More action around Port Moresby. Desperate IJN air strikes from all available land based aircraft, plus the air groups of Hiryu and Shokaku flying at range 7 from the Bismarck Sea, break through USN LRCAP over the beaches and get some hits on the amphibious task force. USS Washington is sunk! Another long report, with what must be a very large part of the USN identified in the Coral Sea. The Port Moresby defenders need to buy a few more days to give CV Kaga a chance to get away from Rabaul. 32nd Infantry Division 24th Infantry Division 34th Combat Engineer Regiment The IJN has 4x BB and 12x CA in surface combat task forces at Rabaul plus the 2x serviceable CV with 2x Kongos as escort. If the IJN had more fresh land based fighter units to provide LRCAP it would be tempting to try and rush forward to try and sink the allied carriers. The allied surface combat task forces should all be low on ammunition from bombarding Port Moresby. But the allied carrier air groups are relatively fresh. I think I need to wait and see if the allied carriers withdraw, and keep the IJN BBs and CAs at Rabaul for now. It would be tempting to send them out hunting if the allies venture into the Solomon Sea, but I don’t think there are enough Zeroes left to cover their movement all the way to Port Moresby… If the allies withdraw to pickup a follow up task force the IJN Battle Force might have a very small window of opportunity to get a bombardment in to disrupt the beachhead. There are a number of other Betty and Nell units stationed in Southern Fleet and 4th Fleet areas that will move towards Rabaul so that they are available for additional torpedo attacks in the next few days, to allow SEAF strike units to re-group and replenish. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground combat at 79,47 (near Patung) Japanese Deliberate attack Attacking force 14765 troops, 126 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 482 Defending force 29350 troops, 57 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 611 Japanese adjusted assault: 223 Allied adjusted defense: 448 Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 Combat modifiers Defender: terrain(+), morale(-), experience(-), supply(-) Attacker: Japanese ground losses: 355 casualties reported Squads: 0 destroyed, 39 disabled Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled Engineers: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled Allied ground losses: 630 casualties reported Squads: 2 destroyed, 59 disabled Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 25 disabled Assaulting units: 13th Division 59th/B Division Defending units: 59th Chinese Corps 73rd Chinese Corps 8th Chinese Corps 18th Chinese Corps 78th Chinese Corps 33rd Group Army 9th Prov Chinese Corps -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground combat at Changsha (82,52) Japanese Bombardment attack Attacking force 5838 troops, 38 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1347 Defending force 72813 troops, 257 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2581 Japanese ground losses: 7 casualties reported Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled Allied ground losses: 9 casualties reported Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground combat at Chuhsien (88,56) Japanese Deliberate attack Attacking force 11964 troops, 104 guns, 43 vehicles, Assault Value = 416 Defending force 20325 troops, 87 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 628 Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 0 – great work by the engineers. 22nd Div will keep attacking whenever fatigue and disruption are low.
