OK, found a little more info. In my notes for WITP-AE is this:

I suspect mod simply overlooked sub transport...I remember keeping notes on some Japanese planes that simply couldn't be used at all (pdu off).

What was your prep for the Marcus Invasion?

I have come to the conclusion that DL levels are super important for carrier battles, and this is an area that is difficult for good DL from multiple sources (flying boats, runway planes) because of the ranges.

I push the panic button once Wake falls, and it is hard to see how Marcus has such a weak force defending it, and forts only 4. A small armor unit, an art unit, and an AA unit and you might have been repulsed. If you get Marcus, then moving to Guam, Jima, Hokkaido or Kuriles is all possible or even misdirection here while you move on SRA.

Do you know what type of fighter is on the KB?

In our prior game I am pretty sure it was possible, because I recall in this game being surprised to see that the icon for the commando units was just normal infantry.

What was your prep for the Marcus Invasion?
100%, both units have good CO's, both are good units but not with great experience due to limited ground combat in this game so far. I was surprised by the depth of the AV adjustment; they got knocked down to like 10% of what was left after casualties.

I have come to the conclusion that DL levels are super important for carrier battles, and this is an area that is difficult for good DL from multiple sources (flying boats, runway planes) because of the ranges.
I was really surprised there seemed to be no search from Marcus. Extended Recon didn't show it either.

I have some units preparing/prepared for Iwo Jima, not sure if enough but it's possible. Most units are prepared for the Marianas and some key units for Truk. Pagan will be first in the Marianas.

Do you know what type of fighter is on the KB?

So, this is the end of 1943. April 44 is the earliest for the Sam if you go all out for it.

I am starting to wonder about the viability of r&d the A6M8. Its stats are eerily like the A6M5 except worse range, but better guns (slightly) and armor. Most JFB's really dislike the A6M8.

But the plane is easily accelerated forward by going Rufe, 5 line, 8 so you could start r&d it in March of 1942. 10 factories plus bonus, is 20 points a day you could easily get the plane in early 43 late 42 at which point those factories could then be re-allocated to the Sam or other late war fighter. This time frame is usually when the Allies start to get frisky with their carriers.

It would change the dynamic of an air clash to be a close in knife fight if the KB was fully kitted out. You could break down escort duty for the longer legged 5, and keep the 8 for CV CAP and not change the distance.

If I assign the Sam as the most important plane to r&d early (and I do), then the Frank and George, the M8 might very well follow, not because it is a good plane, but because it is the best Japan can field during a critical part of the war despite its shorter range.

OK, found a little more info. In my notes for WITP-AE is this:

In the database I have found that NONE of the units have symbol 19. This is DBB-28C, so I guess the question is: was that done deliberately or accidentally?

I tried to load a company-sized Australian commando unit onto the SST and could not do it. I figured I must have remembered wrong so I tried a para unit instead, and also could not do it. If the scenario data is wrong maybe I can see about (when I have time) generating a fix to roll back upstream. I've made note of a few misc errors with various ships and units too.

In addition, I cannot get British infantry squads to upgrade to '43 no matter what. Maybe a data bug too.

Was the para unit just named "Parachute (unit type)", or did it have the Inf(p) designation? There are a lot of para units that are not really para units in the game.

INVADED

Overall

• No direct carrier Intel; sub DL's suggest enemy carriers just west of the Marianas Islands.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

Pacific

• The fleet is now 7 hexes SE of Marcus Island and is not spotted.

• Enemy bombers are putting some hurt on our troops ashore at Marcus, so the fleet will move back there tomorrow to stop that. Some dedicated ASW groups are on scene now and more are on the way. I also suspect the Empire is flying in another unit to bolster the defense.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina

• Limited sweeps of Cox's Bazar came in and scored against our defenders while our best groups were ordered to sweep Chiang Mai. Weather kept our sweepers and bombers from their mission, and likely stymied further enemy sweeps. We will leave orders in place for tomorrow.

• Ground bombardment of our defenders near Mandalay ceased and it looks as though there are fewer armored vehicles there.

• Some ASW groups will switch to surface group duty until more cruisers arrive on scene. The troops ashore improved markedly with just one day of peace from the skies. Disruption & Fatigue stand at 39 & 28 and 51 & 42 for the two Rgts, perhaps two or three more days before the next assault. By then we will have all three OBB TF's back on station to bombard. And quite possibly a carrier battle will have resolved itself. The fast carriers will move 1 hex east.

• Our search planes might help curb the IJN's enthusiasm.

1943 November 08

A wild day in the air, with them sweeping us, us sweeping them (but not doing too well), and carrier CAP over Marcus Island taking a toll of transports.

• The Claxton group will head for Wake, where 3 of them will then head for Pearl. The heavy cruiser group heading back to Wake will release the 4 damaged destroyers and take 4 shiny new Fletchers as replacements. Another heavy cruiser group is on station at Marcus now, a second one will join tomorrow. A CL group will join the fast carriers tomorrow.

• The two Rgts Disruption & Fatigue are 16 & 24 and 27 and 36. I figure the day after tomorrow will be good for an assault. Tomorrow the Arizona OBB group will bombard; the day of the assault the other two OBB groups will both bombard.

Our sweeps and strikes of Rangoon turned out well, but in the sync bug version our Corsairs received rough handling.

• Our fleet is well spotted and the weather was good enough, so either the Empire did not order a strike, or our heavy fighter presence deterred one. The battle fleet will shift to 1 hex SE of Marcus Island tomorrow. Two more heavy cruiser TF's will leave Wake tomorrow, and the first OBB TF will arrive there to rearm. The other two will arrive the day after. This means the LCU's will have ample time to rest for the next assault.

They shot down 22 of our planes on search, we shot down 62 of theirs on search.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

• Assault at Finschhafen tomorrow. Darwin has full supply! The larger convoy will arrive tomorrow, and two tankers are on the way.

So, I guess the weather (thunderstorms) or range stopped the 8 hex attack?

I don't like using the CS for naval search as much as I like it for low CAP with Rufe and Rex.

I can't be sure. Without doing a tally, I believe I have a ton of fighters on scene, so maybe it was that.

Or, it could be that he was anticipating my fleet to strike forward, including with surface combat TF's like I did in the last series of major carrier engagements. With at least 3 of his TF's likely set to surface combat, he could have intercepted those thrusts and them hit them with carrier air. My own carriers might have been too far back to provide really effective CAP.

I just don't know.

He is letting your fighter pilots become aces shooting down slow low search planes and making you over confident.

INVADED
Invested: Taung Gyi, Marcus Island.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• Enemy carriers are 6 hexes due west of Marcus Island. CV Kaga is listed as sunk today.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

Pacific

• We got half payback against their air groups, and took some hits on CVE's only, which it seems they might have targeted deliberately (range to our CVE's = 6, range to our battle fleet = 7).
