I'm now reading Hugh Bicheno's Blood Royal which picks up where his other book Battle Royal leaves off. I had thought that I had a good general understanding of the War of the Roses before I started to read his books. Boy was I wrong! That is a good thing! Acute labor shortages allowed otherwise indentured peasants to become free and contracted labor. English common law allowed women some rights, most notably the right to inherit property. An age of mailed males working out anger management issues and whose singular skill was weaponry. Unscrupulous and larcenous nobles using the royal stations to feather their own nests. Cades rebellion, lollards, influential and wealthy merchants of the Staple and so much more! George R.R. Martin's works are impressive, but the real life story is so much better.
