More than 100 sailors on the Roosevelt are infected, the captain is asking the navy for help, saying that on a navy ship they're not able to effectively exercise quarantine and he fears things could get much worse.

Worldometers just added Italy's data. The number of deaths and number of new cases are essentially identical to yesterday's numbers. The encouraging aspect is that this solidifies the strong trend that the number of new cases has flattened or started down. This graph shows the numbers as of yesterday. When added to the chart, today's number will be just a bit lower than that of the 30th.

So far, the only big question is to what extent you gain immunity after you got the virus.

I still haven't found clear answers regarding this, maybe some of you has more resources or studies available.

I posted recently a finding that the virus is mutating slowly. It has as many as 100+ variants now but they differ only in a few genes each, and so the supposition is that the immunity and the vaccine would be longer term. They equated it with something like a measles vaccine.

Also, honestly, I don't see how the quality of some healthcare system compared to another can be helpful in analysing this tragedy. I think that most of the developed western countries are around the same level, some "points" more or less in a ranking don't change much. In general,

Maybe it's my humanitarian worker's fatalism, but in case of troubles I believe it's more a matter of dumb luck than anything else.

For example: in WHO statistics, Czech Republic is quite far behind (46th I believe) and Italy 2nd. Still, I wouldn't be unconfortable in getting cured here instead of Italy (a part from the huge language barrier, of course). I suppose there are strong differences, but they're not as impacting as we might think.

I guess we should consider rankings relatively unimportant in exceptional situations such as the one we are living.

PS. Yes, you Americans are all very proud of your country, don't know whether it is enough to say there is some kind of "exceptionalism", but that's it. I suppose everyone has some kind of "exceptionalism" toward his or her own country.

I think the point is that the US health system may be just as vulnerable as all of the others, especially the excellent Italian and French systems.

The point of stating this is to see how each is now adapting and improving on what others have done. One thing the Us does have is the ability to meet challenges with a lot of resources. I am curious to see how this plays out as it ramps up.

Update: Day 8 since symptoms appeared

I still think I have it but not 100% sure because they're rationing tests in California (annoying because I sure would like to know if I've got immunity!).

I had a fever 3 nights early last week and a bit of shortness of breath and some other symptoms like loss of taste/smell and possibly some mild gastrointestinal. For the breathing, it was perfectly manageable but I was a bit winded doing simple things like taking a walk, and could tell that I was breathing faster and more noticeably. Quite a bit of fatigue but not debilitating. Then I felt better this weekend but had a mild fever the last two evenings and a tinge of shortness of breath. So it matches pretty well but it's all been very mild. I've been way more sick before. But I guess it varies from person to person from asymptomatic to severe along the whole spectrum.

One thing that's strange is that I haven't had a cough at all (seems to appear in 60-80% of confirmed cases, depending on the study). I did have a very little bit of loose phlegm come up a few times in the last few days, so maybe that's the lungs clearing out?

The thread is dedicated to coronavirus. There are many differences in opinion and the vast majority of Forumites manage to get along, or so it seems to me, and there's been alot of vigorous back and forth for weeks. I don't understand the sudden urge to get sidetracked to veer off on unproductive tangents. We know what'll happen. We'll fracture into different camps, argue, and eventually the thread will dry up. Where's the sense in doing that?

No risk of a schism here. Still dedicated to discuss the coronavirus.

Except when you move the discussion to comparing national healthcare statistics. Then it's a sidetrack.

Right?

It challenges assumptions made by some in this thread. Granted, the metric isn't perfect, hence my request if anyone has something better to hand. That could have opened the discussion into an examination of comparative rankings in the sub measures of the ranking and enabled contrasts and comparisons between nations.

Apparently that's a side track for this thread. I'll need to post a few Excel charts of figures, make a few assertions and pontificate on them to fit in here it seems...

It is a good virtual simulation of how a virus spreads . The General Discussion forum was hit by the STATSvid-20 virus (better known as the "My Math is longer than yours" virus, due to its effects) and all the productivity there basically dropped to a crawl.

I fled here. Luckily I was not a carrier.

We looked at the GD hotzone thinking "We are fine. We are demonstrating that this will never happen here". So, instead of being ready and snuff at once a similar event on this forum, we went along - until the first scare happened. Now, containment is in order. We also saw how easy it is for the STATSvid-20 virus to "explode" and spread in a blink.

I always find fascinating when two very different things show the same underlying structure. It is always a learning experience.

This is a really extensively researched map from the NY Times which goes by county records. It's pretty granular for a large visual.

What is interesting to me is that this is getting everywhere now. Even small, isolated rural areas. I would like to see a similar one for where the testing is happening. If anyone sees that let me know.

The granularity of using counties as a means of tracking reporting has me scratching my head a little bit. I like it better than just statewide data, but not all states' counties are the same. For example, Texas has 254 counties, more than any other state. California (with a larger population) only has 58 counties, with most of the population in less than a dozen of them.

So looking at a visual map of cases based on county data would suggest that Texas' infections are more spread out than they are and California's are more cloistered than they are. Iowa, with 99 counties and a lower population would look really spread out. I don't know which is the right answer...

Well, that's a great point. My understanding is that it's the most local you can get with data right now. So if it's not the same everywhere, at least it's better than a dot on a state. I'm surprised at so many very small places where this has gotten to so quickly.

Here is the whole article.

I’m in NYC My agency of about 1,800 is working with essential staff only. Less than 5%, which includes me. Today’s exercise Was work the doomsday scenario of what happens if start to lose some of those 5%. So far I think we are good but we still have to plan. The streets are like the movie Omega Man. Empty, quite and weird as hell. The pigeons must think we have gone extinct. Thankfully I can steer clear of most of the crowded spaces and we have plenty of hand sanitizer.

FDA authorizes two-minute antibody testing kit to detect coronavirus
Updated 41 mins ago

https://www.axios.com/fda-coronavirus-two-minute-testing-kit-bodysphere-a665429d-488d-4edf-bd36-9180e2a06e4c.html

"The Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency approval Tuesday for a serological testing kit produced by Bodysphere Inc. that can detect a positive or negative result for COVID-19 in two minutes.

Why it matters: Access to testing has improved in the U.S. thanks to commercial labs, but the average wait time for a patient's results is four to five days — with some reports of it taking more than a week.

These antibody tests could help people know if they are able to go back to work, as well as aid researchers in tracking the scale and death rate of the disease — key data for current and future pandemic policies.

They're especially useful for determining whether health care workers have some immunity and are at lower risk if they go back to work.

Yes, but: The Bodysphere two-minute test can only detect the coronavirus in people who have had the infection for several days, meaning the test can't be used too early on when the body hasn't produced enough antibodies."

This could be very bad:

https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/Exclusive-Captain-of-aircraft-carrier-with-15167883.php

From the letter her captain wrote about the situation:

“Due to a warship’s inherent limitations of space, we are not doing this [social distancing],” Crozier wrote. “The spread of the disease is ongoing and accelerating.”
[...]
The tight quarters on the carrier are “most conducive to spread,” he wrote, including large amounts of sailors in a confined space, shared sleeping quarters, restrooms, workspaces and computers, a common mess hall, meals cooked by exposed personnel, and movement constraints requiring communal contact with ladders and hatches.

The above is an exact description of my experiences back in the day.

But there is more, and I think that it is obvious. I don't know what kind of operations the Roosevelt was undergoing, but what if asymptomatic crewmembers diffused the Coronavirus to other ships/land installations via either helos, airplanes or motorboats?

Strangely enough, the SF Chronicle piece doesn't address this potential problem.

I read that she is docked in Guam - an island that hasn't hospital spaces for 4.000 potential infected.

This situation should be closely monitored. I'm really worried.

Not to mention they have a nuclear power plant and (almost certainly) nuclear weapons aboard. The need to disembark the crew and leave a skeleton crew aboard and provide security and forget about her cruise.

Put the crew at Anderson AFB in tents if they have to.

Wouldn't this skew the statistics if the end result is compared with a more hazy source of data - like China?

The US Veterans Administration healthcare system is adapting to this:

Veterans, VA brace for COVID-19 impact
Written By: Kirsti Marohn / MPR News | Mar 26th 2020 - 11am.
(I believe that MPR is Minnesota Public Radio)

quote:

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- As more cases of COVID-19 develop across the U.S., military veterans are among those most at risk for falling seriously ill from the disease. They’re also bearing the brunt of many measures aimed at stopping the virus’ rapid spread.

About half of U.S. veterans are over the age of 65, and many have underlying health complications, making them especially vulnerable to the new coronavirus, which often causes respiratory illness in people who are infected.
.
.
State and federal VA officials say early action and experience caring for the very sick — including patients in intensive care and on ventilators — mean the sprawling agency is prepared for a worst-case scenario.

That’s in part because the VA also serves as a backstop to the civilian U.S. health care system for major events — not only war, said VA Secretary Robert Wilkie.

“For natural disasters and epidemics, we provide a backup force for the country, and we rehearse and exercise these scenarios throughout the year,” he said.

Wilkie said the VA has access to federal stockpiles of medical supplies and has a reserve force of 3,000 staff around the country that can be deployed in an emergency. The VA hasn’t received requests from states yet to provide large-scale support, he said.

As of Wednesday, the VA had reported that 365 veterans across the U.S. have tested positive for COVID-19, and four have died.

Meanwhile, VA medical facilities have taken steps to screen patients and restrict visitors. As with other health care facilities, elective surgeries and procedures have been postponed, and nonurgent medical appointments are being rescheduled.

https://www.grandforksherald.com/lifestyle/health/5017032-Veterans-VA-brace-for-COVID-19-impact

But the most important thing for everybody is this one:

quote:

“Social distancing doesn’t necessarily mean that you isolate. You reach out,” Havlick said. “If you haven’t heard from somebody, give them a call.”

So, I don't know if other countries have a comparable system like the US Veterans Administration healthcare system which has links to teaching hospitals as well as doing lots of research. While it has had problems and continues to have problems, most of those are in the administration and support parts and not the medical part.

So everybody, please stay safe and be well. Please, follow the last quote and reach out to people who may be isolating. A phone call might make their day.

Hey Cap-on a serious note:

I've been wondering WTF is up with the >50,000 'pending' COVID-19 tests in CA. Been that way for several days. What's the explanation?

London report.

Here at home. Again. As most of us are. One trip out today. Went to the park, which is a huge luxury. A little place called Wick Wood, a triangle of birch and alder between a Hackney Marshes, the A-12 highway and the Regent's Canal. We took up walking sticks and played hide and seek, and then rode out to tour the ducks in the Lea river on the way home.

I found out a student has had Covid, and her whole family has now become ill. Worrying. She looked concerned on our Zoom call today. Also, a 13 year old boy died today in a London hospital.

Some good news is that new British made ventilators are scheduled to be sent to hospitals next week. The NHS Nightingale Hospital at the Excel convention Center is nearly online, with up to 4,000 beds. The briefing tonight again offered weak responses to why more tests are not being done. They said it is a shortage of chemical reagents to do the lab analysis. I can't imagine that's the whole story if Germany is at ~ 500k tests and are shooting for 200k/day by late April.

The curve of hospital entries seems to be flattening as deaths continue up, but it seems like the lockdown is working. We had some outside work scheduled on our house, re-pointing some bricks and taking out paving. They called to say suppliers have now stopped shipping building materials, so that industry will now be shut down too.

Feel people out again, but the park busy. All keeping distance. I feel like the message is taking hold.

I hope not too much work is needed on your out house in this time of TP shortage.

Yes, fewer large catalogues being sent out and print newspapers are in the decline.

Possibly a fallout of the Roosevelt situation.

Way to snuff any outbreak as soon as possible

Edit: at least this makes sense:

If jolly old England still has a lot of out houses then I suspect the Sears & Roebuck catalogs may be more prevalent over that way. Lend Lease, you know!

That article is from 3 March. I appreciate military commanders who are concerned about the troops under their command and who take appropriate measures.

How is Italy? I appreciate the reports you provide. The news channels fail to convey the urgency of what is occurring.

Nah. Glue is obviously the only thing that holds you together.

Coronavirus: Three out of four Americans under some form of lockdown
3 hours ago

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-52103066

"About three out of four Americans are now, or about to be, under some form of lockdown, as more states tighten measures to fight the coronavirus.

Maryland, Virginia, Arizona and Tennessee became the latest states to order citizens to stay at home, meaning 32 of 50 states have taken such steps.

Meanwhile governors are quarrelling with President Donald Trump about the availability of testing kits.

The US has more than 175,000 confirmed virus cases and over 3,400 deaths.

The US now has more Covid-19 fatalities than China, where the illness was first reported."

Well, who could imagine an army guy could be so smart?

By the way, my step father was in the 5th Rangers, Headquarters Battalion during the big one. Tough SOB's. He scared the hell out of me when I was a kid.
