Summary results from the follow up on 4 Dec.
All 4x USN CVs were still afloat. RADM Tanaka puts 3 under while the 4th goes down via IJN air strike.
USN aircraft had diverted to Lunga. They launch a counter strike that is dealt with by A6M5s, but then a number of small unescorted Val strikes get shredded in return.
It will take a while to recover the IJN DB capability, but this should slow the allies down until about mid-1943.
They still have a lot of Cruisers and Destroyers though...

Just received this with the turn:

Scene: ~Admiral Halsey, bloodied & battered, wearing a life vest, floating in the debris filled sea next to his equally abused chief of staff.~
Halsey: "Whose bright idea was it to call this Operation Hubris?!?!"

Jdsrae congratulations on a well played carrier vs carrier battle. Looks like you managed your forces very well.

It's hard for me to tell from the combat report, did you have all your carriers in one TF?

It certainly went better than when I lost Akagi and nearly lost Kaga a few months back.

On day 1:
RADM Yamaguchi had 6CV 3CVL to start the battle.
RADM Kakuto had the 3CVE in a separate TF.
I probably should have put a slow BB or two in the CVE task force as that might have soaked up some bombs and torps better than the CVEs can.

On day 2:
RADM Kakuto took the damaged CV and the two burning CVEs and moved north out of the battle.
RADM Yamaguchi had 5CV 3CVL in the pursuit.

Hey jdsrae, thanks. I thought there was some kind of penalty if you had too many carriers together. I was only putting a max of 4 large ones together.

Re the BBs, i really messed up there too. I didn't have any BBs with my CV TFs when the big battle happened. Luckily i didn't receive any torps.

Haven’t had time to check the manual but I think it’s mentioned in there.
I’ve taken it as being a higher chance of uncoordinated strikes, not a blanket penalty.
It also impacts the allies more early war than the IJN.
If the PH raid had 6x CVs in the one TF, what’s +3 CVL between enemies?!

3.46:1

I am at least 5k short of auto victory, so quite a long way off really.
It won't happen on 1 Jan 43.
Still possible by mid 1943.

After those plans went better than expected, the vibe at IGHQ is a bit like these guys!

Well the U. S. Navy has sure had its ears pinned back.

Think its time to reestablish your dominance in the southern Solomons?

The initiative has swung back to Japan in SEAF but i know it won’t last beyond mid 1943.

That’s one operation on the agenda for the next weekly IGHQ Joint Planning Conference.
Naval blockade of PNG and the lower Solomons, establish local air supremacy, with a view to counter landings in 3-4 months time.

Well the U.

Right, but its Dec '42.

BTW, what's in your pipeline for aircraft production?

I see your flying the Tojo IIa, should have the IIc by 1/43. Followed by the first George come March/April. Then by June/July the first Frank, and that's without 'skipping' models in the R&D research. These planes can fight on 'par' with Allied aircraft of the time frame.

I’ve got a bit of time this evening so might use that to check and summarise aircraft production.

From memory, Tojo IIc started production on 1 Dec so the first Sentai will upgrade to it shortly.
D4Y1 is the next to finish research, Jan 43, with A6M5c looking good for Feb 43.
Still only 1 of 8x George factories researching but the others are 19-29 repaired. Mar/Apr will be about right.
12x Frank factories with the best in the 20s repaired.
I could really do with the George and Frank now as the allies have started bombing again in Burma and PNG.

Groups at Manus have transferred planes – first time I’ve seen this message. Educated guess is that it is from the transfer ashore of IJN air unit remnants from the damaged CVEs.
KB arrives at Manus Island to refuel and take replacement aircraft and pilots. Manus port is still size 6 and the AKEs were moved north to avoid allied bombers, so the KB now needs to move to Rabaul to replenish sorties.
