They will also add their AV to the Manchukuo garrison which might help buy out another front line Division quicker without inviting the Soviets into the war.

Seems like KBs movement was undetected by allied sigint too!

You are getting into the realm when such forays become dangerous, unless you are sure you have total CV superiority. Trans-versing seas that are not scouted in advance by friendly forces may become hazardous to the KB. Don't forget 'victors disease'. And for what:

Have you tried adjusting the 'priority' yet?


Yep played with a few toggles.
I’ve read Alfred’s ship repair 101 a few times, but the last time was months ago...

My observations from the last few turns follow.
Priority wasn't really helping Hyuga as there were very few other ships under repair.
Now that there are 3x CA and more DDs in the same shipyard changing Hyuga from normal to critical saves 8 days.
Once placed in the shipyard, full repairs would now take 120 days at normal, 77 at high and 78 at critical. It was 79 a few days ago at normal, before more CAs and DDs arrived for upgrades.
All the CAs and DDs will be back in service by the time Hyuga needs to go into the shipyard, so might not make any difference to be set at high priority by then, but it will probably still need another 2 months to repair after all minor damage is fixed.

High priority is worth it compared to normal priority now that there are other ships in the yard, but it is also important to get other ships out of the same repair yard asap so the workers can focus their effort on one big ship. Eg: as soon as ships start upgrades I change them to pierside mode, but it may have been better to move those CAs and DDs somewhere else.

I just toggled the CAs and they will generally complete their repairs quicker in the shipyard rather than pierside.

I’m not that fussed with perfecting this as there are so many DDs upgrading that all but Kaga and Hyuga will be repaired before their DD escorts are ready anyway.

Major damage on CVs and BBs just takes a long time to repair. That’s not all bad, as they aren’t burning fuel while they’re in the shipyard.






BTW Lokasenna, did a thread on how to 'manipulate' the process to get the repairs done earlier. I objected to such 'tactics', until he stated what was involved, too much time and effort for a few days shorter repair.

But if you are interested I could attempt to find the thread.

There are only 2 USN CVs on the map so this was a calculated risk.

One of the main aims of this was to scare off resupply convoys that I know must be moving towards Port Moresby and Guadalcanal.

Even though I didn’t find any valuable convoys, it did shock the allied commander and he now knows his search patterns are unreliable.
He might over compensate now with more search assets.
I’d much rather more of his B17s and B24s are used for naval search than flattening airfields.

KB and cruisers will now head north to clear the NE Queensland coast where I’ve spotted some cargo convoys lining up to make a run into Port Moresby.

Nicks do well at disrupting the bombers, but a total of 9 were shot down today by 4E bomber defensive fire and another 10 Nicks were written off from battle damage… An expensive day in terms of aircraft losses, but only a few pilots KIA with a few more WIA.
Pilots are generally in the high 60s experience to 70s, with 70+ air skill, but maybe they need to be 75+ experience to be more effective on night fighting duty, or at least stop themselves from being shot down as often.

Status: offline 		Final preparations are under way for the Battle of Dimapur.

Currently the IJA have 4800 AV with Army HQ, 2x Corps HQ, 2x Tank Divs, 8x Infantry Divs, 3x Tank Regts and some arty in hex. HQ Southern Army is also 100% prepared and in range.

The allies have about 1500 AV with half of that the Chinese 5th Corps, 1x Indian Div, 7th Armd Bde plus atts.
I’m hoping that the IJA medium tanks deal with the allied tanks, then the Chinese Corps crumbles quickly, but it will have been boosted by US arty and AT guns.

It’s going to be bloody due to the jungle terrain and potential forts, but I’m aware that the British, Indian and Australian pools of squads and devices is relatively shallow.
I feel that I will need to keep up the pressure with deliberate attacks about once a fortnight, as supply allows, for the next 3-4 months.

There are more IJA HQs and Divs moving to reinforce from China, but instead of waiting for them all to arrive they will be fed into the front to reinforce any successes or help tip the balance once I start getting a feel for the comparative AV and firepower in each hex.

I’ll have to draw a picture for myself before I confirm the last few details, but I’ll support a massed frontal attack on Dimapur with a few Divisions to support by moving into the jungle hex one to the west. I’m thinking that hex might become the main effort for reinforcements if the Dimapur jungle fortress proves too tough to clear.

Status: offline 		Movement arrows are popping up on allied units in Bengal, most likely moving to reinforce Dimapur.
That’s not all bad news, as 25th Army will soon be able to advance against what will be a reduced defensive force at Comilla on the IJA left flank.

A Mavis unit operating from Port Blair and conducting long range recon of Ceylon and the Madras-Cocanada coast is showing Ceylon only lightly defended.
If I had 3 spare Divs and a Corps HQ I’d move KB over to support and capture Ceylon, but I’d need to withdraw 25th Army to achieve that.
There are no uncommitted IJA Divs that can move by ship, but a reserve is starting to form in Thailand/Malaya based around the 20s and 30s Divs.
The limiting factor is having enough PP to buy them out for use as expeditionary forces.

On the other side of the map, a Dinah-III unit operating from Lae recently lit up Cairns and Townsville thanks to the 18 hex standard range, showing dozens of allied ships in port under 50-100 fighters each. Lots of freighters and smaller escort ships up to DD size. Probably mostly AM and similar escorts.

A task force of 8x allied APD was just engaged by IJN subs with one APD torpedoed and assumed sunk. It was either an attempted CAP trap or they are on their way to Port Moresby.

The allies still have lots of dangerous CA/CL/DD task forces so the IJN need to be careful not to be overwhelmed at a spot of the allies choosing.
Allied subs are also everywhere around PNG, which is a major consideration in IJN risk assessments when planning CL and above task force movements.

That’s 12.5 days to accelerate 1 month, so production should start in early March. I think I’ll change the 1x30 Kate factory to build the B6N2 and pay the 30k supply to repair it again, as that will leave all 4x30 Jill research factories to research the B6N2a
Aircraft D4Y4 Judy advances R&D – to 12/44 and closing at 8% per day, so production to start in about Jul/Aug 1943. The D4Y4 Judy will then be the carrier DB until the Grace arrives. 4x30 research factories are on the Grace currently repaired to 15, 14, 14, 10. The standard Grace arrival date is 12/44, so the D4Y4 will probably see about 6 months of front line carrier service before being moved to the land based units.

Question for the IJNAF Admirals on the War Council: What size bomb does the B7A2 Grace carry when it is flying normal combat radius dive bombing missions?

A spot of inter-web research says the internal bomb bay can carry 2x250kg bombs, but also that the Grace can carry 1x800kg torpedo or up to 800kg of general ordnance.
Other interesting bits that I just learnt (or re-learnt as I can’t remember reading this before!), only the Taiho and Shinano were capable of operating the B7A2 due to the modern arresting gear required to catch them. All carrier based DB and TB units in game can upgrade to the Grace, so for role-playing purposes I’ll assume that the next round of CV and CVL upgrades include enlarging the elevators and fitting arrestor gear. Only 114x B7A2 Grace were built, with the prototype in May 1942 and production from May 1944. 80x Grace were completed before a severe earthquake destroyed the factory in May 1945. That factory would have only been about a size 7 in WITPAE terms, but imagine the player outrage if aircraft factory destroying earthquakes were included in WITPAE! Same goes for ship sinking Typhoons/Cyclones as well.

Not sure if the Grace may carry the 800Kg or not, but I do believe that ability to carry said ordnance is dependent on a units' experience and 'die rolls'. That's how its determined with other A/C that may carry the beast.

Aircraft N1K1-J George advances R&D – to 7/43. Research factories are currently 30, 30, 30, 30 29, 28, 28, 22. With engine bonus it is currently advancing at 8% per day but that will soon be 14% per day. The last size 22 factory will probably take another few weeks to repair to size 30. N1K1 production should start in March. I am really looking forward to seeing how the George performs, but as soon as the allies see it they might try to avoid it.
I have 2x60 A6M2 factories in mothballs that could be changed to N1K1, but up until now I was planning to leave them to eventually upgrade for free to the A6M8 through the Sen Baku. That is so far away from happening that I might pay 120k supply to change them to 2x60 N1K1 and get them contributing to the war effort without further delay. That would let me advance all 8x George research factories to the N1K2 to get it quicker.
N1K2 is due 11/44, but advancing 1 month every 6.25 days, it should start production in about 6/43.
N1K5 is due 10/45, so once the N1K2 is available it will have 28 months available for research. My estimate is just under 5 months so it should enter production about 11/43. That is if the engine bonus is still available by then.

Cheers rusty, I'm assuming it will be the same as the Kate in that with a bit of luck it will carry them sometimes.
But if Grace does always carry the 800kg bomb like the D4Y4, it would allow the D4Y4 to be phased out completely.
I'll find out for sure in a year or so when Grace arrives!

The N1K5 uses a different engine than the first two models. The Ha-43 IIRC. You need 500 of those for the engine bonus, and its a late development.

Good point, I have it in one of my dodgy spreadsheets.

Ha-43 has 3x30 factories at the moment and my estimate is the engine should start production in 11/43.
The Aichi Ha-60 factory is now in mothballs so it will then change to the Ha-43 and all 4 will increase size to produce 120/month each.
That means there will be >500 engines in the pool some time in 1/44, so the engine bonus won't kick in until then.

So for all of 1943 the N1K5 will advance at 8% per day before doubling once the engine bonus starts.
That gives me a revised estimate for N1K5 to enter production of about Mar 44.
