I don't believe that the torpedo bombers are bothered by the airfield size requirements.

• Our surface force will make it back to Darwin safely. All but one badly damaged APc made it to Boela and they have disbanded into the harbor there.

• The enemy carriers are 3 hexes NW of Boela in the company of a cruiser force. There is a larger cruiser force at Ternate which our 2EB attacked today.

• We have cargo and fuel convoys crossing the Gulf of Carpentaria heading for Darwin. I won't turn them around just yet.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

• It looks like allowing the convoys bound for Darwin to continue was a good call.

• Our surface force has replenished at Darwin, all good - no torpedoes! Who forgot to send an AD or AKE to Darwin?

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• We lost 8x B-24 to massed Zeros over Kendari. The first wave went well, but a smaller straggler group was unable to defend itself as well. Recon reports no aircraft based at Kendari. The enemy carriers were not spotted today. In fact, none of the enemy naval forces were spotted by search.

• We continue supplying Biak by APD runs with the (small) battle fleet loitering nearby.

Philippines

China

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

OK. Can they really carry torpedoes out to 19 hexes?

I'm wondering if maybe FOW gave me a misleading incoming strike vector. Manado is only 11 hexes away.

I dunno - looks like your BB TF ambushed that SSX pretty good! Interesting ploy, using the BBs to lure it in.

Or were you referring to your SS Drum not getting the drop on those DDs? I bet the crew never want to have zukini again!

I don't believe that the torpedo bombers are bothered by the airfield size requirements.

Those are 2EB.

But those 2EBs are still considered torpedo bombers.

OK. Can they really carry torpedoes out to 19 hexes?

I'm wondering if maybe FOW gave me a misleading incoming strike vector. Manado is only 11 hexes away.

I haven't opened my game in months but I do believe that the second Nell has a normal range of 21 hexes . . .

INVADED
Amphibious TF 444 offshore of Agrihan
INVESTED
Taung Gyi

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• No carrier info.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• CV Wasp II and CVL Bataan are leaving Pearl Harbor for the Marianas.

Pacific

• Successful landing. Disruption is in the teens for all three units, so no assault for at least a day, but there is no rush. No auto-bombardment by the Japanese forces present, so they have no real artillery. Our two underprepared Bns took nearly 30% infantry squad casualties, almost all disablements.

• Eighth US Army HQ, commanding the upcoming Saipan invasion, is in place on Pagan. BB Tennessee has arrived on station at Pagan and will join her sisters.

• Our Corsairs and P47s ran sweeps against the 47 enemy fighters seen at Guam, but they remained on the ground. What is their purpose: kamikaze; held to add to a carrier battle?

• There are 2 ships in convoy seen heading to the southern Marianas, I think they are just sightings of submarines.

• The fleet carriers and some old battleships, along with various escorts, are departing Pagan to support the Woleai invasion.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

• The fuel and supply convoys are unloading at Darwin without incident, including without being sighted.

• The Lautem invasion convoy has refueled at Cairns and is heading for Darwin. When that operation proceeds and exactly how we cover it are still up in the air.

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• We've gotten part of a base force into Biak by flying boat and the rest is on the way by LST. The port at Biak is 39% built to size 1.

• The Aus 11th Bn engineers and conscripts from defensive positions at Boela will complete a fighter strip tomorrow and we will begin airlifting in support units, beginning with an air HQ.

• An air HQ is partially lifted into Dobo, aiming to bolster air operations from that base.

• A PBY Sqn is moving from Sarmi up to Biak, getting our coverage very close to Mindanao.

• That convoy with many assault troops from Iwo-jima is unloading at Hollandia.

Philippines

China

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

• There is a good size convoy with an ASW group escort at Daito Shoto. We have many subs assigned to prowl the area, and in 3 days a dozen submarine TF will lay 240 naval mines there.

• So those small ship convoys I've occasionally seen have been fast transport, certainly bringing in supplies. Which we will blow up.

• The Woleai invasion forces will move to 1 hex from that Atoll tomorrow.

• Our newly expanded search coverage has picked up destroyers in TF at Davao.

• Based on sub DLs there is a chance there are enemy carriers just east of Mindanao.

China

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina

• The sweeps over Prome were unopposed - I only thought they might be in case of ambush on the bombers - and the bombers are doing very great damage to the ground forces there.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

• Well protected.

• As far as I can tell, none of the Woleai invasion forces have been spotted, only those TFs which intercepted the fast supply runs, and they have stayed near the Marianas to interdict that shipping. The fast battleship TF could easily have been interpreted to have been part of the interception forces.

• Woleai invasion tomorrow.

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• It seems this is one of those TFs spotted yesterday, and the other one is also in the same hex. Nearby submarines have DL 2/2, so I doubt carriers are present.

• Our naval forces near Biak will move to a spot just across the island from that base and at the base to lie in ambush in case enemy surface forces are making another run to punish the fighters based at Biak. Right now they are 14 hexes away, so our own cruisers will be at Biak, our destroyers across the point of the island in front of our carriers, and our carriers across the island to the east. Strike aircraft set to range 6, both surface combat TFs set to React 6.

• Fighters have been flown into Boela and will begin CAP tomorrow.

When an IJN intelligence officer was asked that question, he probably drew a big circle in the Pacific Ocean and said "Somewhere in there!" But of course, he would state that in Japanese and not in English.

• The enemy task force was smashed, only 1 escort which was attacked escaped without damage. 4 hexes to the NW there are at least 2 more ships, but details are lacking.

• The expected surprise air strike by bombers in the Marianas materialized on battleships heading back to Pagan, but was inconsequential. I was really expecting the IJN SSX to lay west of the southern Marianas, so I sent the battleships the long way around to the east.

• The 4EB here will now target Koepang airfield. If it is closed rapidly enough they will switch targets to Kendari.

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• Our carriers near Biak remained unseen and unengaged, 12 hexes from the enemy carriers. With those carriers out of the way, our escort carriers near Biak will cover the invasion of Sorong and Lautem. The Lautem invasion convoy is loaded and waiting at Darwin, so the covering force will proceed through the Ceram Sea to the Banda Sea. Bombers assigned to close Namlea airfield (unoccupied, and closed) and Ambon airfield (closed) will now target Koepang airfield.

• Biak port is now size 1.

Most excellent result, destroying the mini-KB! Would be nice if you can finish off Haguro on the cleanup. Bravissimo!

Thanks!

Yes, it would be. Damage was great so I figure if she is still afloat search will find her tomorrow. They are pretty far inside my search coverage for a heavily damaged ship.

000022 Afternoon Air attack 1944-03-30 99,104 Woleai

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Woleai at 99,104

Weather in hex: Moderate rain

Raid spotted at 16 NM, estimated altitude 7,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 7 minutes

Allied aircraft
F6F-3 Hellcat x 34
TBF-1 Avenger x 17

Allied aircraft losses
TBF-1 Avenger: 3 damaged

Japanese Ships
DD Oshio

Aircraft Attacking:
17 x TBF-1 Avenger bombing from 5000 feet
Naval Attack: 2 x 500 lb GP Bomb

• Enemy disposition: One of the DD which struck at Woleai is 3 hexes WSW of Woleai; what is possibly the remains of the carriers and their escorts is 6 hexes NE of Biak; a TF/convoy of 5 ships with 1x TK + 1x E is 3 hexes WNW of Babeldaob, but this could be a carrier force as I think a tanker in this position at this time is less likely.

• Our fleet carriers will move 3 hexes WNW in case there is an enemy carrier force and they are trying for an 8-hex engagement.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

• Our naval forces now 1 hex NW of Waigeo are all spotted DL 10/10. Submarines in the area have very modest DL's, so maybe this is just due to land-based search.

• The CVE and cruisers near Waigeo will continue toward Darwin as planned. The 7x Fletcher DD near will make a sweep to the east in hopes of engaging remnants of the enemy carrier force.

• Agrihan now has a port, we will build it to size 2(0) before switching to airbase construction.

• Our fleet carriers are not spotted and they will remain in place while loading operations continue at Woleai.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• There is an enemy cruiser force just north of Manado, heading SE.

• Supply operations at Biak are proceeding smoothly.

• Our covering forces are 2 hexes east of Lautem, our invasion convoy is just SW of Babar; none are spotted, so all will proceed to a point just east of Lautem for invasion the following day. We will have to reevaluate tomorrow based on where that enemy cruiser force goes and what additional or refined scouting becomes available.

• We have a convoy of small ships unloading supplies at Boela, and they are spotted DL 6/6. At 12 hexes away from that enemy cruiser force, they have to suspend unloading and move off for now.

• Koepang airfield is closed so the 4EB at Darwin will switch to Kendari.

• Namlea is ours so now we have to fix the damn place.

My game, I am the evil empire, is almost at the exact place yours is, sent off 29 march 4 this morning. I have an opponent I have been playing against for 7 years and we average 3 turns a day and swap sides once we conclude a contest. It is interesting reading your AAR and getting an insight to what my opponent might be thinking/planning as our dispositions are approximately the same. My opponent used his B-29s for the first time on the 28th of Mar 44, unfortunately a lot more to come.

When you are bombarding with the intention of hitting enemy troops, have you noticed any difference in the results from whether, during target selection, you click on the troop dot or the middle of the hex? I find that clicking on the middle of the hex tends to get more hits on base facilities rather than troops while it is the other way around when I click on the troop dot. It could be confirmation bias though, so I welcome other input.

You mean naval bombardments? No, no difference at all. I am pretty sure there is no choice allowed in the code, it chooses based on other factors, but not on player selection.

BTW I forgot to set them to bombard this turn.
