I am now in September 44 playing the Allies in a PBEM game. I was able to stop the Germans in Russia, they never took Rostov or Moscow, but were able to get to Leningrad. Breakthroughs and mobile warfare are very hard. Airpower is almost completely inefficient. Most of the time the frontlines are static and even if you can attack a hex from 3 sides it is very hard to dislodge the defenders when they are dug in. It is very much like WW1 trench warfare. I am doing a strategic air campaign against Germany with up to 5 strat bombers and I have no idea if it hurts or not. Another thing is the readiness of airunits. It never recovers once it is down, even if you let them rest for several turns.

How could this game get better?
- add some teeth to the air force when it comes to ground attacks. Operation COBRA succeeded thanks to massive bombardments, which basically destroyed the Panzer Lehr division by air power alone.
- give attacker benefits for multi side hex attacks

This has not been my experience at all.

Not sure I could say more without seeing screenshots of your campaign or reading a mini-AAR, but something must be off in the use of your forces.

I can understand the WWI comment being 1944 and all - things can become static. At the same time, playing another game with a different approach should likely yield different results.

I assume everyone's experiences can vary wildly. And, I would hope so, as this would attest to a dynamic game, which while it may not necessarily represent any one person's historical expectations, it at least indicates a wider possibility of outcomes.

In other words, it's pretty hard to judge a game's reality based upon one play experience. Probably too small sample size to say either way.

Hmmm, only my first game and only reached May 1940, but blitzkrieg in France is certainly not WW1!

This annoyed me too as huge images had worked for me before in other matrix games. If you use Windows paint, press 'crop', drag over the bit you want to keep and then press crop again. You will be left with the bit in your rectangle.

The frontlines in Russia late in the war will not become completely static if you use waves of attack at critical points, to achieve breakthroughs and followups. Hit the target area with strong infantry, exchange places with followup armor, hit the same area of the line again with the many armored action points allowing multiple attacks, and have other armor ready to push through any holes made in the line.

It requires some planning a month or more ahead of time, just as it did historically. The offensives are limited in scope and objective, as historically.

Air power helps to soften that line up at the critical point, but it alone is not decisive.
