30th Div: 2x Infantry Regts are at Bangkok. 90 days until the Engrs, Arty and Recon Regts arrive at Keijo. The 41st Regt is on the Bengal Front.
31st Div: 3x Infantry Regts are at Moulmein with 32nd Div. Only 13 days until the Engrs, Tanks and Arty Regts arrive at Shanghai.

The Infantry Groups that will form the other 40s Divs are already in SEAF at key bases including Lae, Buna, Milne Bay, Rabaul, Torokina and Shortlands.

Decision time for 8th Area Army. Does the IGHQ commit to trying to recapture Guadalcanal and Tulagi?

16th and 21st Divs are 60% prepared for Lunga and 52nd Div is 60% prepared for Tassafaronga.

The allies have 7x units built around 1x USMC Div at each of Lunga and Tulagi.
Tassafaronga has 1x small infantry unit, but no airfield.

To avoid a costly amphibious assault against Lunga, a landing at Tassafaronga would be successful but engineers would need to quickly build an airfield to support an overland march to capture Lunga. HQ 19th Army is available to command the ground forces. HQ 7th Air Div could also be used to provide additional aviation support.

The IJNAF 11th Air Fleet, 23rd and 25th Air Flotillas and the Combined Fleet would all support the operation.

Perhaps I wait a few more weeks before pulling the trigger, until the first IJNAF George unit can be used to help sweep Cactus Air Force off the map. That will also allow a few more carrier units to upgrade to A6M5c, Jill and Judy. The replaced A6M5s will help retire the remaining A6M2s from this part of the map.

Maybe a probing CV sweep is required into the Fiji-Guadalcanal gap to try and start knocking down some of the allied air power (especially bombers set to naval attack) before the amphibious operation starts.

Maybe even have a fake amphibious TF for bait.

Good call.
I’ve been wondering what the allies have defending Ndeni right now so will try to get some Dinah IIIs to take some photos.
Then set something up to fake that way.
I can set some restricted Divs to plan for Ndeni and Luganville, maybe even Fiji to try and get the allies second guessing.

It would be good to have enough PP to buy out 4-5 of the 30s Divs and land them on Ceylon.
Realistically that is about 9 months away and the allies will have lots of new toys by then, so some restricted units will just prepare for it as another deception operation.

I would say this depends on how well and for how long you can isolate the area from resupply. Going up against the USMC without superior forces can only succeed if they are out of supplies. JMHO.

I agree, the IJN need to blockade the place. BBs and air bombardments will then be needed to reduce the existing supply.
I'm planning to give it a go as I feel it is too early to go passive and just sit back and wait for the allies to advance, but I will try to take Tassafaronga and Lunga first, then reassess whether to move on Tulagi later.

I just noticed that Tassafaronga has a level 1 airfield, so that is good.

Judy Recon missions are ordered to fly over Ndeni from Shortlands at the limit of standard drop tank range.

I am assuming that making moves on Guadalcanal will draw a reaction from the allies.
They still have plenty of BB/CA/CL/DDs, with 2x USN CV and possibly the RN CV in theatre.
If the battle does draw in some USN forces there will be a chance for the KB and Betty/Nell force to sink a few.

If the battle is still ongoing in Jul 1943, the first few Essex class CVs might be thrown into the battle too.

I was starting to wonder if trying to bomb Darwin's resources was worth it, but the Strat VP jumped to 28 points today from <10 yesterday.
It looks like the 2x Sally Sentai got one hit between them, but whatever they hit increased the Darwin Resources damage to 11(10) and was worth about 20 points.

61st Div TOE looks like a “C” grade Div so will be best used in a garrison/defensive role.
The Ndeni objective is just for deception purposes. It might be bought out at some point as an emergency reinforcement for somewhere like the Marianas, Kuriles or similar. Unlike most units in Japan it will be allowed to take replacements to fill its TOE to 100%.
There are about 20 LGEN’s on the reserve list with land skill >65, but LGEN Hirata’s other stats are decent so he will stay in command.

I've bought out one or two units like this in my game, but buy it out before it takes replacements. It'll be cheaper that way.

IOW turn off replacements.

I left replacements on for a few days just to get an idea for how many replacements arrive each turn for units based at Tokyo. I just turned the replacements off to save supply, but at least have a guide now when to switch replacements back on so that the unit is full by the time I want to use it in action.

I don’t know the exact formula and don’t need to, but I assume the PP cost has something to do with device type and load costs.
As day breaks on 17/3 this Div needs 838 PP to change. That’s +41 PP for the +21 squads/devices received in the last 2 days.
Going by the 70th Div which has 1 less Infantry Bn and less support squads, 61st Div will need >1200 PP to buy out once it is at 100% TOE.

This Div will need about 100 days to fully mobilise once replacements are turned back on.
One downside to switching replacements off is that the replacement squads won’t be training, so might not have time to increase their experience level before they are thrown into combat. The experience level will probably keep dropping as replacements are added.
By leaving replacements on and letting the unit train, once prep = 100 experience would at least increase to the national average. I just checked the manual at para 8.2.1.4 and it says experience can be trained up to 55 for IJA and 50 for IJN.
The big downside to filling the unit completely is it would cost more supply to feed the extra soldiers for more days that they are in uniform.
Reducing supply use is probably more important right now, rather than trying to get the full Div to reach 55 experience.

Assaulting units:
23rd Army – most of these units will advance to maintain contact. The next hex along the road to Tezpur is Jungle Rough terrain with numerous defenders, so an attack won’t be ordered when they get there.
51st Division
4th Tank Regiment
15th Tank Regiment
21st Mortar Battalion
112th Infantry Regiment – will move SW to join the rest of 55th Div

Aircraft P1Y1 Frances advances R&D – to 10/43 and closing at 4% per day, soon to be 6% per day with the third factory at 25(5) .

Pilot Doikawa H. is reported as having been found – IJN bomber pilot, PO1 with 227 missions, 76 experience.
Group Withdrawals:
2 due today (63 Daily PP) – just when a big operation is brewing in SEAF, dozens of strike aircraft (Betty/Nell) are ordered to withdraw for political reasons…
Groups for today:
703 Ku K-1
701 Ku K-1
AM Wa 104 arrives at Tokyo – to Marianas
E W-25 arrives at Tokyo – to SEAF for local ASW patrols and convoy escort duties.
E W-26 arrives at Tokyo
Loss of SS I-165 on Mar 14, 1943 is admitted
Loss of AK Koryu Maru on Aug 05, 1942 is admitted
TK Ryuei Maru arrives at Hiroshima/Kure – a big 11600 capacity Type-1 TL. It will wait at Sasebo for the next T1TL convoy to pick it up on the way back to Singapore.
SC CHa-54 arrives at Hakodate – pre-war plan was for an ASW Div at Cam Ranh Bay, but there are no allied subs nearby so it will move to Singapore to patrol the shallow hexes around there.

Leaving CAPT Murobe in command of such an inexperienced crew looks like a collision or grounding just waiting to happen.
With an aggression rating of 48, CAPT Baba will not command a surface combat ship in this game.
His high naval rating is very well suited to trying to keep this brand new TK afloat and hauling fuel back to Japan for as long as possible.
It will cost only 1 PP, so if the new CO helps this TK dodge just one USN sub that is a bargain.

Quick google research shows that CAPT Baba was CO of CL Tatsuta when the war started, being replaced in about July 1942.

Assaulting units: more IJA Divisions are moving into this hex. Once I have 9x Divisions that will be 3:1 ratio so a deliberate attack will then be ordered. That is a week or more away, so aerial bombardments will continue to try and wear the defenders down until the attack is ordered.

10th Division
3rd Division
4th Ind.Mixed Regiment
China Expeditionary Army

Ground combat at Comilla (56,39)
Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 3545 troops, 307 guns, 195 vehicles, Assault Value = 1227
Defending force 17536 troops, 363 guns, 702 vehicles, Assault Value = 689
Allied ground losses: good result here from the IJA bombardment in Clear terrain. I would have thought the allies would have decent fortifications here but maybe they don’t.
163 casualties reported
Squads: 4 destroyed, 9 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 5 disabled
Engineers: 2 destroyed, 2 disabled
Guns lost 25 (7 destroyed, 18 disabled)
Vehicles lost 16 (7 destroyed, 9 disabled)
Assaulting units: While the IJA have lots of units in the hex, the raw AV ratio isn’t even 2:1.
A few of the 30s Infantry Divisions could start the slow march north to this sector, but that would take weeks/months for them to get there. Doing that would allow the 5th Division to reform, which is currently a bit wasted providing rear area security forces along the Arakan coast.
25th Army
Imperial Guards Division
18th Division
14th Tank Regiment – light tanks
18th Tank Regiment – decent Tank Regt
19th Tank Regiment – as above

18th Medium Field Artillery Regiment
23rd Medium Field Artillery Regiment
3rd Ind. Mountain Gun Regiment
1st Art.Mortar Regiment
3rd Mortar Battalion
5th Mortar Battalion
2nd Raiding Regiment – the Raiders are not big set piece battle units. They would probably get smashed if they joined a deliberate attack here against fortifications and allied tanks.
3rd Raiding Regiment
4th Raiding Regiment
1st RF Gun Battalion
8th RF Gun Battalion
9th RF Gun Battalion
10th RF Gun Battalion
34th Field AA Battalion

TK Otowasan Maru arrives at Fukuoka – another 11600 capacity T1TL. These TKs are worth 28 VP so if one is sunk I’d need to sink something worth 4x that or 72 points in return to make up for it, so a CVE or better.

Tavoy expands fortifications to size 1 – the 34th and 35th Divisions are both here now, building fortifications and generally having an easy time on rear area reserve duty. They are both “B” grade Divisions with 86 experience each, 100% TOE, so they would be of much more use in the Arakan sector. The IJAHQ staff have been asked to identify which of the 20s and 30s Divisions to move forward into Bengal, while still keeping some in reserve preparing defensive positions in Singapore / Malaya / Thailand / Burma.
Chiba expands airfield to size 5
Nadzab expands fortifications to size 1
SS Gato is reported to have been sunk near Shanghai on Nov 27, 1942
Burma Area Army arrives at Rangoon – GEN Kimura will keep this command. Historically he wasn’t appointed to this command until late 1944, and not promoted to GEN until 1945, but the first GOC GEN Kawabe is still commanding 3rd Army at Yenki. GEN Kawabe is on the list to replace with a LGEN just for role playing reasons, but that will remain a low priority for PP spend for a long time yet.

Air to air losses today were 11-11 so it felt like a relatively neutral day watching the combat animations.
Checking the Int Screen later and the Japanese lost 17 aircraft as ops losses. Quite a few were lost on the flight back to base.
Fatigue and battle damage no doubt the major factors. 15 pilots KIA, 6 WIA. This offsets some of the gains from yesterday.
If the allies keep up the bombing things could take a rough turn for both the IJAAF and the troops on the ground.

LT Masaji Suganami is promoted to LCDR on CV Soryu.
I found this on the interweb after a few minutes of googling, so it must be true.

He will stay in Soryu-1 as the senior flying commander of the Soryu air group.

Kind of OT, but I never fully understood why the USA was the only nation that made all pilots officers. Japan, RAF, Luftwaffe, everyone else had lots of pilot NCO's, but only the USAAF/USN/USMC had 100% officers as pilots.

My Grandfather was a WWII pilot in US Army, and yeah, he was an officer.

A reminder that the pilots, ship crews and ground unit squads in the game aren’t just 1s and 0s.
Young men just doing their jobs to the best of their ability regardless off what rank they wore.

One of my grandfather’s was RAAF, Nav/Bombardier in 51 Sqn RAF bombers Europe.
Wife’s grandfather was RAAF, Spitfire pilot in 152 Sqn RAF North Africa, Italy, India/Burma.
Lucky for me they made it home!

Lest we forget.

The US had enlisted pilots in the Navy, including the Naval Infantry Branch. As for the US Army:

quote:

On the eve of World War II, it soon became apparent that there were not enough college graduates or young men with two years of college to fill planned aviation cadet requirements. As a result, in 1941 Congress authorized an enlisted pilot training program. As aviation students, they would receive the same primary, basic and advanced flight training as aviation cadets who would be commissioned as officers upon graduation. Enlisted students would graduate as staff sergeant pilots and would serve as flight instructors, transport pilots and in similar utility roles. (Later in the program, technical sergeants and master sergeants were allowed to retain their higher rank.) It was never intended that sergeant pilots be placed in a position of command over an officer. Candidates had to have a high school diploma and rate in the top 50 percent of the class, with at least 1.5 credits in math, and be between the ages of 18 and 22.

Despite discrimination from some officers, 2,576 enlisted men are known to have graduated as sergeant pilots under this program. Ultimately they flew virtually all types of AAF aircraft. Although most were elevated to the new rank of flight officer with officer privileges or to second lieutenant before assignment to a combat unit, about 332 pilots departed the United States while still sergeants and about 217 flew combat missions overseas as sergeants. Not counted in this number are other sergeant pilots based in the United States flying antisubmarine combat patrols. At least 137 Americans enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and were trained as Noncommissioned Officer pilots, then later transferred to the Army Air Force as sergeant pilots before promotion.

Half of the first graduating class of flying sergeants went overseas with the P-38-equipped 82nd Fighter Group. Members of this class shot down 130 enemy aircraft, and nine became aces. In all, former sergeant pilots destroyed 249.5 enemy aircraft and 18 became aces flying fighters. William J. Sloan was the leading ace of the 12th Air Force with 12 victories. Four WWII enlisted pilots became general officers (seven pre-WWII enlisted pilots also became generals). Also included among former sergeant pilots are international race car driver Carroll H. Shelby and USAF test pilot and later air show aerobatic performer Robert A. "Bob" Hoover.

Thanks RJ, that seems to be the way the RAAF trained pilots too with NCO rank through training.
I’ve seen pictures of my grandpa wearing SGT rank during training then he was commissioned later.
I’ll check his service record for when, from memory it was relatively late when he was already in England.

This doesn’t mention ranks, but it summarises the Empire Air Training Scheme which isn’t modelled in game.
https://www.awm.gov.au/articles/encyclopedia/raaf/eats

Here are a few lines from his diary. There are a few ships mentioned that are in the game:

Mon 24 May 43 - Left home in pouring rain - forgot it was Joyce's birthday. [This is the first line of the diary. Not a good start, forgetting his wife's birthday on the day he left then not seeing her again for more than 2 years!]
Tues 25 May 43 - spend the night on board [USS Mount Vernon, for trip to San Francisco via NZ]
Fri 11 Jun 43 - About 3pm escorted by USN Blimp. Passed under the Golden Gate Bridge at about 1830. [train journey to New York followed].
Thu 1 July 43 - went aboard the towering ship [RMS Queen Elizabeth] in the early hours - we were last aboard and completed the cargo of about 18,000 troops (a real league of nations - States preponderating).
Tue 6 Jul 43 - Sighted Ireland to starboard and Scotland to Port about 3pm. Passed an in-bound convoy of supplies from America including tankers and Liberty ships - saw four small aircraft carriers.
Sun 25 Jul 43 - Interview in morning with F/L Martin. Not much chance of Coastal Command so it will be Navigator.

Wed 31 May 44 - Saw F/Lt McCloy who said I had been strongly recommended for a commission - and that my work had been quite good.
Thu 1 Jun 44 - Met W/Cdr who seems to be a friendly yet determined chap; also the bombing leader.
Fri 2 Jun 44 - Given leave early as Jim has to receive his D.F.M from the King on Tues.
Sat 17 Jun 44 - On ops. St Martin d'Hortier. Quite a successful trip. [His first op, St-Martin-l'Hortier railways targeted]
Fri 30 Jun 44 - Flew with F/S Davies to attack German Panzers at Villers Bocage. Flew over Selsey Bill & the beachhead. Really a wizard prang with terrific concentration - bombs must have obliterated the target area [266 aircraft including 105 Halifaxes took part in this raid].
Tues 8 Aug 44 - P/O came thro'. Effective from 11th July.
His diary is brief on the details of the operational missions but they are mentioned in between stories of sporting events, books and movies, and glasses of beer in various pubs while on leave!

Tue 8 May 45 - Finally got aboard before midday on V-day. Slept on board [MV Rangitata, at Liverpool, returning home via Panama and NZ. Last entry in the diary was Sat 16 Jun 45 as the ship left Wellington, NZ]

Back to the war, IGHQ has decided to thin out the rear area reserve troops along the south Burma coast.
34th, 35th, 36th and 39th Divs will be committed to the Arakan sector but will need to march there overland as the IJN refuse to make ships available for them for political reasons.
30th Div (-) will stay at Bangkok, 31st Div (-) at Moulmein, 32nd Div will move south to Tavoy and 37th Div will remain at Victoria Point.
Royal Thai Army Divs are generally split into thirds and are providing the garrisons for other bases that need 10-20 AV plus other bases around Rangoon just to try and protect against allied para drops.

Frank research factory repairs are creeping up.
Pre-war estimate using the 63% rule was for Frank-A research to start on 23 May 43, so I just need to be patient.
Based on these numbers, the first factory should start research in 2-3 weeks, so mid-April. The 26(4) factories might also start research in late April.
Getting the Frank in numbers will be a game changer as the Tojo and Oscar MGs just aren’t powerful enough to bring down enough allied heavy bombers.

jdsrae: I normally don't read Japanese AARs but I thought I'd give this one a glance (and I'm glad I did--very interesting). I don't know if anyone mentioned it or if you've already figured it out, but regarding Post #1390 if you split that division into three parts it'll pull in devices three times more quickly (e.g. each third will pull an infantry squad each day).

Cheers,
CB

That’s one of those little details I once knew but had forgotten, so thanks for the reminder!
When it comes time to fill out that Div it will only take a bit over a month now.
Cheers
