Hello. I was curious about the cratered terrain you sometimes see on the map. The game manual states that any entrenched position that has been shelled will display some shell craters. But do they have a game function? I was wondering if maybe they impose an movement penalty or are just there to lend that grim WW I ambiance.

I don’t have the manual handy right now so I can’t see what it says, but I know what it ought to do: shelling during WW1 famously led to the ground becoming so torn up that it became difficult to advance. Shelled terrain should cost at least an additional AP to cross, and give a defensive bonus. And if we were really going to go all out with the realism then it would persist for longer than just a turn, since e.g., the 1916 Somme battlefield was still a ruin in 1918 and the Germans wished to avoid fighting there - of course I understand that this is not a simulator and there are things the game won’t model.

It is my understanding that they are there for decoration / information. They mark the location of a "battle" that turn. So a quick visual representation that some boom happened here this turn.

I havent noticed a change in movement points, but I am not 100% certain on that item.

They are purely there to add atmosphere and show that a battle has raged there.

If we had added extra movement penalties then combined with enemy Zone of Control it could have impeded movement a bit too much.
