You threw it in the trash - very sad, i guess there was a time in the late 90s and early 00s when i also disposed of some boxed games which now would fetch quite a price in the collector market.

I do have a boxed copy of Panthers in the Shadows and a scanner so when i get some time - perhaps tomorrow, and if i remember - remind me if i dont post tomorrow, i will scan them in and upload it

I've thrown more than my fair share of stuff away only to later regret it. Also sold stuff too.

Hi Agathosdaimon,

It would be much appreciated if you could find some time to scan the manual.
There are at least a few of us web denizens looking for it.

Dox44:

I have looked at your image and your post:

"i have HPS campaign disks. the small disks. numbered 1-10 with Tigers on the Prowl and Panthers in the Shadows + update disks."

===========================================================

CAMPAIGN DISK #1 - 7th Panzer Division "Panzers Forward!"
The first campaign disk, which is for Tigers on the Prowl, places you in
command of a tank battalion in the 7th Panzer Division on the eve of the war
against Russia. The campaign is very tough, and is not for the faint of heart!
Well designed. The Operation Barbarossa scenarios in the campaign are:

1. Alytus, Lithuania 23 Jun 41
2. Vilna, Lithuania 24 Jun 41
3. Lepel, Belorussia 2 Jul 41
4. Senno, Belorussia 6 Jul 41

9. Dmitrov, Russia 2 Dec 41
10. Subzoff, Russia 16 Jan 42

===========================================================

CAMPAIGN DISK #2 - 4th CLY "Into the Cauldron"

The second campaign disk, which is for Panthers in the Shadows, places you
in command of the 4th County of London Yeomanry, sitting in the Western
Desert starting with Operation CRUSADER and leading up to GAZALA in
May 1942. The first half of the scenario has your unit equipped with Honeys
and Crusaders, but you will eventually get Grant lend-lease tanks if you
survive. Historically based on 10 actual battles fought with such units as the
90th Light, the 15th and 21st Panzer, and Ariete Italian Division. Excellent
scenarios with lots of historical tank on tank action. The scenarios are:
1. Bir-el-Gubi (CRUSADER) 19 Nov 41
2. Gabr Saleh (CRUSADER) 20 Nov 41
3. Sidi Rezegh (CRUSADER) 22 Nov 41
4. TotenSonntag (CRUSADER) 23 Nov 41
5. Beda Fomm 28 Dec 41
6. Agedabia 30 Dec 41
7. Bir-el-Harmat (GAZALA) 27 May 42
8. Rigel Ridge (GAZALA) 27 May 42
9. Sidra Ridge (GAZALA) 28 May 42
10.The Cauldron (GAZALA) 29 May 42

===========================================================

CAMPAIGN DISK #3 - 1st Bn, 1st SS Panzer Rgt "Liebstandarte in Normandy"
The third campaign disk, again for Panthers in the Shadows, places you in
command of the 1st Abteilung, 1st Panzer Regiment, 1st SS Panzer Division.
It starts July 18th 1944 with the defense of Operation GOODWOOD against
the British, and concludes with actions against the U.S. in the Falaise Pocket
around 18 August 1944. Another challenging campaign, this time from the
German perspective.
The scenarios are:
1. Soliers (GOODWOOD) 18 Jul 44
2. Boyrgruebus (GOODWOOD) 19 Jul 44
3. St. Martin (GOODWOOD) 21 Jul 44
4. Ifs (GOODWOOD) 21 Jul 44

7. Juvigny (FALAISE) 8 Aug 44
8. La Delmeire (FALAISE) 11 Aug 44
9. Carrouges (FALAISE) 13 Aug 44
10.Trun (TOTALIZE) 18 Aug 44

===========================================================

CAMPAIGN DISK #4 - 37th Armor Battalion "Thunderbolt!"

The fourth campaign disk, for Panthers in the Shadows, places you in
command of the famous 37th Tank Battalion, historically commanded by
(then) LTC Creighton Abrams. In the words of one of his subordinates,
"...German tanks where everywhere and he jumped in that command tank...he
took them under fire...all his other boys came in there and they knew they had
a leader. That whenever he would expose them he would expose himself too
and he would...He was out there exposing himself, by God, where you could
pick him out as a leader...absolutely fearless but boy the men loved that. God
damn what a leader."
Said CPT Tom Evans of Abrams: "Abrams, in my opinion, was the finest
soldier I ever met or worked with.....he had no fear, none whatsoever.....He
commanded that tank, and fought that tank. He was a tremendous leader all
the way around."
The famed 37th Tank Battalion fought a series of battles starting mid
September 1944 near Arracourt, France, against the 58th Panzer Corps. The
battles were mainly against the brand new Panthers and Mark IVs of
the 111th and the 113th Panzer Brigades . These two brigades were virtually
destroyed by the end of the month, thanks to the technologically inferior but
superbly led U.S. forces under Abrams and COL Bruce Clarke.
Take command of this battalion, armed with light tanks, M4A1 Shermans,
M4A3 Shermans, and one stolen Hellcat (true story!) and fight against the
German 58th Panzer Corps in France. This should prove to be an excellent
campaign, as the historical data is very good, sometimes down to the exact
tank numbers for both sides. The maps were taken from very detailed military
1:50,000 scale maps of France, of the exact battlefields.
The scenarios are:
1. Ste. Genevieve 13 Sep 44 (river crossing)
2. Lixieres 13 Sep 44
3. Valhey 14 Sep 44
4. Maixe 16 Sep 44
5. Arracourt 19 Sep 44 (defense)
6. Arracourt 19 Sep 44 (counterattack)
7. Ommeray 20 Sep 44 (meeting eng.)
8. Moncourt 20 Sep 44 (night attack)
9. Juvelize 22 Sep 44
10.Lezey 25 Sep 44
Two battles have been previously released on the original disk but they
needed to be included to preserve the historical flow of the campaign.

===========================================================

CAMPAIGN DISK #5 - PanzerGrenadier Div "Grossdeutschland on the Steppes"

The fifth campaign disk, for Tigers on the Prowl II, places you in command of
a Kampfgruppe of Grossdeutschland Panzergrenadier Division as they move
across the steppes of Russia as part of the 1942 Summer Offensive in the
south.
The scenarios are:
1. GOLOGULOVKA 30 Jun 42
2. OLYM I 30 Jun 42
3. OLYM II 01 Jul 42
4. JASSENKI 01 Jul 42
5. GOROSCHETSCHNOJE 02 Jul 42
6. KULEVKA 03 Jul 42
7. SSUCHTINO 10 Sep 42
8. HILL 197 11 Sep 42
9. SEPTEMBER 15 15 Sep 42
10.KOSTONOSSOVO 30 Sep 42

==========================================================

CAMPAIGN DISK #6 - II/8th Pz "Heia Safari!" Order
The sixth campaign disk, which is for Panthers in the Shadows, places you in
command of the II Battalion, 8th Panzer Regiment, in the Western
Desert starting with Operation BATTLEAXE and leading up to CRUSADER
in Nov 1941. Excellent scenarios with lots of tank on tank action in the desert.
This historically researched campaign disk is the most intense yet - 8 of the 10
battles are fought in a 4 day period of CRUSADER! Reinforcements will be
slim....can you handle the pressure of being the elite of Rommel's Afrika
Korps? The scenarios are:
1. Fort Capuzzo (BATTLEAXE) 15 Jun 41
2. Fort Capuzzo (BATTLEAXE) 16 Jun 41
3. Bir bu Meliha (CRUSADER) 20 Nov 41

during the invasion of France 1940. The battles are drawn from the actual
historical tank battles fought in May and June 1940 during the blitzkrieg
through the Ardennes, across the Meuse, and into France.

Wargamer Scenario Depot: Tigers on the Prowl Series

=======================================================================================================

The archive [at the link at the top of this post] contains recovered Wargamer Scenario Depot data from two sources:

1.) The 2015 Dump at https://archive.org/details/WargamerGamesDepotArchive20160514.tar

2.) A Internet Archive Downloader Dump in April 2021 to recover what was stored on the Internet Archive's backups.

Unfortunately, out of 4 downloads, 0 (0%) was recovered.

HOWEVER; the huge fans of the Tigers on the Prowl (TOP) series over at Matrix Games had copies, raising the recovery rate to 4 out of 4 (100%).

https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4530262

HAVE:
2192 - Tigers on the Prowl : Infantry Town (recovered through Matrix Games)
2193 - Tigers on the Prowl : Rail Attack (recovered through Matrix Games)
2194 - Panthers in the Shadows: Mech 44 (recovered through Matrix Games)
2195 - Panthers in the Shadows: San Pietro (recovered through Matrix Games)

MISSING:
NONE:

========GAME BACKGROUND========

The Tigers on the Prowl series has been approved for free distribution by Scott Hamilton (the original designer/programmer/copyright holder of the game series); with one provisio:

THERE WILL BE NO SUPPORT PROVIDED BY HPS SIMULATIONS FOR THESE TITLES.

YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN.

The games are in the /Bonus_Games folder and they are:

TOP_Series_Original_SmartWargamer.zip
This file contains the original SmartWargames Group packaging of the TOP series as received by me - all of the add on campaigns that have been recovered have been installed.

TOP_Series_All_FanScenarios_Added.zip
This file is basically the original SmartWargames Group packaging of the TOP series, but with all the extra scenarios available in this collection installed.

The reason for having two installed sets is that while I was installing the extra scenarios, I ended up having to overwrite older maps that came with the SmartWargames Group distribution. In order to be "safe", I included both versions, as hard drive space is now cheap; as is internet bandwidth.

Version numbers for each of the games in this collection are:

Tigers on the Prowl v2.08e
Panthers in the Shadows v1.22e
Broken Alliance v1.03 (26 Mar 1998)
Dragons in the Mist v1.02 (26 Mar 1998)

========CAMPAIGN DISKS BACKGROUND========

A long time ago, HPS Simulations sold campaign disks for the Tigers on the Prowl / Panthers in the Shadows (TOP/PITS) series; for about $15/each.

Unfortunately, at some point in the past, the hard drive at HPS Simulations that contained their "gold" masters for the campaign disks was lost/corrupted/damaged beyond repair. The disks were then lost for possibly over twenty years; until around 2019, when a user on the Matrix Games' Forums by the name of "dox44" posted that he had a bunch of them.

Several individuals with the SmartWargames Group community helped him recover the data on those disks and the recovery rate was:

8 out of 12 (66%) recovered fully
1 recovered partially (8.3%)
three (25%) are still lost.

The disks are in individual folders named with the following sequence: The Campaign Disk # followed by a T or P depending on which game (Tigers on the Prowl / Panthers in the Shadow) that they were for.

The breakdown as of June 2021 for TOP/PITS scenario disks is:

Fully Recovered:
CAMPAIGN DISK #1 (Tigers) – 7th Panzer Division "Panzers Forward!"
CAMPAIGN DISK #3 (Panthers) - 1st Bn, 1st SS Panzer Rgt "Liebstandarte in Normandy"
CAMPAIGN DISK #5 (Tigers) - PanzerGrenadier Div "Grossdeutschland on the Steppes"
CAMPAIGN DISK #6 (Panthers) - II/8th Pz "Heia Safari!"
CAMPAIGN DISK #8 (Panthers) - Operation SEALION
CAMPAIGN DISK #9 (Panthers) - The Fall of France
CAMPAIGN DISK#10 (Tigers) - KG Peiper in Russia
CAMPAIGN DISK#11 (Panthers) - Rommel in the West

Incomplete/Partially Recovered:
CAMPAIGN DISK #4 (Panthers) - 37th Armor Battalion "Thunderbolt!"

Lost/Missing:
CAMPAIGN DISK #2 (Panthers) - 4th CLY "Into the Cauldron"
CAMPAIGN DISK #7 (Panthers) - 2nd Armored Division "Hell on Wheels"
CAMPAIGN DISK#12 (Tigers) - Colonel General Rotmistrov Commands: The 5th Guards Tank Army in the Kosun'-Shevchenkovskii Operation

Wow. Many thanks for sharing this.

I didn't expect that the campaign disks would ever be found and put online.

Best regards,

You'll need to run them in DOSBOX.

I prefer DOSBOX-X

https://dosbox-x.com/

for my modern DOSBOX emulation; because:

The mainline DOSBOX at

https://www.dosbox.com/

has been stuck at 0.74 since 12 May 2010; or ELEVEN YEARS.

-X has a lot of precision and usability updates that make it so much better than the mainline.

Wow. Many thanks for sharing this.

I didn't expect that the campaign disks would ever be found and put online.

Best regards,

Hapshott

Best part is, it came by complete accident.

I recovered I think 95% of every Combat Mission Scenario ever made for the first three games (CMBO/CMBB/CMAK) and managed to find the long presumed dead CM "Scenario Depot II".

I posted my work over at the Battlefront.com forum; and that brought me to the attention of the SmartWargames Group who had gotten in touch with dox44 and helped him recover the data on those disks.

Thanks! One of my favourite games ever just got better!

I have a question: everywhere they talk about TOP. They mean TOP II, right? Because the other games all use the improved TOP II engine.
