Coronavirus May ‘Reactivate’ in Cured Patients, Korean CDC Says
April 9, 2020

https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/09/health/us-coronavirus-thursday/index.html

"The coronavirus may be “reactivating” in people who have been cured of the illness, according to Korea’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

About 51 patients classed as having been cured in South Korea have tested positive again, the CDC said in a briefing on Monday. Rather than being infected again, the virus may have been reactivated in these people, given they tested positive again shortly after being released from quarantine, said Jeong Eun-kyeong, director-general of the Korean CDC."

Absolutely true, Warspite.

Yes, pretty unfortunate of me to pull the various cases together - my apology. Monkey see, monkey click.

Lovely weather, I'm looking at my new British fishing rods (the best in the world) and can't get out.

Good luck!

US coronavirus: Scientists say coronavirus won't end with warmer weather while US plans for life under a new normal
1 hr ago

https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/us-coronavirus-scientists-say-coronavirus-wont-end-with-warmer-weather-while-us-plans-for-life-under-a-new-normal/ar-BB12mCxu?li=BBnb7Kz

"With health experts warning that warmer months won't bring an end to coronavirus, officials are developing a framework for what America's new normal could look like."

""What has been so remarkable, I think, to those of us that have been in the science field for so long," Birx said, "is how important behavioral change is, and how amazing Americans are at adapting to and following through on these behavioral changes.""

new-normal where have I heard that before!

Too bad. Luckily, I can walk to some of the best Small Mouth Bass fishing in the world in less than a minute. Along with Rock Bass and various type of Perch. Every now and then I breakout the fly rod.

What part of 'self' having nothing to do with 'we' is too complex a concept for you?

I understood fully the context in which you were incorrectly applying the term 'self moderating'.

Regardless of any need, your presumption that it needs to be you assuming the mantle of moderator is what you fail to grasp as being just as inappropriate as the behavior you are assailing.

I'm not, for a minute, disputing the inappropriateness of some posts, including mine, just taking strong exception with your self appointment as sheriff.

1) "Self" was in reference to the full group, not me (or anyone else) as an individual. "We" are self-moderating is still correct. I don't understand how this is a complex concept.

2) I'm not the only person to have "self appointed" as (a) sheriff. Others have done so, in a far nastier manner than I have done. By your own admission, some of your own posts have been sheriff-like (OK, you didn't just say this in so many words, but they were). Calling me out for providing pushback, even if it is just lampshading a post, is intrinsically hypocritical.

We are self moderating is an inane statement that has no meaning.

The correct structure for what you are failing miserably to convey is 'each of us is (are/should be/needs to be) self moderating'.

Individual actions can only be taken by individuals, not groups.

'We' can't be doing anything that is self actionable.

As I am contributing nothing of value to this thread and find myself reacting negatiively to provocations I have blocked the provacatuers and will endeavour to remain silent from here on.

Americans are 'craving comfort food' during coronavirus: Cereal, snacks, baked goods fly off shelves

"Americans are indulging in comfort food as the coronavirus pandemic keeps them cooped up, eating sugary cereal, junk food, frozen pizza and other maybe-not-so-healthy items to help get them through the pandemic."

This is a novel situation, so we've had to err on the side of caution.

But we've lost a fair bit of context, judging from some of the quotes and headlines posted today and in past days.

During the Spanish Flu pandemic, the US scuffered 195,000 mortalities in October 1918. That's well over 15x the number lost thus far and 3x the number we're projected to lose through August. In the 1918-19 pandemic, the US suffered around 675k mortality, 10x the projection for this outbreak through August. And we were involved in WWI at the same time.

I haven't crunched the numbers for UK, France, Belgium, Germany and other countries but the hunch is that Flu and battle casualties far exceeded what we're enduring here.

This has been the single most gripping news event in decades. For Americans under 50, probably second only to 9-11 (and maybe, for some or many, this will eclipse that). It's a major event but too many drawing on the news and social media reports lack the proper context to measure this by.

We are still living on a "Standard of Living Check" that was written in the 1950s.

1950s America was a Standard of Living the world had never seen. It illusioned us.

Since then, the whole world wants it.

Today, Spain reports a significant drop in New Cases and New Deaths.

The mortality is higher than projected in the Univ. Washington graph (below) but well within the shaded area and consistent with the overall fairly sharp decline.

You know, if you could sneak into Yellowstone this year for the opening of the trout season you could knock 'em dead. Of course, you might end up in grizzly scat

My family enjoyed three epic camping trips out west in 2010, 2012 and 2014. We camped from Texas to California to Wyoming to North Dakota to Michigan and many places in between. We visited many national parks. Our trips were in May, when school was in for most Americans. Most of the visitors to the parks were Europeans and Asians, especially the latter.

Aren't the National Parks and related federal sites closed now? My daughter says Great Smokey Mountains National Park is closed. And U.S. Forest Service campgrounds and picnic areas are closed.

Saw a few dandelions yesterday.

So you know about redbud flowers?!! They taste like peanuts to me.

And Violets are very plentiful now too. I dont eat the Confederate Violets, they are rare.

Good news!

Cautious interim result of a mass investigation in one of the largest clusters in Germany:

14% have gone through the infection and show antibodies and not, as previously assumed, 5%.

Therefore, the death rate can be corrected considerably downwards: to about 0.37%

Yeah, this virus seemed to be a man with education and taste, as Jagger said.

You probably are well aware, but redbud (Cercis canadensis) is a member of the legume/pea family. You're right, the flowers taste just like peanuts.

Pokeweed will be available soon. :)

Yup.

Is there some new research on this?

Because what I have read, other than outliers, is that masks should be reserved to medical staff PPE.

And non sufferers wearing them is a waste of scarce resources.

Hans is one angry man!

Anyway, those of you worrying about fresh stuff, don't

Once the initial shock of the stockpiling dies down, then it will return to normal pretty quickly.

Only thing you can't get over here now is flour and sultanas as it seems the entire UK is attempting to bake bread and cakes!

U.Washington site nailed US mortality yesterday. It seems likely that the level of confidence for models increases as additional date is incorporated. But here's hoping that a new trend will start today for under-reporting, eventually yielding a death toll significantly less than the 60k currently projected.

I'm not sure what you would call 'the top' and how the rankings of the three men convicted over Chernobyl would compare in relative terms with those Chinese officials (seemingly) suppressing the truth - at least iniitally.

The rankings of the three themselves were on different levels; Dyatlov the deputy chief engineer, his boss Formin and the director of the plant Bryukhanov.

Yes, things were covered up higher up in due course, but the start of the cover up (for the reasons stated previously about fear of the consequences) started with these three (assuming the excellent Chernobyl program to be accurate).

I am guessing of course, but I would suspect there was something similar in China when, before the (seeming) official cover up, things would likely to have needed suppressing lower down the food chain (and for the same reasons).
