According to that alternate Combat Report, you took a nice bite out of his CV bomber complement - good show! He likely went back to replenish aircraft and pilots as much as ammo. I think he will return soon. In the meantime you can raise heck elsewhere ...

Oh and the carnage of his air groups in the alternate universe will clearly lead to a divergence of the timeline!

I know we still got a bunch of planes last turn, but I think all his carriers are there. He has lots and lots more planes on board.

INVADED

INVESTED
Taung Gyi

CHANGED OWNERSHIP
Allied forces CAPTURE Iwo-jima !!!

Overall

• No carrier info, but based solely on DL of our subs I believe large enemy carrier forces are SE of Mindnao.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• Ship repairs and loading engineers for Iwo-jima.

Pacific

• The battleships will be back to Pagan tomorrow, safely under a large fighter umbrella by daybreak. I doubt the enemy fleets carriers will try a fast raid to catch our battleships, but if they do they will miss them.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• Hollandia facilities did not repair at all and Biak just barely, so shattered are the engineer units there. The two AVD at Biak are taking advantage of the quiet to head for Manus.

Philippines

• Looking for more oilers, found an ASW group.

• Well, I didn't expect that. During combat I saw the starting AV of the Imperial forces were very low, much less than 10 overall if I saw correctly and as it went down to 0 I thought, "this could be very good!" Now the USMC 22nd Rgt has 4 able infantry squads so they will bombard, as will the badly depleted USA 111th IR.

• The base is in decent shape with port damage of 55% (and no airfield built). The first base forces are on the way. Pure engineer units I had planned to send up from Pagan but they still in some use there, so other will be sent from Hawaii. 900 mines will be laid around the harbor in two days. The contingency units were not needed and I will have to figure out what target to prepare them for. AVD's are on the way from Pagan and elsewhere, and PBY's are en route.

Complete combat report attached.

• The battleships back from bombarding Iwo-jima have all replenished and will sit in TF at Pagan to perform minor at sea repairs; tomorrow one CVE group from Iwo-jima will arrive at Pagan to replenish; two oiler TF's at Pagan are about empty and will return to Pearl Harbor; a full replenishment TF is on the way to Pagan from a holding area but the CVE group will have to wait a couple of days for its arrival.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• No carrier info.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• Battleship Tennessee is ready yet again and hopefully will avoid enemy submarines this deployment. She is leaving San Francisco for Pearl Harbor.

Pacific

• Woleai will be the next invasion target. Possessing it will extend our search coverage a little past Babeldaob but the real benefit will be protecting Satawal, which we already hold. Satawal will be the base for SoPac command HQ during the Truk operation. The Truk operation will come after Saipan and Tinian, but possibly before Guam. Our Guam forces, more than 1,200 AV, are >60% prepared, so I suppose they will be ready before Saipan and Tinian wrap up.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

• The Woleai invasion force is at Townsville awaiting assault shipping.

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• Support units at Hollandia have fully recovered disruption and repairs on the base are proceeding. The units ar Biak lack supply because it was all blasted into the sky. Some will arrive tomorrow; meanwhile repairs are proceeding slowly.

• We are sending the commandos into Babo tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed.

• All of the units now at Iwo-jima have been ordered to prepare for Daito Shoto, except for the 11th IR, which will stay as security for the foreseeable future. Construction of the airstrip is at 8%, but the troops are still ni combat and have high disruption. There are about 2,120 enemy troops on Iwo-jima.

• There a a likely surface combat force in the East China Sea 4 hexes west of Nagasaki. It could be a carrier group, as an AO is sighted and carriers are often mistaken for AO or TK.

• Our carriers are pulling back to their station near Iwo-jima. We still need to get two of them back to PEarl Harbor for repairs.

Interesting - I too took Satawal so that I could put a Command HQ there and took Woleai to add to Naval Search and Recon of Truk. What I am finding is that it is dreadfully slow to build anything at either island - both are (0,0) for SPS IIRC - and they have a stacking limit of 6000. I overstacked Satawal by about 600 troops and it is just a pain to send small ships there all the time to deliver supply at the tiny ports. The Command HQ cannot come until I remove some construction troops.

Good thing Truk is completely suppressed and I have all the other islands in the area so I do not need AA. I have found Ponape to be my most useful base because it is only 10 hexes from Truk but can hold lots of troops and the Port and AF can be built fairly large. I am building Kavieng, Manus and New Hanover to continue the pounding from the air. A huge paradrop will be a big part of my Truk invasion. I am moving most of my transports to Port Moresby/Rabaul initially to train while the Chindits, USMC paras, Australian Paras and a new Fiji Para/Commando unit do prep and get moved to the area. Ponape, Satawal, Woleai, and Guam will all be used for the paradrops. It will be overkill for Truk, but I don't have a lot of other demands on my shipping or amphib troops right now and I need the practice organizing a really big invasion.

Yeah, Waleai has a size 2 airfield and (IIRC) a size 1 port, but I have no plans to build it further. Satawal is a dot base but I won't build it at all, the only reason I want it is because it's the only base within command HQ range of Truk. I have, I think it is 4 working bases with 4EB range of Truk (Ponape, Kusaie Island, Mussau Island, and Kevieng), and at least Ponape is within 2EB range. Manus, Rabaul, and Namatanai are built enough to participate but I have no plans to use them for Truk, just don't need them. New Hanover I haven't built. So Saipan, Tinian, and Guam aren't even needed for air support, but might be convenient additional bases for battleship cycling just to spread out the load.

I thought I noticed a reduction in flak from Truk several turns ago, but I'm not really sure if it's enough to signal supply problems. I think the Empire has been turning its attention to stiffening other resistance points, which has been part of the point of temporarily bypassing Truk; let it soften a bit.

I've never tried a paradrop on Truk (shudder!).

1944 March 06

INVADED
Amphibious TF 526 offshore of Babo
INVESTED
Taung Gyi

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• No carrier info. Sub DL indicates there could be carriers south of Mindanao.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• CV Hornet II is in Pearl Harbor to repair very minor transit damage before heading to the other fleet carriers to allow the two needing repair to be released from station.

Pacific

• Pagan port if 3 + 74% and will max out soon. The battleships at Pagan assigned to bombardment will begin hitting the other islands in the Marianas.

• Agrihan invasion might take place before Woleai, that just depends on transit time. We have a prepared Rgt plus two half prepared Bns to oppose about a Rgt, but the battleship action from Pagan 1 hex away should be epic. Agrihan will give us a place to stage some troops and maybe even an Army HQ to support the Saipan operation.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• The ships made it in! Will they make it out?

My BBs and bombers have been pounding Truk for months. Although there are 17 units showing there, that's down from a high of 28. I take that to mean that all are heavily depleted and disrupted or I would not try the Para landing, even if it is simultaneous with the amphib landing. I will be landing ~ 2000 AV, about a third of it tanks .... I wanted to see how the overstack works out with overkill.

In tracker you can see the stacking cost of each unit in the LCU display. They don't call it that, but I think it's the far right hand column.

The way it works is a penalty on supply each turn, on Disruption, and Fatigue. Maybe other things they didn't mention, but at least those three. If the over stacking is really big then you might need to land supply each and every turn (the penalty is applied and supply deducted after it is used for other things in the turn). Have on hand lots of AK and AKA loaded with just supply so you can land a ship or two worth every turn if needed. You'll have to judge by looking at how much supply disappears each day.

That is why I don't like to put a lot on islands and really prefer air mobile troops in the Pacific. It is the Navy that controls the space and the KB can't be everywhere, and then all of a sudden Japan loses the KB and all the ground forces are in POW camps basically.

I guess you might argue that those 28 units bought time...but I doubt it will be worth it.

• With perhaps 80,000 stacking value (way over the limit) to invade Saipan I likely don't have the sealift to land them all at once, but with no shock attack required I'll just land them in phases. Considering troops there will need to recover between the first few assaults, I might also land assault troops on Tinian. Both bases are in easy range of Pagan for battleship bombardments to rearm.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• Quiet. Some supply is now at Biak and more will be offloaded the day after tomorrow. The various APD were not bothered. Hollandia is repairing well.

Philippines

• IJN carriers might be at or near Davao.

China

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

• Iwo-jima might have a fighter strip ready in 3 days. A base force and Air HQ have landed (almost completely) and combat troops will board those ships as quickly as possible.

• We should have a fighter strip at Iwo-jima tomorrow. Also tomorrow we will have a second PBY group searching from Iwo-jima, focusing on the north but with range limited to avoid heavy fighter concentrations over the Home Islands' ports.

• The first assault troops to leave Iwo-jima are beginning to load now.

Sorry for the blown out list, but I've got a bunch of armored units in transit so all the individual fragments show up.

This is the list of assault units for Saipan, but with "Base Load" (aka stacking value) added. The theater HQ and the Army HQ don't need to land on the island, just be close enough, but even without them I'll have around 75,000 stacking value on Saipan against (IIRC) 35,000 limit. Holy supply penalties, Batman!

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• No carrier info, but based on lowered sub DL levels I wonder if the main enemy carrier forces have moved with north along the western end of the Philippine Sea or have transited to the South China Sea.

• In about a week the first B-29 groups arrive at Aden. They can transfer from Akyab (size 9) to Darwin (size 9), and from there hit Balikpapan and Samarinda at normal range. Thinking on it...

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

Pacific

• In about 4 days a large batch of engineer units will be at Iwo-jima to begin unloading and building. The same convoy will lift off the remaining assault units not detailed to defense.

• If the weather allows, we start aerial Recon tomorrow on Daito Shoto. Hopefully that will fix some Imperial naval forces in place.

• If enemy carrier forces are near Batan Island they could be in place for battle near Daito Shoto tomorrow. Of course, we will not be there.

• The Agrihan invasion force is loading at Jaluit.

• With DL 9/10, Truk Recon reports 6 units; 7,180 troops; 148 guns; 58 AFV. I'm not sure if this is a transient recon issue or if there has been some evacuation going on.

• The Woleai invasion convoy will arrive at Townsville in 4 days to load the assault forces.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• No real carrier info. Sub DL's in the East China Sea towards Japan are all 10/10, plus there is a convoy at Daito Shoto, so the IJN might be trying to ambush any strike on that convoy. It's even possible that 6 ships, including a tanker, spotted at Tokunoshima are actually carriers.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

Pacific

• Ambush at Almagan, but it failed. We keep up the pressure.

• The Agrihan assault forces have finished loading at Jaluit and the invasion convoy will head for the target as soon as more supplies are loaded.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

• In two days the Woleai invasion convoy will arrive at Townsville where the assault forces are waiting. Amphibious assets are being dispatched to Port Moresby to pick up the Bde detailed to seize Lautem.

• The USN cruiser force is sailing from Darwin to cover the convoy for Boela staging near Dobo.

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• That DD near Ternate is in company of at least two cruisers. I can't tell which way they are heading, and since they could make the vicinity of Boela in one day I have to hold back the Boela bound convoy.

• The little APc's were empty by the time the air strikes came in. Our warships have only minor damage but they do need ammo and air cover, so back to Darwin. Houston and Pensacola are both overdue for refits but those will have to wait. The little APc's will about exhaust their fuel running for Dobo.

• The Nells came in from about straight north, and the only thing there bigger than size 1 is Davao (size 2) at 19 hexes away. Is that possible? With torpedoes? Manado is size 3 but is not on the vector which showed during the animation.

• Our escort carrier force, 4 hexes ESE of Biak, is not spotted.
