Status: offline 		I wonder if Japan had 60 Rex's flying CAP if that would have been enough to avoid all CV hits in your strike a few days ago.

If so, I wonder if a prudent JFB counter in late 43 might not be to beef up Japan's CAP, absorb the first strike and then look to strike at the Allied kitchen sink?

It is easier to defend, than coordinate a strike.

Probably won't work though...but probably merits further investigation. I know a lot of AFB's structure their carrier flight strength heavily defensive...in which case you have to carrier strike fleets geared defensively...

• Now Kaga is "Falsely reported sunk", but we have a >400 VP gain. Kaga is a tough ol' bird, but there are ground losses today of 29x B6N2 Jill and 29x D4Y1 Judy, which I reckon is a good sign.

• An air transport convoy with 4 squadrons of Hellcats, 136 in all, is leaving Pearl Harbor for Roi-Namur, from where the carriers can take them in transfer with only a small diversion to the south.

• The presumed demise of Kaga has removed almost 60 Imperial strike aircraft from the area. All three OBB TF's will be in range to bombard Marcus the day after tomorrow. Oilers are heading toward the fleet to refuel the thirsty combatants.

Status: offline 		Congratulations are in order for the air ground losses. There has to be a way for Japan to do better in late 43 clashes. Japan could have gone into the fight with 48 Rex's boosting local CAP. Other than that it comes down to settings, task force composition and leader selections.

As always I come down to a few mechanics that still prove elusive after all these years:

Defensively how do you minimize this:

Time for all group planes to reach interception is 38 minutes


Does a lower altitude interception work? How about faster planes (max or cruise)? Better climb rates? Higher percentage on CAP? 0-1 Range CAP? Leaders? Fatigue?

How do you maximize this:

Raid detected at 80 NM, estimated altitude 15,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 26 minutes


Does extra task forces in the target hex help? Radar obviously? How about leaders? Does CAP do anything? How about CAP with air radars? How about searching planes? Are bigger TF better?

and Finally:

How to get the most from your AA guns and encourage attacks on battleships instead of carriers. Can't tell if Japan had the two CLAA's there or not.

Finally, would the A6M8 make a difference?

So, tomorrow all three OBB TF's will bombard. one TB group will bomb, and the ground units will assault on Marcus Island. One Rgt has recovered all devices (not at 100% TOE but all there are now enabled) and the other has recovered many more than available for assaults after the landing.

How will the assault go? Will Marcus fall?

• It will be most of a week before the battleships recycle to be back on station, and by then both Rgts will be pretty well recovered. I'm thinking the situation might be right to do the next assault over two days as a rolling assault. The stronger Rgt will attack on the first day and the weaker Rgt on the second day.

• Refueling of the battle fleet has commenced and will continue tomorrow, the escort carriers, et al at Marcus Island likely the day after.

• The 160th Infantry Regiment took a lot of casualties and will need to recover, but our casualties overall were only a little higher than earlier assaults by both regiments. IJ casualties were lower than the prior two assaults, but now we have fortifications reduced to level 1. Tomorrow the 160th will rest while the 21st attacks and we'll see if sustained disruption from today's combat affects the defenders' performance enough to sway the battle.

• It worked! Tiny casualties for our assaulting force. The base is wrecked of course, and mined. Supporting and occupying forces are on the way from their holding area and from Wake Island: mine sweepers, an AV, base force, Marine Defense Bn, USA Inf Bn. PBY's have moved in but most need repairs after rough landings. A small bonus, it looks like we captured a few thousand tons of supply on Marcus. Two of the fast carrier task forces will head southeast a bit to get in range of Hellcat squadrons now on Roi-Namur, 136 fighters in all.

• Landing at Milne Bay tomorrow, but really just to disqualify it as a destination of retreat. The troops are only partially prepared so they might suffer in the landing.

Do you have some long legged patrol planes to fly out of there? What always scares me is some high dl on Tokyo and her neighbors after Marcus falls. You can check out Japan's plane r&d a bit, and then of course dl on all the shipping coming into and out of the area...

For me, as Japan, it is serious panic time when Marcus falls in 1943...although I expect it in a scenario 1 style game. Japan needs to buy 4 months of delay to start getting serious reinforcements to protect Honshu for an early bombing campaign.

Of course if Japan has neglected the Jima's you might be able to leap frog very fast...

I have those two 4E seaplane squadrons running out of Ponape and I will move them after I get things settled down. The PBY Sqn I put in Marcus was 12 planes ready, and upon transfer 1 was lost and 7 were damaged, so I need to wait or those 4E beasties will be repairing forever.

Marcus is only airfield size 1 (in this game Walter is being very studious about not building bases for me), so I doubt the PBY-1P (the photo recon land-based 4E) will operate, but I have 3 of those B-25 variants that are so long legged. I'll have to check and see if they can reach Tokyo.

I do have forces ready for Iwo Jima, but I'm skeptical I'll be able to jump in there very fast. And based on your recommendations for defenses at a place like Marcus Island, maybe I got lucky there and who knows if I have enough prepared for Iwo Jima?

Will Iwo Jima trigger kamikazes?
