CHECKPOINT SYNDROME by Liran Ron Furer

In late 2003, a new book appeared in Tel-Aviv. This book: "Checkpoint Syndrome", was written by a young Israeli who had just finished his National Service in the Israeli army. After he was trained, he was sent to serve on the checkpoints. When he finished his service, and was back as a civilian, he looked back on his life as a soldier at the checkpoints, and he wrote a story about his military service.

Here is a review by the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz of the book: https://www.haaretz.com/1.4766243

The book itself is available online here: https://ifamericansknew.org/download/checkpoint_syndrome.pdf

I think when HG Wells put this story into a book version he moved too far away from Jeff Wayne's brilliant musical. I can't recall a single ULLA!!!!! in Wells' deeply disappointed written version

Well, he didn't have Sir Richard Burton. Or Elizabeth Taylor.

This is what I got as my "mystery surprise" selection this month.

Meh. I need to whittle my selections to get better stuff. Still reading it, maybe better the next few hundred pages.

Not sure why LoA will not publish Upton Sinclair in annotation, esp. Lanny Budd series.
Better luck next month, I guess.

“These Truths: A History of the United States.”
Single-volume histories of the United States are rare these days. Popular historians write tomes about great Americans, and professional historians write about the country’s myriad flaws. What is impressive about writer’s narrative is how effortlessly she weaves both strands into a single compelling narrative.

I'm now reading Hugh Bicheno's Blood Royal which picks up where his other book Battle Royal leaves off.

I had thought that I had a good general understanding of the War of the Roses before I started to read his books. Boy was I wrong! That is a good thing! Acute labor shortages allowed otherwise indentured peasants to become free and contracted labor. English common law allowed women some rights, most notably the right to inherit property. An age of mailed males working out anger management issues and whose singular skill was weaponry. Unscrupulous and larcenous nobles using the royal stations to feather their own nests. Cades rebellion, lollards, influential and wealthy merchants of the Staple and so much more!

George R.R. Martin's works are impressive, but the real life story is so much better.

With the "shut down" limiting my Uni Library access to "we don't know when you can look at our stacks or borrow any more books again, go away" (and thus, cutting deeply now into my usual monthly reading habits),

I have been striving to find something interesting via the intertubes, and came across this advice from philobiblos's blog:

"- Harvard invites crowdsourced transcription help for the recently-digitized Colonial North America collection. Get started here."

From that link,

https://fromthepage.com/harvardlibrary

I found myself in a VAST collection of images (of books and their pages) from the Colonial America time frame, which you can look at and help transcribe (if so inclined) or just look about.

It was fascinating. I started to look for notes etc. about Indian wars / interaction, found a Zoology section (which my Dad would have loved, he taught Biology for 40 years), and then found my way into a "Music" section. Aaaaaaas a classically trained musician (I can play about 8 instruments, but only the flute well) I thought, "Wow, I might be good at that part."

Lo and behold, I then spent an hour or two just studying a musical manuscript from 1715: a copy of a Portugese version of the classic Christmas hymn "Adeste Fidelis"

Absolutely fascinating.

Lack of access to the library and lack of income has led to a massive reread campaign. Just restarted Peter Higgins' rather wierd Wolfhound Century - not sure if its Steam Punk, SF or just suggesting that Stalin spent too long in his early years listening to Angels

I have been reading through 'Order in Chaos, The Memoirs of a General of Panzer Troops - Hermann Balck' the part i have found most interesting is the sheer chaos of the french campaign of 1940, the few chapters he has dedicated to it have been full of almost unfathomable happenings, like a french mayor jumping on a command Panzer to tell the crew to "watch out" for the germans are near.

I'm reading "The Battle of Britain" by Hough & Richards. About 65 pages in so far and it's ok... Len Deighton's "Fighters" and Alfred Price's "Hardest Day" seem to be better books... Is there a better more in-depth book on the Battle of Britain?

The Most Dangerous Enemy - Stephen Bungay I found to be a good read. The Battle of Britain - James Holland was okay too, although iirc he concentrated on a lot outside of the actual battle.

Stopping the Panzers; The Untold Story of D-Day by Marc Milner

I have been reading books on the Normandy campaign for almost 50 years. But it is rare to come across a book that significantly changes how you view the campaign (or maybe I am just getting old).

This book on the landings and early battles of the Third Canadian Division is well written and carefully researched. The standard narrative is that the Canadians, due to tactical inexperience, stalled on the drive west of Caen after the initial landings. This book convincingly argues that the Allies and Germans both realized early in the planning process that the most dangerous panzer attack country was to the west of Caen. The Canadians were expected to take up defensive positions, draw the panzers in and defeat them on June 7-9.

To do this, they were given anti tank and artillery support units well beyond other divisions in Normandy, took up positions largely in the designated area and defeated the panzer attack the Germans were counting on to drive the Allies back into the sea.

A most rewarding surprise read.

That's an intriguing observation, Bennett. I may have to add that to my list.
