This shows the territorial gains over the last month and plans for the coming month.

NCAA will generally switch to defensive posture unless the Chinese forces start withdrawing.
CEA will consolidate in south/central China then open up the road to Kunming.

25th Army will remain on defence on the Arakan coast as Chittagong looks to be too strongly held with 2xAussie Divs plus attachments there. I will keep trying to get the upper hand in the air war before moving forward on the ground.

15th Army will advance to clear Burma and advance to contact in Assam (NE India).

SNLF will commence the NW Australia raids and 16th Army will launch from Timor.

Allies have just been detected building up Koumac on the north tip of New Caledonia and more USN/RN/RAN/RNZN/RNN contacts are being spotted around Sydney. Without air cover from IJN CVs, the 14th Army will hold at Guadalcanal and build up an IJA base at Lunga while the IJN build up Tulagi.

NEAF will be a focus for the next few weeks with an allied infantry Regt just detected at Attu Island.
KB is moving north to hunt allied shipping in the eastern Aleutians / Alaska coast and support the capture of a few bases in the western Aleutians.

Check of the IJN fighter force.
A few active service groups need their orders adjusted to let morale improve.
The basic training groups now have about 350 pilots in them (red circles) so they will train about 100 pilots/month up to 50 experience.
Going through the land based groups, 14 IJN fighter pilots reached 81+ experience last month so they will "graduate" to KB airgroups and swap for pilots still in their 70s.
I will also swap out all of CVE Hosho's fighter pilots for at least 70+ experience.

Not quite what you suggest, but I’m thinking of getting the KB into the areas along the Alaska and Canadian coast to see what easy targets are there.

The other options I thought of for the CVLs was to set their Kates to ASW patrol, but I will leave them as extra eyes on naval search with the fighters adding to defensive CAP.
One of the main reasons comes back to pilot training. By keeping DBs as the ASW aircraft it means I can find DB pilots quicker when sorting the pilot pools.
Skills training then becomes:
Kate, Nell and Betty pilots: Torpedo attacks, Naval bombing, naval search - limiting these to three skills for now will get them into active service groups quicker
Val pilots: naval bombing, naval search, ASW
Jake and Glen pilots: naval search, ASW

I also just noticed from a group I set to train naval bombing at 2k feet for the last few days that they trained normal naval bombing, not low naval, so the low naval altitude must still be 1000k’ and below.

Potentially unescorted, this Fiji class is one of the best CLs the RN gets. It is moving east past Albany which is another indication that the allies are concentrating their combined fleets in SWPAC/SOPAC.
If the RN is mostly in SWPAC, and due to the British Indian Army concentrating in NE India, conditions might be ripe for a deep Indian Ocean raid with SNLF landings to potentially cut off Colombo from resupply. I feel like I need to keep up the pressure around the map to try and force the allies to react and split their forces, and not just let them build up a large concentrated force in SOPAC.

Defending force 23225 troops, 83 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 679 – very tempted to try a deliberate attack here so I might get impatient and just do it. If I can wait a few weeks I will win here with minimal casualties, but that sort of thinking would have got a historical IJA General sacked.
Allied ground losses:
34 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 0 disabled
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Changteh (81,50)
Japanese Bombardment attack – the only reason a deliberate attack wasn’t ordered today was that a few units need some more supply. All units are ordered to defend (no bombardment) to prepare for an attack the day after. With 3:1 raw AV this should get at least 1:1 adjusted. Some of the defending Corps are decent size and forts are probably level 3+, so the Battle for Changteh may last a few days.

Night Air attack on Akyab , at 54,45
A6M2 Zero x 19
A6M2 Zero: 2 destroyed – 2 pilots WIA. Average experience of 71, mostly 70+ but about 10 pilots in their 50s bringing the average down. The reserve pool is showing 4 x IJN fighter pilots as WIA with experience of 45/46. It looks like getting wounded drops experience by 5-10 points.
I probably need to just keep fighter pilots in rear areas until they are 70+ experience, otherwise they just end up as casualties and their experience goes backwards.
It looks like 70+ experience Zero pilots can avoid getting shot down, but still have trouble shooting B17s down, especially at night. The night CAP does seem to be effective though as it seems to reduce the bombing accuracy.
Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 4
LB-30 Liberator x 6
B-17E Fortress: 2 damaged – no ops losses reported
Airbase hits 1

6 plane(s) intercepting now.

Time for all group planes to reach interception is 7 minutes
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Air attack on Cox's Bazar , at 54,43
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 8 – average experience of 78, probably just need more than 2x12.7mm MGs.
Tojo-IIa won’t help that as it adds 2x7.7mm to the 2x12.7mm.
Nick-A fighter bombers are my only hope. 84th IF Chutai just repaired the first Nick-A and the pilots are doing a quick conversion course at Saigon. I am upgrading all groups that can change to Nick for free at one group per day, by letting them take 2 x Nick to replace their 10s of Nates. The added benefit is that it will help reduce supply use during training back in Japan as less planes will be flying. Once the Nick-A “training” groups have taken their 2 planes each, I will let 84th IF Chutai fill out and move it forward into Burma. That should happen before the end of May.
Tojo-IIa is still due 9/42 but the top research factory just reached 29(1) so will start research any day now. I have 6 x Tojo-IA research factories and they are currently repaired to 29, 27, 24, 23, 21 and 18. They should all repair by the end of May, so will have Jun/Jul/Aug to research. Tojo-IIa should therefore enter production at some point in July. With the extra speed it will improve the effectiveness of IJA CAP vs allied fighters (escorts and sweeps).

Afternoon Air attack on Funafuti , at 138,147
CONTACT, USN CVs about 4 hexes SE of Funafuti. Mavis patrols moved forward from Tarawa to Tabiteuea to help keep them spotted. I have very few ships in the area, but have ordered a few PBs on fast transport duty to put move NW. HQ 26th Air Flotilla is only a few days from arriving at Tarawa to bring torpedoes to the area, but I am still building the runway and need a level 2 airfield before they can be used. If this is an allied ploy to spark a reaction it won’t work as KB will keep moving to NEAF to support amphibious operations in that area, starting in about 7-10 days.

Adak Island expands airfield to size 4 – 3 allied units spotted by Glens flying from NEAF subs. I’m guessing mostly engineers but probably an infantry unit as well.
Lahaina expands airfield to size 5
Davao expands fortifications to size 2
Imphal expands airfield to size 5
Dili expands fortifications to size 3
La Foa expands airfield to size 1- the base one NW of Noumea, so looks like plenty of allied engineers are on New Caledonia. After I have a foothold in the Aleutians, KB will move back to SEAF to see if I can clear the seas enough to land 14th Army at Koumac.
1001 Ku U-1 at Tulagi takes H6K2-L Mavis replacements
90th Infantry Regiment takes replacements from Tuyun – while waiting for the turn to come back I got distracted by the Kwantung Army staff and gave them some guidance on a reorganisation. 90th Infantry Regt will become 107th Div in about 740 days, so it will catch a train back to Manchukuo to recover. As the AV of 90th Inf Regt recovers it will allow the JAAF AF Bns from 2nd and 4th Air Divs to move into China to support more bombers over Chungking.

I think that wounded pilots lost 10% experience, I know that they do lose some.

CONTACT USN CVs, now 8 hexes NE of Funafuti, 12 hexes SE of Tabiteuea, moving NE. 5 ships spotted, 1BB 1CV so 3?? (likely DD). 7 fighters, 22 bombers, 1 auxiliary. Probably 1CV, 1CA and 3DD. I wonder if CrackSabbath is trying to sink an AV with those port attacks. I don’t have any AVs this far forward, the JNAF Coy units provide 8 aviation support each so I am using them to support float plane and Mavis dets. Tabiteuea airfield is size 0 but 85% on the way to size 1, Tarawa is 0 but 87% to size 1. I have 6 x Rufes at Tarawa with 70+ experience pilots and I can move some Zeros forward from Kwajalein & Roi Namur once there are runways on these atolls.
I am assuming that the next stop for this allied raider group will be Baker Island. I have 3 x subs near there on defensive patrols so will move them to try and intercept. I would love to torpedo a USN CV way out here…

Then it is CVE Hosho’s turn in NEAF, spotting this AVP moving towards Attu Island. I have 6 x IJN subs lined up on the approach to Attu Island that this task force will run across. I am keen to sink the AVPs so that Catalinas are harder to support up here.
CVE Hosho has CS Chiyoda and CS Nisshin in company, with 6 x DD Kamikaze escorting. It will move west of Attu Island next turn with Kates set to naval attack at 5k’, port attack secondary in case the AVP disbands in a port nearby.

CA Indianapolis is reported to have been sunk near Baker Island on May 05, 1942 – I checked the stats of I-155. The skipper and crew are no super stars, but they take the award for best performance today. The CO’s Leadership 44 and Inspiration 37 didn’t seem to matter today, but with those stats this will be his last patrol.

Normal range for a Val is 6. At 7 the bombs they carry are very small.

Are you aware that each of these conversions require 10PP/plane?

Very aware, but feel it’s worth it.
I summarised all groups that I will pay to convert and prioritised them on the weekend just gone.
Will post a pic later, but the damage comes to about 3000 PP. Only 60 days worth, or 2 infantry Divisions!
I’ve already converted the free ones but need to start paying now.
One more week to buy the 52nd Div out then I’ll make a few more FB groups.

With PDU on, its worth it IF you have the economy sized to take advantage of it.

Big IF...
I have a plan for the aircraft and engine factories to support production of more FBs, but if you mean something else then I will find out what I've missed in a few years time!

One "benefit" of making a mistake with 3rd Sentai is that it can still convert to Randy for free, I just need to survive until 11/44 to do it (less with some research).

Here is the conversion plan (mainly FBs but a few other randoms in there) including where I plan to use them.
One of my main rules is that I am not going to spend PP to convert any air groups that have a withdrawal date.
Total PP for this list is 3160 but I don't have to do them all at once.

I will only change the land HQs that I need to unless I start swimming in PP one day.
If I didn't have to pay PP for I would reorganise the HQ reporting structure to the one shown here to help organise everything.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR May 06, 42
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Air attack on Akyab , at 54,45
A6M2 Zero x 1 – I’ve moved this group back to Rangoon as it is part of 22nd Air Flotilla and is needed in NW Australia. This was a straggler that had just repaired. The important things are that it wasn’t shot down and it disrupted the night bombers.
Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 3
B-17E Fortress: 1 damaged
Aircraft Attacking:
3 x B-17E Fortress bombing from 10000 feet
Airfield Attack: 8 x 500 lb GP Bomb
CAP engaged:
Kanoya Ku S-1 with A6M2 Zero (1 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling)
1 plane(s) intercepting now.
Group patrol altitude is 10000 , scrambling fighters between 0 and 10000.
Raid is overhead
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Attu Island at 153,49
SS I-8 – great work, there goes the second AVP that was on its way to Attu Island. Allies will need to try again if they want to support Catalinas this far forward. I hope they try again as KB is getting closer and I’d like to sink reinforcement convoys and auxiliaries in NEAF as much as warships.
Allied Ships
AVP Swan, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
SS I-8 launches 2 torpedoes
Sub escapes detection
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Amphibious Assault at Maumere (66,113)
Japanese ground losses:
5 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled
Guns lost 1 (0 destroyed, 1 disabled)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Fenton , at 76,126 – sweeping Fenton because I can’t quite make the range to Katherine.
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 10
10 x Ki-43-Ic Oscar sweeping at 20000 feet *
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Darwin , at 76,124 – sweeping Darwin in case the Beaufighters try their luck on CAP
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 10
10 x Ki-43-Ic Oscar sweeping at 20000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Comilla , at 56,39 – good to see some CAP flying so I can shoot it down! It’s frustrating spotting fighters but none coming up to meet the sweeps, even though I’d do the same as allies and not fly CAP unless I thought I had sufficient numbers. I will try not to sweep every day and pick different targets just to mix it up, but I could do with more fighters up here to sweep plus provide more defensive CAP. Sweeps will take priority apart from CAP over Magwe oilfields. The army ground units just need to learn how to fire their rifles upwards.
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 20
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 1 destroyed
11 x Ki-43-Ic Oscar sweeping at 20000 feet
Allied aircraft
P-40E Warhawk x 20
P-40E Warhawk: 4 destroyed
CAP engaged:
51st PG/26th PS with P-40E Warhawk (0 airborne, 3 on standby, 16 scrambling)

Japanese Bombardment attack – I didn’t spot movement out of Kunming but last turn I noticed only one Chinese unit remained while the others are showing movement around the NE through rough terrain. One of my main rules is that I am not going to spend PP to convert any air groups that have a withdrawal date.

I used to say this too. Now it depends on my needs and the withdraw date. I've seen some units that withdraw as late as 5/45. I could buy them out.

With PDU on, its worth it IF you have the economy sized to take advantage of it.

Big IF...
I have a plan for the aircraft and engine factories to support production of more FBs, but if you mean something else then I will find out what I've missed in a few years time!

The meaning is the obvious one, but that doesn't make it easy. You're using PP's to switch to an air frame. To get benefit from that PP expenditure, you have to use them. FB's are used 2 ways:
1. Through '42 as behind front lines CAP against 4E over priority targets.
2. As strafers/low NavBomb against light ships.

Using them means they consume supply. In CAP role, not too bad. In the strafing role, they can chew through a fair amount pretty quick. Then there is also the supply to expand the factories and place the aircraft into the groups. This is what I am talking about in terms of economy size.

It is one thing to talk about building 10,000 aircraft, and then quite another to have the supply to support 1,000,000 missions (~100 days for 10,000 aircraft). This is the part that frequently gets overlooked by the IJ player until too late. You need to size your supply stock to meet your anticipated airforce mission requirements. Bombers can blow through a phenomenal amount of supply in a short time.

This is one reason for my focus on RnD for fighters … it is an aircraft the IJ can afford to fly. By '45, unless I have greatly expanded my economic base (India or OZ), I just won't have the supply/economy to match the allied mission count. Planes are not the metric to plan for, missions are.

I agree. I think that fighters are the most cost effective aircraft for the Japanese, points wise anyway. Think of the KB with supersized fighter groups only to shred the DS attack, especially if you can do something to break the DS up so there is less coordination. I am thinking if a few small SCTFs can cause some CVTFs to break away and/or night torpedo/bomb attacks being successful.

I agree Pax, the supply dilemma is a constant constraint.
I did do some supply use planning about a year ago that included estimates based on airgroups training and flying CAP, but I assumed that bombing missions would not be regular.
I will need to remember that and ration the bombing sorties after the initial territorial expansion is done.
The main reason I want Nicks is to have something to counter allied bombers through 1942, so they will mainly be used in the CAP role.
I will also train the pilots for low naval attacks so they can perform those missions when the time comes.

5 x enemy units spotted in hex but no extra intel on who they are.
1 x AP spotted in port but it wasn’t hit.
This test mission was a success in that I now know I can bombard Diamond Harbour without the fortress guns hitting back, even though they had a go. I might send some BBs next. Bombardments of Diamond Harbour might prompt the allies to withdraw some forces from Arakan or Assam regions to bolster the ground defence here, or it might not.
With so much allied strength in NE India, I need to work up some ideas to outflank. I won’t have any spare Divisions until China is conquered and they march overland to replace 15th and/or 25th Armies on the Burma-India border. I’ll need to calculate some timings for marching over slow roads, but that’s probably a late 1942 or early 1943 thing.
The other option is to buy out 2-3 x Divisions + change from China before Chungking is captured. That would need a month of PP for each Division, so maybe a Sep 42 kickoff. A Corps landing on the east India coast to threaten Calcutta from the south should cause a reaction.

Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 80 – the big show today. I remembered to switch some back to CAP tomorrow in and switch targets to sweep and escort a Sally bombing raid on Imphal airfield. Imphal has 5 x allied fighters and 14 x bombers spotted so it probably won’t achieve much. I haven’t used Sallys in anger here for a while so an Imphal air raid is mainly just to do something new to keep the allied Air Marshalls guessing.
I’ve also spotted allied ground movement towards Imphal from both Kohima and Jorhat. I doubt those bases will be completely vacated because the allies know that the IJA Raiding Regts are lurking.

Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1 – this result was unexpected in the rough terrain. The 5th Armd Car Coy assaults across the river with the 9th IM Bde putting in a deliberate attack. I thought the armoured cars might destroy themselves. The defenders must have been completely out of supply here to get this sort of result. Both IM Bdes that I have near here will now join together to try and push them back again towards Yenan.

Buy the units in China as they get trashed, it will make them cheaper.

but I assumed that bombing missions would not be regular.

It still seems that you're opponent is trying to 'build' his way out of an 'auto-vic'.

Yes, he seems to know what he’s doing. No rest for his engineers anywhere.
Oh to have supply to burn like that!

Opposing forces are in contact all over the map now so I need to work hard to maintain the initiative.
The tension is definitely building now as if the allies wanted to they could counter attack me somewhere in SoPac shortly, especially if the allied navies have combined.

Remember that the USN CV's have 2 big upgrades in '42 as do their old BB's. If the allied player wants to increase his AA, he has to do them. Also, F6F doesn't arrive until 3/43, the combination of these two things is what keeps many allied players at bay through '42. This can lull the IJ player into false confidence … the allied player comes out in a big storm in 5/43 with new ships, air units, and every fully trained and morale high.

Albacores do well, but then I sink a big AO to salvage the day.

I've just got a hunch that CS has combined all allied carriers in SOPAC.
With Albacores on land in India my new hunch is that he has stocked the RN carriers with USN or USMC units.

Based on the first hunch I was not confident to send a KB raid deep into SOPAC, but feel that the time is now right to invade the western Aleutians.
Once KB is spotted so far north it may prompt the allies to take a few risks in SOPAC or the IO.

Attacking force 5856 troops, 38 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 211
Defending force 10374 troops, 56 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 373
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 81,40 (near Tienshui)
Japanese Bombardment attack – with the success of deliberate attacks at roughly 1:1 raw AV odds in the south, I might roll the dice on a deliberate attack in North China soon to see what happens. This would be the hex, but it is Mountain terrain. If it doesn’t go well it won’t matter too much. Maybe next turn if all units are in supply.
Attacking force 1905 troops, 139 guns, 127 vehicles, Assault Value = 1015
Defending force 22374 troops, 257 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 847
Allied ground losses:
33 casualties reported
Assaulting units:
12th Tank Regiment
27th Division
32nd Division
12th Army
4th Medium Field Artillery Regiment
North China Area Army

22nd Medium Field Artillery Regiment

Defending units:

24th Chinese Corps
7th Chinese Corps
95th Chinese Corps
21st Group Army
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Kunming (69,48)
Japanese Bombardment attack – tempted to put a deliberate attack in here too despite the Mountain terrain, as I am fairly sure the 11th Chinese Corps are out of supply. The 41st Infantry Regt will start flying in tomorrow, so once they are all in hex I will attack with a raw AV ratio of nearly 2:1
Attacking force 7222 troops, 54 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 246
Defending force 5322 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 200
Assaulting units:
21st Ind.Mixed Brigade
4th Ind.Mixed Regiment
Defending units:
11th Chinese Corps

Remember that the USN CV's have 2 big upgrades in '42 as do their old BB's. If the allied player wants to increase his AA, he has to do them. Also, F6F doesn't arrive until 3/43, the combination of these two things is what keeps many allied players at bay through '42. This can lull the IJ player into false confidence … the allied player comes out in a big storm in 5/43 with new ships, air units, and every fully trained and morale high.

I'm finding it very interesting trying to guess what the allies are up to as there is so little solid intelligence for the IJ player to go on. A human player that I don't know anything about is so unpredictable!
The only intel I can gather is from long range search patrols, subs and relatively short range recon.

Most likely the allied CVs all stay hidden through 42, but most dangerous is that they are all together somewhere waiting to launch a flank speed strike. I doubt they are all up in NORPAC but I will soon find out.

As I've spotted a lot of allied CAs from Sydney to Baker Island and today near Pearl Harbour, I am assuming that CVs won't be too far behind them. All guesswork of course...
