Allied Ships � very interesting, this task force appears in the Coral Sea, but it is reportedly moving back towards the coast at the end of the day, so it might just be trying to tempt the IJN to come after it as bait. The main body of KB is at Truk right now undergoing readiness repairs and conserving fuel. Once the IJN CVs are ready they will come back to the Coral Sea to try and sink some more allied Cruisers without getting too tangled up with allied land based air.

This is the victory points worm for 1 Feb 1943.
Still bouncing along at a bit under 3.5:1, not really getting any closer to 4:1.

Reports to follow, but the orders for 4 Feb 43 will see action aplenty.

At Dimapur, the IJA force has full supply so the second attack will go in tomorrow.

In the Coral Sea, multiple task forces of xAK, xAP, CA and DDs are spotted moving towards Port Moresby.
P-38s have moved back to PM to try and provide CAP.
A large land based air operation is ordered with Nell, Betty, Val and escorting Zeroes to launch strikes from Lae, Milne Bay, Rabaul and Shortlands.
Mavis/Emily patrols will search from Manus and Rabaul.
IJAAF will contribute sweeps of PM to try and drag the P-38s up to 20k� and destroy a few, plus provide defensive CAP over the friendly air bases.
The IJN CV, BB, CA and CL task forces won�t be charging forward just yet, but they are forming up in the background.

A busy turn with mixed results.

Dimapur was captured with a 4:1 result, pushing the defenders back into clear terrain.

Some damage was caused by the IJNAF in SEAF but not enough to stop whatever the allies are doing at Port Moresby.
The allied unit count at PM seemed to drop from 16 down to 14 - surely they aren�t withdrawing?!
Allied AA was fierce and the P-38s did well against the first raid, but didn�t fly after that.
2x old USN CLs were hit by 3x250kg Val bombs each, left on fire but not heavily damaged...
40 Betties smashed a Dutch xAKL task force... multiple torpedoes into 1 point freighters
A lot more Nells / Betties should strike tomorrow, 150ish depending on weather and other die roles.

Another busy and fun turn, with decent results.

Recon by fighter sweeps in Bengal shot down 20+ Warhawks that we�re set to ranged CAP for no loss.

IJNAF strikes launched again in SEAF but many failed to locate targets.
Some LRCAP from Queensland bases made them pay a price, but they pressed home and hits were landed.
- HMAS Canberra took 2x torpedoes and is showing as heavily damaged. The last raid of the day missed her so she might survive.
- HMAS Australia put up effective AA fire and dodged all torpedoes.
- USS Concord took about 7x 250kg bombs from Vals, heavily damaged and heavy fires. 2x SOC-1 Seagulls destroyed on the ground so I think she�s a goner.
- a few smaller boats were obliterated
- 1 xAP was sunk with troops on board, so it does look like the allies are withdrawing at least part of their New Guinea Force.

The turn ended with CV Hiryu dodging sub launched torpedoes just near Lae!

HQ 18th Army with 4x Divisions just arrived in the Port Moresby hex and will dig in.
The IJN Combined Fleet will move forward from Truk and Manus to support.

That is the challenge, keeping the pressure on while trying not to lose too many points while doing it!
I still need to try and win a bit over 3:1 points per month for the next 10 months to keep a bit of a buffer. 1944 is a loooong way off!

The plan remains to try and get points in Bengal through the land and air war, and in SEAF through the recapture of Port Moresby.
Capturing Dimapur recently was a big step forward, but I am keeping the IJA in the jungle to avoid being smashed by allied bombers, so movement is slow.
Sweeping non-base hexes over enemy troops is proving a good tactic, but I expect the allies to shrink the range on their CAP back to 0 to counter this.
The allied heavy bombers could flatten an IJAAF Base of their choosing any day again now, so I need to spread out the IJAAF and keep some aircraft on defensive CAP.

There is an opportunity to destroy 1-2x USArmy Divs at Port Moresby, and 2x USMC Divs at Guadalcanal/Tulagi.
If Port Moresby isn't retaken in the next few months the opportunity to get back into the lower Solomons will probably evaporate, as this is the Year of the Essex/Hellcat.
I need to keep the IJN Combined Fleet in SEAF to support those land operations, but there are allied subs everywhere, so the risk of losing CVs to subs is high.

Here is the damage caused to CA Atago last turn by a USN Mk14 torpedo. I was expecting a lot worse, maybe this was just lucky the damage was so low!

At this stage I'd honestly throw every pilot with 81+ EXP into TRACOM. The Tojo is an okay plane, but pilots of that calibre belong in the likes of Franks or better.

There's also the side benefit of what it will do to your training regime in the meantime. I'm pulling pilots out of the replacement pool at around mid-40s EXP to start their training regime, which cuts a lot of time off the process of building usable EXP levels (which is much harder to build than skills).

I think it also helps to be very specific about what squadrons use what planes, and in what roles.

81+ EXP pilots go to TRACOM
70-80 EXP pilots go to squadrons with the best airframes, in a sweeping role if possible.
60-70 EXP pilots get the defensive frontline CAP/escort duties in your current standard fighter
50-60 EXP pilots just out of training get rear-area CAP to build EXP

It is quite labour intensive to reorganise the pilots and squadrons every so often, but worthwhile as the cream really does rise to the top, and fairly quickly too.

The real gains in my view aren't in the number of 81+ EXP pilots you'll generate, but the number of pilots in the 70-80s range that just kind of stick around but never get lucky enough to break the 81 EXP barrier. There's a massive difference between having 10 squadrons with 60 EXP pilots and 10 squadrons with 70 EXP pilots.

That's been a fairly fringe benefit in my experience. From my own games (and, as far as I've seen, every late-war Japan game that's had an AAR), supply vanishes long before HI becomes an issue. Pushing them through training faster is always good however.

I�m noticing a big performance difference in the 80s pilots over the 70s, but acknowledge that keeping those veterans flying is taking up a slot that a 70s pilot could use.
The turn just came back so I�ll run it, but will try to post a few more details later, then happy to take further advice from the Air Staff, Pilot Training Branch!
Rainy spring day here, so if I spin a quick turn now I should get another one back to do this evening.

I think that viewing it as "taking a slot" is a good way to look at it, at least in terms of experience gain.

Given also that you get diminishing returns on EXP gains as pilots approach 100 and anything beyond the 70's mark requires some serious combat, I like the argument for keeping the 81+ pilots in TRACOM till you've got the late-war planes as they:

1. Act as a force multiplier for some of the late-war IJ aircraft.
2. Are now in a position where they can build EXP easier due to superior airframes generating more kills.

What you'd end up with, in theory, is a nice synergy. Better airframes generate better kills for pilots that need those kills to build their EXP further.

This does not work any longer. In my last two games (one to Jan '43, current to Sep '43) its happened only twice. What now appears to be happening is that once you get enough ( ~100 ) pilots into the TRACOM it'll begin to raise pilot experience levels.

Not WAD.

Here are a few details on the current IJAAF Fighter Pilot Training program.

Edit: I replaced the pilots in 246th Sentai with 65+ experience "trained" pilots.
