Another day of about even losses in SEAF, but Warhawks trump Oscar escorts in Bengal.
Supply gets above 900k at Tokyo and is increasing steadily.

Ki-21-IIb Sally x 13
Ki-43-IIa Oscar x 6
Ki-49-IIa Helen x 17
Ki-49-IIa Helen: 2 damaged
Allied aircraft losses – no allied CAP despite fighters being present on the ground. That will probably change tomorrow so the bombers are stood down and a Tojo sweep is ordered over the allied stack in the open just E of Dacca.
Martlet II: 1 destroyed on ground
Runway hits 4
Also attacking 85th British AT Gun Regiment ...
Also attacking 1st Indian Light AA Regiment ...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on 6th Medium Regiment, at 56,38 (Dacca)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on 21st Indian Mountain Gun Regiment, at 59,37 , near Tezpur
Ki-43-IIa Oscar x 19
Ki-49-IIa Helen x 21
Ki-43-IIa Oscar: 7 destroyed – crunch! This was the 203rd Sentai, one of the lower experienced but still plenty of 70s experience pilots. It will withdraw to Rangoon to replace losses and recover morale which is now in the 20s.
I should have known there would be LRCAP over this large allied stack of 18 units and swept it first.
Allied aircraft
P-40K Warhawk x 13
P-40K Warhawk: 1 destroyed
Aircraft Attacking:
21 x Ki-49-IIa Helen bombing from 15000 feet – the raid was at 15k’ while the LRCAP was at 20k’.
Ground Attack: 4 x 250 kg GP Bomb

Morning Air attack on 117th RAF Base Force, at 56,38 (Dacca)

Ki-49-IIa Helen: 1 damaged
Allied ground losses:
3 casualties reported
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Munda , at 111,134
Weather in hex: Partial cloud
A6M5 Zero x 58
A6M5c Zero x 6
N1K1-J George x 12
A6M5 Zero: 3 destroyed – looks like I need to replace A6M5 on the front lines as soon as possible. They are not durable enough and have no armour. Production of George is close to 120/month while A6M5c is 90/month. Not enough to sustain losses like this for more than a few days each month. The CAP umbrella will be shrunk by 1 hex to leave Munda unprotected tomorrow.
A6M5c Zero: 1 destroyed
N1K1-J George: 1 destroyed
Allied aircraft
F4F-4 Wildcat x 30
F4U-1 Corsair x 2
F4F-4 Wildcat: 8 destroyed – at least more Wildcats are being knocked down each turn, but it 1:1 kill ratio is no good when trying to stay above 3:1 total VPs by the end of the 1943.
F4U-1 Corsair: 1 destroyed
CAP engaged:
201 Ku S-1 with N1K1-J George (0 airborne, 0 on standby, 7 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 9000 , scrambling fighters to 12000. Interesting mix of heights for the scrambles. I wonder if this indicates the height of different battles as the scrambled flights leave their base.
201 Ku S-1 Det with N1K1-J George (0 airborne, 4 on standby, 0 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 9000 , scrambling fighters to 14000.
252 Ku S-1 with A6M5 Zero (0 airborne, 0 on standby, 7 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 7000 , scrambling fighters to 8000.
253 Ku S-1 with A6M5 Zero (0 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 5000 , scrambling fighters to 12190.
251 Ku S-1 with A6M5 Zero (3 airborne, 7 on standby, 0 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 7000 , scrambling fighters between 7000 and 14000.
6th Ku S-1/A with A6M5 Zero (0 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling) – morale is trashed so this unit will move back to Rabaul to recover.
Group patrol altitude is 5000 , scrambling fighters to 14000.
Kaga-1 with A6M5 Zero (0 airborne, 0 on standby, 6 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 9000 , scrambling fighters to 12000.
Shokaku-1 with A6M5c Zero (0 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 7000 , scrambling fighters between 0 and 7000.
Zuikaku-1 with A6M5 Zero (0 airborne, 0 on standby, 10 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 7000 , scrambling fighters to 14000.
202 Ku S-1 with A6M5 Zero (0 airborne, 4 on standby, 0 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 7000 , scrambling fighters between 7000 and 11000.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Munda , at 111,134
A6M5 Zero x 48
A6M5c Zero x 5
N1K1-J George x 8
A6M5 Zero: 2 destroyed
Allied aircraft
F4F-4 Wildcat x 10
F4U-1 Corsair x 4
F4F-4 Wildcat: 1 destroyed
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Munda , at 111,134
A6M5 Zero x 41
A6M5c Zero x 5
N1K1-J George x 8
A6M5 Zero: 3 destroyed – not good to lose 4 for no enemy losses, but the LRCAP is arriving piecemeal. I’ll check pilot fatigue levels, but a day of avoiding combat by reducing the CAP radiues could help.
N1K1-J George: 1 destroyed
Allied aircraft
F4U-1 Corsair x 6
No Allied losses
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Munda , at 111,134
A6M5 Zero x 32
A6M5c Zero x 5
N1K1-J George x 6
A6M5 Zero: 1 damaged
Allied aircraft – still enough CAP to contest the heavy bombers.
B-17E Fortress x 3
PB4Y-1 Liberator x 5
B-17E Fortress: 1 damaged
PB4Y-1 Liberator: 1 destroyed, 4 damaged

Some thoughts:

- LRCAP will be costing you - a "ball of yarn" CAP at range 0 works best in my experience. You get less "on standby" and "scrambling" and more "airbourne". That results in good outcomes for the defender from what I've seen.

- Don't get excited about the difference from the A6M5 to the c model. The M5's are dying more because they are more. The Zero just suffers at this point against Corsairs, but IJ needs to play the hand it's been dealt.

- I wouldn't be fussy about a 1:1 exchange. USN plane pools are fixed. IJ aren't. I'll swap Corsairs for Zeros ANY day.

As a wider response on your comment on George production not being enough to sustain losses. Expand production. The George is likely to be in service till the end of the game. Go crazy. I don't really see what is to be gained from having a "just in time" supply system for the IJ air force.

I think (especially in 1943) that Japan should not shy away from these kind of attrition battles. I like to think of them as the Soviet version of reserve armies, just with aircraft.

What was your CAP setup vs the Corsairs?

On the whole, I think you need to be happy at a nearly 1:1 trade against them.

In summary, George at 21k', A6M5/5c at 20k'. Mix or LRCAP range 0 and CAP with range set to 1,2 or 3.
Changed that for the next day to George at 9k', A6M5c at 7k', A6M5 at 5k' for no noticeable difference.

Maybe even go lower.

This is a summary of the situation in Bengal.
Red arrows are Phase 1 moves that are in progress. Yellow arrows show the plan for Phase 2, subject to enemy reaction.
Enemy strength is shown as ##k for thousands of troops.

There are 18 enemy units in the Jungle Rough hex facing the CEA stack. Recon has recently fallen off this hex, but there have been about 70k troops here for weeks so they will be well dug in.
There are another 18 enemy units at Tezpur: 74k troops, 1068 guns, 1387 vehicles. Detection is 9/10. That is probably 3x Divisions, a few Tank Bdes, multiple artillery, AA and base forces. While a clear terrain hex I expect it will be heavily fortified.
The CEA stack will dig in before bombarding, so it should only be a few days before all enemy units are identified in the Jungle Rough hex.
The plan is not to attack the JR hex, but to dig in and let the flanking force flip the hexside to the NW. That will allow the 2nd Phase move shown by the yellow arrow to advance towards Rangpur along a good road, covered from air attack by Jungle terrain, and threaten to cut off supply to Tezpur.

A similar move is in progress to cutoff the 27k troops (2xDivs plus HQ 3rd SF Div) in the XXIII Army hex. If I can force them to move NW out of the hex that will put them out of the war for quite a few weeks while they move through the jungle.

On the left flank, XXV Army at Comilla has been reinforced and now includes the Imperial Guards, 18th Div, 27th Div and 4x Tank Regts.
5th Div is moving forward to recombine, on slow roads from the coastal bases just to the south.
The plan is to sweep Dacca of enemy fighters, then bomb the enemy III Indian Corps (13k troops) that is in the open from the air, before conducting an assault river crossing.

12th, 15th and 33rd Divs are at Chittagong. 12th has been split into thirds and will recover in a mix of combat, reserve and rest mode.
15th Div will stay on the train and move to Comilla where it will be split into thirds to recover recent battle damage while also defending against a spoiling allied para drop.
33rd Div has split into thirds and will takeover garrison duty from 5th Div at Cox’s Bazar and Akyab.

All of these moves will allow the 2nd and 4th Air Div HQs to be flown forward to Silchar and Dimapur. They have been bought out and attached to 3rd Air Army. The motorised support squads will start the slow drive along jungle tracks. HQ 3rd Air Div will stay at Chittagong.
Once the Air Div HQs are in place, the IJAAF will focus on sweeping the allied fighters from the skies by concentrating on Tezpur and alternating to Dacca. That should draw in allied fighter reserves that have been spotted at Calcutta and Rangpur, so it will be another attrition battle that the Tojo will have to carry.

Vella Lavella and Munda airfields don't have enough mechanics to support big range 0 CAP fur balls.
Shortlands, Torokina and Rabaul will be different once the allies advance a bit further north.
Hopefully the last few days makes them pause and reconsider.

There are currently 2x50(10) George-1 production factories with another 8x30 researching the George-2.
I like the idea of increasing production on George and keeping the 8x30 to research the George-5.
There are 2x30 and 1x60 Oscar factories that are currently in mothballs, so I will change two to 2x30 George.
Once they are close to fully repaired I will see if more are needed, including engines.

From my experience, you'll get better results from 30 planes on CAP than from 30 planes on LRCAP. Might be worth trying to fly some more aviation support in, if that's a possibility.

It may just be me, but I always feel that the tactical uses of LRCAP are quite limited, as they do seem to suffer much more versus sweeps compared to regular CAP.

Interesting that you're going for the George-5.

I haven't seen it as a worthwhile investment in time: it's a late '45 plane and only a incremental improvement on the George-1.

Granted, you get to chain factories from the George-1 to get the '5 much earlier, but I compare it with airframes with a similar arrival date. The Sam and Shinden is a big game changer for the IJN, so I wonder if there's merit in making do with the George-1 and putting the factories to the Shinden/Sam...?

Either way, the George needs to do a lot of heavy lifting for the IJN.

Not sure I'd condone switching from Oscars either, if I'm honest. They're needed for escort duties as the war progresses, unless you're planning to use the Frank in an escorting role?

I am going to agree there. Coupled with your comment on needing more Georges, I think you should've only kept a couple R&D Factories to later models, and used most of them on the N1K1. There isn't alot of difference between N1K1 and the N1K2 or N1K5, and even late-war you can still use the N1K1--it's never obsolete. Having "too many" is not a problem.

From what I have read, many think the Frank-r is worth investing in as it performs better than the Frank-a. But I haven't read much difference from George-1 to -2 or -5.

You could make a case the N1K1-2 is the better model anyway than N1k1-5. It has better MVR, and a lower SR of 2, which helps alot. It has better range. It's 4 mph slower than N1K5, and is missing the centerline MGs, so there is that tradeoff, but that's not huge.

If your loses are about even and they are occurring over your base think how he feels about his pilot loses compared to yours,as your WIA pilots can return to service if they survive their wounds as they landed or bailed out over your base. His bailed out pilots mostly bailed out and were captured. So if your loses are equal in air frames over your base his pilots loses are heavier than yours and that might explain why he took a day off.

No allied raids in SEAF on the 18th or 19th so we both blinked at the same time!
Allied strength is seen to be rebuilding by recon reports of the Lunga airfield.
202 Ku S-1 will get 45x George in 2 days (but will probably take 2 weeks to repair them all).

In Bengal I’ve been rotating all Tojo Sentai out of the front line to fill with replacement aircraft and 65+ exp pilots.
They will all be fully repaired in a few days.

I’ll keep the pressure on in both theatres.

Fuel and oil convoys are still doing a good job of avoiding allied subs.
RADMs Miwa and Imamura arrive safely with their oil and fuel convoys at Fukuoka at the same time as CAPT Monzen’s TNTL oil convoy.

Based on the confirmed units outside Tezpur, IGHQ are more optimistic and may even charge directly across the river.
Once Bengal is clear the choice seems to be to besiege Calcutta or unleash the “cavalry” to charge to Delhi.

The turn is back but I can’t run it for about 4 hrs...

The big attack gets a 1:1 with the big Chinese Corps holding the defence together.
Many of the smaller allied units were zeroed but none destroyed.
The relatively inexperienced IJA 54th Div took heavy disablements but all other units are in good order.
Fatigue is a bit high to attack again so this stack will be given at least a day to recover.

The allies are still spotted moving west so they may escape before the next attack.
Going by this result, that wouldn't be such a bad thing.

Question for the IJAAF Generals on the staff, do you recommend changing the Nick-A factories to Nick-C, or just keep building Nick-A until the Randy-B arrives?

I'm leaning towards the 37mm blunderbuss.

But that 2x20mm is a much better combination and will achieve a lot more hits. Even if the bomber is not shot down outright, there ill be many that go down on the way home or will be write offs.

Its only one 20mm.

I haven't tried the 'c', but I prefer the twin HMG's as opposed to the 37mm and its low accuracy.

I took RJ to mean he likes the Nick-A with the twin .50 cals.
For those .50 cals to have a chance of hitting a 4E bomber the Nick has to get within range of the defensive .50 cals.
High chance of the “driven off by defensive fire” message.

I don’t expect the Nick-C would carry many cannon rounds for either weapon, but with good pilots they might be able to score hits from outside defensive fire range.

I could always sit on the fence and keep 1x60 factory on the A and just move the other 1x60 factory to the C.
A competition could be run between 4th and 5th Sentai to see who scores the most kills with the different planes.

I’ve just done a bit of Wikipedia research and it sounds like the B and C models were intended to counter B17s.

Long range bomber escort: I am still using some Nick-A in this role in Burma/Bengal but its a risky task for them. Tojo sweeps need to go in first.
Auxiliary night fighter: most Nick-A are still in this role. They haven’t been brilliant at it, but the allies have stopped night bombing so Nick may have been a big part of the reason for that.
Ground attack: I think I tried it once but it’s just a good way to lose aircraft and pilots.
Low naval attack: I haven’t trained the FB pilots for this role yet but it could be a good use for that 37mm cannon.
Heavy bomber interceptor: this is what I’ve been training them for, both day and night missions.

Future use will probably be a mix of interceptor with increasing use in low naval attack, so I’m back to leaning towards 2x 60 factories on the Nick-C.

Ground combat at 58,37 (near Tezpur)
Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 665 troops, 74 guns, 15 vehicles, Assault Value = 834 – missed opportunity here as an attack would have crushed the 31st US Infantry Regt, but that unit was unidentified and lots of allied units are moving west into this hex. I was half expecting more to arrive today. Higher risk of that happening tomorrow but a deliberate attack is ordered to try and convert this opportunity. If all hexsides of this hex can be flipped it could lead to trapping whatever else is moving into this hex from the east.
Defending force 2616 troops, 41 guns, 46 vehicles, Assault Value = 102
Allied ground losses:
5 casualties reported
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Assaulting units:
1st Army – more HQs than Divs here, so if more allied troops arrive overnight the 3rd and 6th Divs will be in trouble. If no more allied troops arrive the 31st Infantry will be in trouble. It feels like a 50:50 play as I don’t know how far away the allied reinforcements are, but another attack is also ordered in the hex just to the east where the reinforcements are coming from at the same time. If some troops do move west (but not all) then the big HQ CEA stack could force a big win there. If the HQ CEA stack doesn’t get 2+:1 odds, another IJA Div will probably be disabled there. Lots of IJAAF bombers are thrown at these two hexes to try and support the troops on the ground.
12th Army
13th Army
3rd Division
6th Division
2nd Ind. Mountain Gun Regiment
51st Ind.Mtn.Gun Battalion
52nd Ind.Mtn.Gun Battalion
5th RF Gun Battalion
52nd Field AA Battalion
26th Fld AA Machinecannon Company
Defending units:
31st Infantry Regiment – I’d have to check back to the Battle of Luzon, but this might be the second iteration of this Regt. Historically it was destroyed at Bataan so it probably was in this game too. The allied CIC must have purchased it back and sent it to India.

CA Mogami beginning refit in shipyard at Tokyo – the 4/43 upgrade for the 3x surviving Mogami class which includes an air search radar. CA Suzuya was sunk 11/11/42 by 21in Mk10 torpedo, then burnt up at Tulagi. The 7/42 “Scout Cruiser” conversion option for CA Mogami was not taken.
CA Mikuma beginning refit in shipyard at Tokyo
CA Kumano beginning refit in shipyard at Tokyo
CL Sendai beginning refit in shipyard at Manila – another 4/43 upgrade with air search radars fitted.
CL Naka beginning refit in shipyard at Manila
CL Jintsu beginning refit in shipyard at Manila
DD Asagumo beginning refit while under repair in shipyard at Nagoya – damage is now 56/61/8 so the crew are granted 37 days of leave.
Pilot Kamei J. is reported as to have escaped capture – 2LT, 81 exp fighter pilot with 4 kills from the veteran 11th Sentai. He’s a very good pilot to get back.
Pilot Chojiro N. is reported as to have escaped capture – 2LT, 59th Sentai Tojo pilot with 1 kill. His exp is 45 so he must have suffered a big exp loss during captivity.
6 N1K1-J George replacements arrive at Roi-Namur – top ups for 201 Ku S-1
Loss of SS RO-103 on Apr 23, 1943 is admitted

BB Divs 3 and 4 with CA Div 4 are at Rabaul with 6x BB, 4x CA, 1x CL and 17x DD.
The more aggressive staff officers are pushing to throw this force at the USN CAs and CLs, but there are 180+ USMC fighters and about 100 bombers (assumed to be USMC dive bombers) between Lunga and Tulagi that have to be factored in, as well as USN PT boat task forces that will muck with operations points.

There are about 300 land based IJN fighters in total across Tassafaronga, Shortlands and Vella Lavella airfields.
Even if a large portion of those fighters were put on LRCAP over the surface combat task forces it feels like it would be a high risk of losing some BBs and CAs to USMC dive bombers.
There are only 2x ships with air search radars in SEAF at the moment, 2x Akitsuki DDs. The BB Divs have one of them each.
CA Div 4 has no air search radars at the moment.

Probably not a good idea to go risking 100s of victory points worth of BBs and CAs down here at the moment.

But that 2x20mm

Its only one 20mm.

I haven't tried the 'c', but I prefer the twin HMG's as opposed to the 37mm and its low accuracy.

Sorry, my mistake. But I would rather have much more things hitting and doing damage than one that might by accident actually hit. More damaged aircraft means more ops losses or the unit is rendered ineffective because the aircraft are getting repaired. Also, if you can put even a 10% LRCAP over the enemy base as the aircraft return, there will be even more ops losses or even more damaged aircraft shot down on the way home..

On the subject of the Nick models, the A is by far your best bet.

You don't win against 4E's by shooting them down outright - they're too durable for that. It happens on occasion, but it tends to be the exception rather than the rule.

You win by getting putting lots of holes in them, so that they miss with their bombs, crash on the way home in droves, and take weeks to get the planes and pilots back into action.

The 20mm and 2 MG's on the Nick A is a better weapons loadout for that than the one on the Nick C.

The 37mm is nice, but this game is all about rolls. With the 37mm, you'll be rolling to hit. With the 20mm and the MG's, you'll be rolling on damage. I'd rather take the roll that determines the size of hole in the enemy plane than the role that determines if the hole ever gets to exist...

So far it is 3 votes for the Nick-A and none for the Nick-C.

I get the argument for the Nick-A having more chances to cause at least some damage via the 2x12.7mm MGs, but we don't know exactly how that "6" accuracy of the 30mm cannon is used by the game. It does suggest a very low chance of a hit, but ships and bombers are larger targets than enemy fighters so I assume that the size and maneuverability of the target factors into the chances of a hit.

I found a reference on the interweb to the 30mm cannon in the Nick-C having a 15 round link belt. That's probably only enough rounds for a few passes.
Quite a few hundred rounds of 12.7mm ammunition would fit in the same space as the 30mm rounds.

As in real life, the days of the Nick being useful as a bomber interceptor will be limited to the time that the allies fly unescorted raids.
The allies haven't been doing much of that lately in this game, but they must have a lot of 4E bombers on the map somewhere so it could start again in Bengal or SEAF any day now.

Once the P=47s and P-51s are able to escort, Nick will have to be relegated to auxiliary night fighter and low level naval attack missions.
The P-38Gs (13 normal range with drop tanks) are already a big threat to the Nick.
As soon as Frank arrives the Nick will be a 2nd tier aircraft anyway.
