Some of the surprises are purely to keep the player honest its too easy to go deep early v the AI - doing that in this scenario can be detrimental to your mental health.

Not sure which version Lowpe is playing but in the most recent version on one of my PC's below was one of the leaders of the Malaya Garrison.....a canny experienced and prudent campaigner...… - dedicated to Roger Neilson !!

It wouldn't let me put negative aggression !!

And their was no stat for bootlicking or bullying

Flashman, that is great Andy! I see Hornblower & H. Solo & J. Aubury!

It is too bad you can't see stuff like that when playing. Well, you can a bit in naval fights.

Is H.Solo a ship captain or an airgroup commander? That is the question.

I am doing an update to this scenario inspired by Lowpes AAR where I have spotted a few things

I am always looking for easter egg stuff in the ironman series so if you have any leader names, ships or pilots you want added let me know I will put a new thread in main forum to avoid contaminating Lowpe's AAR any further

The assault forces for Singapore. 9 Divisions. I bet forts are 6+, and despite having 100 prep, HQc and Command HQ prepped for the attack -- they all get shattered. I simply cannot bomb Singapore to slow fort building (maybe I could at night, but I haven't gone there). In the past I have sent battleships to bombard Singapore, but that usually results in very bad outcome for the bombardment fleet.

Fatigue is high from breaking the forward defense at Malacca and Johore Bahru. I doubt I can wait more than another day for it to come down...

My guess, is that Japan pretty much has to do a Mersing Gambit with almost everything they have on turn 1 or turn 2. Get into Singapore before forts are built (if in fact they don't exist at game start? Singapore starts damaged so there is time to hit it before the forts are enhanced). I think there was like 12 units in Singapore on day 1.

The problem with strategy is all the Tribal Class AA destroyer squadrons sent out from Singapore, and the large MTB squadron that appears at Mersing on Dec 8. It would take the entire KB, set to a range to avoid striking Singapore to support the invasion.

I think it is doable with foreknowledge. If CB Archimedes and Plato are with Task Force Z, then I doubt that it is possible.

If a division gets really shattered I will probably send it north to help garrison Thailand. But the bases are few and far between that are big enough to counter malaria and allow speedy rebuilding.

I suspect there will be some tears coming up.

So far you are taking a much different approach than I do; but you are also having some success that I rarely see. I usually lose far more ships to those d___ Dorniers, you've been relatively unscathed.

So, I am watching with great interest a good player and how you attack some of these "nuts". Andy created some real tough ones to crack …

nice trap
in addition to a good, aggressive commander, do you replace individual captains? or is it overshoot?

also, any specific reason for the ship composition? I normally avoid mixing slow and fast ships, and the 19knt SCs can be more useful escorting fast TFs

How about putting it in a mined base hex, possibly with some ASW TFs ready to move into interdiction hexes in case the sub is only damaged?

44 miles to Singapore....shock attack tomorrow by 9 Divisions plus Artillery. Right now I am waffling, do I let the 16AV Engineer units cross or not.

They are likely to be absolutely destroyed. However, they might help reduce the disruption from the crossing. Not sure on that, but it makes logical sense.

Leaders have been swapped and I went with the Prince for Southern Army Command. Division leaders picked for 70+ land, high admin, and lower aggression.

I don't believe I swapped him out yet. I go for high aggression first, and 2nd naval. I might include some high leadership guys, but pickings are really scarce when you include leadership with aggression and naval.

Ships are based on speed. I like to sandwich the target. I don't usually like using the 14 knot PB, their vp level and fuel consumption is so high and maneuver so low. But she is included here to cover a speed band.

The 3 point ASW PB are included to raise overall ASW numbers. Their maneuver is very low.

I would rather use the good SC hunting and killing subs, than protecting tankers. Momi class destroyers, DMS, and E boats with ASW are my preferred choices for tankers this early.

It is important to put the trap ASW TF (Tanker) in patrol mode.

SRA

KB and a Heavy SAG and lots of invasion capable ships at Balikpapen. The KB may go hunt the Texas around Luzon, or it might shepherd the invasions of Makassar, Denpassar, and Kendari. Not sure yet, awaiting recon results. Dinah are resting at Balikpapen and will start flying in a day.

First tanker convoy (2 dms, 1 tanker, 11600 capacity) is loading fuel at Balikpapen. Will run to Cam Ranh Bay for now. Miri oil is also going to Cam Ranh Bay in one tanker task force. Pretty much all tankers are in port awaiting the completion of the ASW patrols. One oil tanker feeding Hokkaido and another working out of Fusan. The Oiler fleet that supported the 5th Carrier Division strike on Pearl was re-routed day 1 to Saipan, and now has arrived at Kwaj in the Marshalls to feed the thirsty Iboats and fleets there.

All the bases I am interested in right now...lots of them.

Torpedo bombers fly from Laoag hunting the Texas and Swayback... 4 squadrons of Nells and Betties, 2 on Naval attack, 2 on very low percentage search. Kind of important here, as it means the KB won't have to deal with Texas.

Weather in hex: Light rain

Raid detected at 80 NM, estimated altitude 22,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 31 minutes

I thought that the three inch rockets were two inch sticks of cordite for rocket fuel with a solid three inch spear point. They were used to punch holes in the subs hull so it could not dive. The five inch rockets had the explosive warhead.

Think of the firestorm if a Corsair dropped a load of napalm on a Japanese ship . . .
