Run your convoys in coastal hexes as much as is possible. Have your sub chasers restricted to those coastal hexes. If possible, even a few small minefields can help. Those sub chasers can kill subs in the coastal hexes. Then there is the chance of a sub running into a mine. It does tend to destroy the mine, however.

Allied subs are sticking to deep water, so the Dude must have them set to 0 reaction range.
I don't know of any other way to get his subs to move into shallow water.
I think I'll just have to keep trying to bomb them from the air until the Type 2 depth charges arrive.

You should have some DDs with type 2 depth charges. I understand killing subs before their torpedoes improve is a good idea but if he wants to try and sink you ships, get him to move where the ships go. Using shallow water should get the subs there. Use air search to find and negate them but you ASW forces need to be able to kill them, otherwise they are just targets.

Thanks Joe, I just checked and the only DDs that have the Type 2 DCs right now are 5x Yugumos and 1x Akitsuki.
The Yugumos are all in SEAF on BB escort duty and the 1x Akitsuki is with KB in SEAF as well, so they are not available for duty in the Korea Strait.

The DD Shiratsuyu 7/42 upgrade gets T2 DCs but they are the main KB escorts so haven't started that 21 day upgrade yet. The 4x DDs that are escorting the damaged CV Soryu will complete their upgrade while Soryu is under repair. If they finish their upgrade before CV Soryu finishes repairs (likely) they will conduct a commissioning trial in the Korea Strait, but that won't be until early September. The Soryu task force is 2 hexes from Yokosuka so those 4x Shiratsuyu should start their upgrade tomorrow.

The DD Hatsuharu 8/42 upgrade also gets them but they are the CV/CVL task force escorts so haven't started this 21 day upgrade yet either.

The DD Kageros don't get T2 DCs until 12/42
The DD Asashios don't get theirs until 4/43
The pre-war DDs generally don't get T2s until 1944.

The T95 Mod-2 just got a hit in deep water so the larger Subchasers and DDs that have them are the best that is available right now. All DDs are busy on escort duty though. I'll send one of the larger Subchaser divs back there to see how they go.

Yokosuka Ku T-2 converting to E13A1 Jake – there are only two more float plane units on the map that need Jakes.
Soryu-1 converting to A5M4 Claude – Soryu needs 34 days to be repaired at Yokosuka. It will take the 7/42 upgrade in parallel with an extra 18x 25mm Type 96 AA Guns.
Soryu’s 25x A6M2 are needed to provide replacements for the land based IJN fighter force as there are only 28 in the reserve pool right now. The veteran pilots are sent forward to the fleet with rookies replacing them. One of the two size 60 A6M2 factories will go back into production to keep replacements up to the land based fighter force while the A6M5s go to the fleet. So far, 328 A6M2s have been lost to all causes in roughly 8 months. That’s an average of 40/month and they haven’t had to fight particularly hard yet. Due to the situation in SEAF now, that is about to change so building 60/month for a few more months will help build a small reserve pool.

The long awaited 2nd Deliberate Attack at Chungking is ordered for tomorrow. GEN Hata calls the other Generals and their Chiefs of Staff together for confirmatory orders. It is a large gathering; morale is high and all present are eager to get this battle moving after the false start of 9 July. Despite the expectation of significant casualties, the staff officers are trying to figure out when, not if, Chungking will be captured.

GEN Hata reminds all present that the mission tomorrow is to reduce fortifications, not to capture the city. All arms are to support the combat engineers in their efforts to clear the outermost ring of barbed wire, minefields and pillboxes. On the expectation that forts will be reduced to level 5, GEN Hata issues a warning order to prepare for the 3rd deliberate attack in 14 days, on 24 August. Aerial and artillery bombardments will continue as supply allows.

Assaulting units:

CHINA EXPEDITIONARY ARMY, GEN Hata

These two images show the before and after status of the Chungking assault force.
The equivalent of 4x Battalions of infantry were destroyed with about 5x Divisions worth of infantry squads disabled.
The 10th and 27th Divisions were almost completely disabled, while all other Divisions remain combat effective to different degrees.
The staff will assess these numbers and decide how to best let these troops recover, while still keeping enough strength in combat mode to defend against a possible (although unlikely) counter attack.

This is the recovery data from 12-13 August.
Divs in combat mode don't seem to recover as fast as those in reserve mode, and split Divs seem to recover faster too.
After this I changed the bottom half of the Divisions to reserve mode and split all Divs into thirds.
Really high disruption still drops at up to 25 points but that drops away as it gets closer to zero.

Then again for 14-15 August, some decent numbers up to 30AV recovered in some Divs in the last 24 hours.
The biggest recovery numbers in the Divs in reserve mode which makes sense.
I am splitting every Div for the turn now but bringing them together to take this snapshot just to keep comparing apples for apples.
At this sort of recovery rate, this force may well be ready to try the next deliberate attack at +14 days to the last one, so about 24 August.

With +273 raw AV in total today, the raw AV could be back above 5000 within a week from now.

Split divisions will also go above level 2 forts which some whole Japanese divisions tend not to do.

The PB skippers and crews are poor compared to the allied sub crews and skippers, so they need a lot of luck to get an attack in.

Ground combat at Urumchi (79,11) – the defenders probably have enough resources and light industry here to keep themselves in supply, and the IJA don’t have enough of an AV advantage to steamroll this hex. The deliberate attacks will be kept up as supply allows just to keep wearing the defenders down. A lucky die roll is needed to end it though.

A big LRCAP is set for tomorrow as this result will probably encourage the allied bombers to come back.

Defending force 26540 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 383
Japanese adjusted assault: 595
Allied adjusted defense: 226
Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1 – despite the 2:1 ratio there was no forced retreat.
The only allied hexsides are the two to the NW and NE and the one to the SE to Tsiaotso, but there is an IJA Division there. There mustn’t be anywhere close enough for this Chinese stack to retreat to, so I would have to destroy it to free up the IJA attacking troops.
GEN Hata and IGHQ agree that we don’t want 6x Chinese Corps resurrecting at Chungking just yet. Chungking should be able to be captured without these reinforcements from 1st Army, so this sector will now revert to bombardments only until Chungking is captured.

3rd Ind.Mixed Brigade – practically zero active infantry squads, so it will move to Sian to recover.
It is earmarked as the Chengtu garrison so will proceed there once recovered to about 50% strength. That will free up 15th/C Div from Chengtu and let it move back to join the rest of 15th Div in hex guard roles south of Chungking.
41st Division
4th Ind.Mixed Brigade – infantry squads are (124) 48 so this IMB is set to reserve mode.
It is earmarked as the Tsiaotso garrison so will remain in hex.

SC Ch 32 arrives at Okayama – will move to Manila to join sisters Ch30 and Ch31
SC CHa-40 arrives at Takamatsu – pre-war plan was to use this as the first boat in an ASW Div based at Puerto Princessa, but the only allied sub spotted near there is one hex west of Bataan. It will move to Manila to start with and VADM Takahashi as Commander 3rd Fleet will reassess how to use it once it arrives.

Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 10 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on 1st Australian Division, at 76,132 , near Daly Waters – this is the “centre column” of the allied advance. With the allies diluting their forces like this it creates the opportunity for the IJA to move back into Daly Waters to attack 1st Aus Div before the allied Divs on either flank can help it. 38th Infantry Div with 2x Tank Regts in support should be able to reverse the 1st Aus Div, before then withdrawing again itself. 2nd Infantry Div is split into thirds to provide route protection on the Katherine-Daly Waters road.
Ki-21-IIa Sally x 8
Allied ground losses:
40 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled

Morning Air attack on 36th Chinese Corps, at 87,41 , near Tsiaotso
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on 144th Infantry Regiment, at 63,38 (Jorhat) – the big LRCAP does fairly well, but is still not strong enough to stop the bombers. The Int screen reports air-air losses of 3x IJ : 20x allies which is a result I’ll take any day. While it is an encouraging result for the IJAAF, there is a lot more work for them to do to achieve air superiority in NE India.
Warhawk : Tojo kills today were reported as 15 : 2.
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 12
Ki-44-IIa Tojo x 12
Ki-45 KAIa Nick x 4

P-40E Warhawk x 23
Beaufort V: 3 destroyed, 3 damaged
B-26 Marauder: 1 destroyed, 1 damaged
P-40E Warhawk: 8 destroyed – still plenty more P40s in this theatre to try and shoot down, but this will dent the morale of this Sqn.
Japanese ground losses:
21 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Aircraft Attacking:
9 x Beaufort V bombing from 5000 feet

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on 143rd Infantry Regiment, at 63,38 (Jorhat) – the LRCAP doesn’t have the endurance to cope with multiple waves of bombers though.
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 3

Afternoon Air attack on Jorhat , at 63,38 – then the IJAAF counter raid.
Only 1x Oscar Sentai was set to escort the Sallys, so I hope the other Oscars, Tojos and Nicks shown here is just an anomaly of counting all aircraft in hex. I really hope they didn’t divert themselves to escort duty as opposed to flying LRCAP. These numbers could make the allies scratch their head as much as me though, so it should confuse the picture for them too.

Ground combat at Chungking (76,45)
Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 9165 troops, 606 guns, 651 vehicles, Assault Value = 4196, +271 compared to the combat report yesterday, the biggest daily increase seen yet. I expect the rate to slow as more devices recover to 100%, but the recovery has been faster than I was expecting. IGHQ has set the arbitrary target of getting to 5000 AV before giving the green light for the next deliberate attack, maybe only 3-4 days away.
Defending force 127996 troops, 685 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 4069, minus 16 from yesterday which is another pleasant surprise. Fingers crossed that this is a sign that disruption and fatigue are being kept high, with the reverse for the morale of the defenders.

Miri expands fortifications to size 4
Goa expands airfield to size 4
Alice Springs expands airfield to size 6 – it’s a surprise that allied heavy bombers haven’t been trying to help the 1st Aus, 5th Aus and Amercal Divs in the Northern Territory. Maybe this is a sign that they are coming soon.
A6M2-N Rufe upgrading to A6M5 Zero at Hiroshima/Kure – this was a mistake that I can’t undo without spending 30k supply and one month of time, and that’s not worth it so I won’t. The Rufe factory was set to auto upgrade so it did. I was planning to build Rufes for a few more months, then put this factory in mothballs until upgrade to the Rex in 1943. It’s not such a bad thing to build 30x more A6M5 a month though, so they will be allowed to do that. When the Rex becomes available it will then convert to Rex production, so the only thing lost is a few Rufes that I will just have to deal with. They aren’t taking many losses anyway, so I may have enough.

51st Base Force - some devices have been upgraded at Ominato

It’s an illusion Pax! Only one a day, sometimes two on a Sat or Sun.
A wet, cold Sat morning let me catch up on the AAR.

RADM Yamazaki's task force quickly clears the 2x DMS out of the way, but waste some long lance torpedoes in the process.
This allows the bombardments to proceed as planned.

The Bombardment task forces go in but I failed to set Ndeni as the target for KB port and airfield strikes so none flew. I was expecting that they would still launch as Ndeni was the only target in range, but they must have been holding off in case of an appearance by allied CVs.
No reports of damage to the ships in port which is a disappointment, but follow up sweeps and Betty strikes are ordered for tomorrow and might still find them there.

This is where the Combined Fleet end up at the end of the 17 August turn.
The bombardment task forces withdraw on a slightly different path than expected but mostly stay under the CAP umbrella.
No sign of any counter strike or reaction. All surface combatants will withdraw to Manus Islands to replenish and plan the next moves.

KB may loiter for a day or two just in case there is a delayed allied reaction such as a retaliation against Lunga or Tulagi.

Morning Air attack on Tezpur , at 60,36 – no CAP over this big allied airbase either. Dinahs report 71 fighters, 49 bombers and 38 auxiliaries based here. If the allies don’t want to put CAP up then I will setup a Sally/Helen raid. Before I can do that I’ll need more aviation support in Burma, as most of 3rd Air Div’s bombers are still in China.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Tezpur , at 60,36 – this may encourage the allies to launch another bombing raid or put up local CAP, so the IJAAF fighters will go back to CAP/LRCAP duties tomorrow.
A tense game of bluff and counter-bluff is being played here. Whoever guesses correctly and puts up CAP to counter a bombing raid will have the advantage. The air war is far more challenging than playing against the AI, as The Dude is changing what the allied aircraft do each turn and I am doing the same for the IJA.

Morning Air attack on 1st JAAF Base Force, at 61,43 (Katha) – something new, the allies test the defences over the IJAAF bases in Burma. Only 3x Beauforts must have just been a probe.

The situation for 16th Army in the Northern Territory.
38th Div will have one go at trying to draw 1st Aus Div and 30th Bde into a battle at Daly Waters.
They will then withdraw so that they don't get surrounded by the Americal and the 5th Aus Div.
