chihkiang garrison while the other moves to help encircle the Chinese force and lock it up in Changsha.

13th Army: 4xDivs in total not counting garrison troops, 1 each at Wenchow and Chuhsien watching enemy stacks there. 2x Divs are mobile at Chihkiang. I have just ordered 56th Bde to move forward to Chuhsien and close a Chinese controlled hexside there. I have also just ordered 3x small RGC units to Wenchow to close off three hexsides that are still in Chinese control, then will move those RGC units to close the remaining Chuhsien hexsides. In Sep 42 I get a few more RGC units that arrive at Nanking for garrison duties. They will free up the 13th Ind Mixed Bde to move south to take over as the Hengchow garrison, in turn allowing 55th Bde to either join 56th Bde at Chuhsien or take over as the Wenchow garrison. Ultimately I want to try and leave the 55th and 56th Bdes as POW camp guards and move 22nd and 116th Divs forward.

Korea Army and 20th Army (grey units): 7x Divs in total, currently split with 4 in the north and 2.66 at Chihkiang. All 20th Army Divs will move to concentrate at Chihkiang with orders to create a “Changsha pocket”, if the Chinese don’t withdraw first. Once the pocket is formed, all 7x Divs will concentrate on the Kweiyang axis and leave the pocket to be watched by 2 Divs from 12th Army.
That should allow a total of up to 13x Infantry Divs to advance onto the Chungking plains from the south. 4 from 11th Army (leaving 2 at Changsha), 2 from 13th Army (leaving 2 in rear areas) and 7 from 20th Army, plus the 1st and 2nd IJA Tank Divs will be able to form in late June/early July on the front lines.

23rd Army: 51st Div is advancing into Kweiyang, but will hold there awaiting reinforcements. If the Chinese withdraw without fighting the 51st Div will follow up towards Kunming if possible. 19th and 20th Divs will also join 23rd Army and push West to open the road to Kunming. Once that is achieved they will return to the Chungking plains to add two more Infantry Divs to the attack.

At Kunming, once all of 21st Ind Mixed Bde is in the hex I will withdraw the 2 x Raiding Regts and move them across to Burma.

All units at the bottom of the image are at Chihkiang with HQs CEA and 13th Army. I am moving 138th Inf Regt NE to try and get the Chinese stack at Chihkiang to retreat away from this hex, but they may not arrive before the city is captured. Once 13th Div arrives at Chihkiang (about 35 miles to go so 3 days) and builds itself 1 level of field forts I will launch the next deliberate attack.

17th JAAF Base Force is moving to Tuyun to establish a bomber airfield closer to Chungking.

HQ Southern Expeditionary Army is at Rangoon, Burma
Enemy has been routed in Burma, are strong at Chittagong, but recon of Assam shows it as lightly held. RAF and USAAF are active in the air. Only RN and Dutch subs spotted since the RN cruiser force was sunk in the Bay of Bengal. No more intel on Chinese units moving to India but the presence of at least a few Chinese Corps in India is expected.
15th Army: will block Paoshan and advance to the Burma-India border, then conduct a limited advance into Assam. I will make contact in rough terrain and attack only where the odds are favourable, otherwise I will create a static front and hold the line until China is conquered.
25th Army: I've just ordered a battlegroup based on 18th/Div C plus an artillery Regt to move NE to threaten Chittagong’s flank and see if that prompts allied moves out of Chittagong. IJA AT guns are moving to 25th Army. I will build up air bases in the Arakan region (especially Akyab and Cox’s Bazar) and work towards getting Sallys bombing allied troops who are in the open. I will only advance into Chittagong if defenders start moving out. I will try and force an allied withdrawal from Chittagong by threatening supply lines rather than putting in a frontal assault, as Chittagong likely has level 3-4 forts by now.

This has prompted me to move a variety of units:
- HQ Southern Army will move to Shwebo to keep it in range of the Infantry Divs, and hopefully drag supply forward with it
- 5th Div is moving to Akyab by ship, then will walk to join 25th Army.
- 1st JAAF Base Force will move to North Burma, likely Myitkyina to build it up as a fighter and bomber base for missions over Assam.
- 7th JAAF BF will move to Akyab so it can support sweeps and bombing missions over Calcutta.
- 15th JAAF BF will move forward from Bangkok, but stay in depth at Chiang Mai for now
- HQ 21st Air Flot will move to Rangoon. The Army is handing over responsibility for air defence to the Navy. Because of this I've just transferred a group of 50 experience Zero pilots into Kanoya Ku S-1 at Bangkok and moved the planes that can fly to Rangoon.
- both Raiding Regts will catch air buses to Mandalay

16th Army: Enemy ground units present in Darwin and Katherine in moderate strength. No fighters spotted but some bombers likely on naval search.

Prep for NW Australia raids continues, awaiting KB and IJN surface combat forces to support amphibious landings. 5th Air Div will continue to bombard Darwin from the air and will soon start taking recon photos of Broome, Derby and Wyndham from the IJN airfield at Koepang.

You have a no holds barred game no? Just buy out the 2nd Air Div HQ to a non-restricted HQ. All the air units tied to 2nd Air Div will become unrestricted as well and be free to move as you wish.

If you load restricted naval air units that can go onto carriers, AV, or CS class, then they will become unrestricted. Then enlarge them to 81 slots and use them as well.

While I could buy out all of 2nd Air Div in that way, I don't want to move all of those units out of Manchukuo as I currently need most of them for basic pilot training. I also can't move too many IJAAF Airfield Bns as the 9xAV they contain each are currently needed in the Manchukuo garrison. The air units I have my eye on are those that don't have to withdraw. This is a good reference for how the IJAAF were organised historically. By the end of the war there was one Air Army assigned to each theatre. https://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/Japan/IJA/HB/HB-4.html

In this game I am keeping 2nd Air Army assigned to Kwantung Army, with 2nd Air Div the basic training force. I have effectively loaned 4th Air Div to China Exp Army for the next 6-12 months of game time, and they may even move to Burma or NE India for a while, but if the war is still going in 1944 the plan is to move 4th Air Div back to Manchukuo. From this review, I am also going to loan 2nd Air Div (but only the air units shown on this chart) to China Exp Army.

I just noticed I've been using the wrong symbol on my charts for the Hikodan (Air Brigade) locations as I thought they were Regts. IJA Air Bde units are not present in game in the form of a Bde level Air HQ, but the JAAF Base Forces have the same numbering system as the historical Air Bdes. As a generalisation, those Air Bdes contained 1xFighter, 1-2xBomber and maybe 1xRecon unit so they could act as a multi-role tactical unit. I'm trying to keep that sort of organisation inside each Air Army in each theatre, ie:

- Each Air Army reports to an Area Army HQ and contains 2-3x Air Divs.
- Each Air Div contains 2-3 x Air Bdes.
- Each Air Bde (represented in game by the ## JAAF Base Force unit) contains 3-4 x JAAF AF Bns plus 3-4 x flying Regts (Sentai) and flying Bns (Chutai).

I am too lazy to do that much work.

Just because the units are bought out does not mean that you have to move them. Save the PPs, you can always send the air unit back.

I have done this for all Float Planes groups that allow it on the size 24 CS Chitose class ships. Some that have their own baked in size changes can't be resized, but I will check again after those changes occur.

I haven't yet "supersized" any carrier capable groups as CV Akagi has been busy on the front lines, but I am about to start doing that using the size 71 CV Hiryu. When Akagi gets back to Japan I will increase these groups to 81. I'm currently planning to do this only to the following air groups:

Ominato Ku S-1 A5M4 Claude
Ominato Ku T-1 B5M1 Mabel

Yokosuka Ku K-2 B5N1 Kate
Yokosuka Ku K-3 D3A1 Val
Yokosuka Ku S-1 A5M4 Claude

33rd Ku T-1 B5M1 Mabel
33rd Ku T-2 D3A1 Val

Tateyama Ku T-1 B5N1 Kate

I don't have the 500+ pilots to fill these groups out with trainees yet, but will bring the pilots in once they graduate from basic flying school. I won't be deploying these large groups to forward areas, but will use them to help boost the pilot training program.

I don’t actually have to spend any PPs to get more planes into China as some of the ground units I’ve moved out of Manchukuo are making captured Chinese bases belong to Kwantung Army, so 2nd Air Div units can fly to those bases for free. I’m only going to move out the 2nd and 4th Air Div HQs plus the 2nd, 6th, 8th and 9th JAAF Base Force units. I’ll leave the AF Bns behind until the KA garrison allows a few of them to be moved too. .

Southeast Area Fleet:
Enemy BB/CA and heavy bombers/long range search are known to be present. There is a risk of concentrated USN + RN CVs and overwhelming surface combat task forces in the South Pacific, however USN fuel supplies may still be low this far from the West Coast. As I've spotted RN BBs down here, I am half expecting that CS has concentrated all USN and RN carriers in the South Pacific. I will keep all of my carriers together for the next raid just in case they show up near Noumea. I know that Noumea, Suva and Pago have been built up as well as New Zealand, so there must be allied ships moving around behind that line. With the 6th and 7th Aus Divs spotted in NE India, Australia may be relatively lightly held, but 14th Army on its own isn't strong enough to take on Eastern Australia.

The current focus is to build up PNG and Solomons air bases and get long range naval patrol and recon eyes further into the South Seas. I will try to capture as far south as Efate in this next phase. 14th Army is preparing to attack Noumea but I won’t launch that operation until I know what allied forces are on New Caledonia. I am mainly moving SNLF and JNAF Coys forward right now, but will follow them up with Naval Construction Bns and Naval Guard units. CS has shown that he likes to send bombardment task forces forward, so KB will sortie south shortly to try and catch one in the act.

4th Fleet (Central Pacific Area Fleet):

Enemy is mainly subs, otherwise it is very quiet. Seeing as the allies abandoned Wake Island I am wondering if they have done the same thing to Baker and Canton Islands. I’ve seen some evidence of the allies building up Christmas Island PO and Midway, but not much else in this area yet.

I’m currently fortifying the Marshall Islands, building a few air bases in the Gilberts, and also pushing forward a screen of JNAF Coys to support naval search and recon dets. I want to make contact with allied ground forces and also push subs forward to try and identify the allied main supply routes, but as I push small task forces forward they will be vulnerable to raiding USN destroyers or similar. I could really do with a few more Mavis-L transport units to help push the front line forward without having to risk ships out here, but I am only building 10 of those planes / month.

Northeast Area Fleet:

The enemy are building up Adak Island as a major forward base and I just spotted another allied task force moving west near Ulak Island. The allies might push further west in the Aleutians before I can get any troops out there to contest these bases.

Preparations for an operation into the Aleutians to capture Attu, Kiska and Amchitka are in progress, but the ground units required don’t arrive for another 17 days. By coincidence, I will have enough PP to buy out the 52nd Div in 17 days as well, and I’m leaning towards moving it to NEAF for two reasons:
1. I may be able to create an opportunity to destroy whatever the allies have moved to Adak Island. If I can capture Attu Island I can put some recon over Adak to find out whether an attack by 52nd Div would work, and get them planning for it. This would need a decent percentage of the Combined Fleet to be on the scene to get them safely ashore.
2. The allies may be planning an all-in drive through NORPAC, so if I move 52nd Div to NEAF that would also provide some insurance against that sort of allied venture.
Having spotted the RN BBs in SOPAC recently, I am starting to think CS is more likely to have concentrated all allied CVs to SOPAC, but all I can do to counter is to keep my CVs together and maintain the initiative by attacking where I choose and make CS react to me. This should work for about the next 8 months of game time.
I am also building up Kuriles air bases and fortifications, plus expanding a few key ports on Sakhalin and Hokkaido to help move resources.

Enemy is mainly subs,

you want to focus on killing as many as you can from start until about 8/43. There is an under the hood upgrade to allied ASW and SS that happens then and you ability to kill will drop off tremendously. Worse, they get much deadlier. So I work to create SS traps, sacrificing some xAK's or whatever to get subs. even a 1:2 ratio will work for me.

Again, if you buy out the 2nd Air Div HQ to a non-restricted HQ, the 203rd would enter as a non-restricted 2nd Air Div unit. Free to move or not to wherever you choose.
