No it was a very long thread spirited discussion between the Jasl creator and a few of the forum long time members.

What is ASL?

Heretic!!

Burn the infidel at the stake!

ASL = Advanced Squad Leader (from MMP).

An old board game of the name Squad Leader originally.
A complete set of Squad Leader through Advanced Squad Leader will set you back quite a few hundreds of dollars too. Or put another way, you could sell a complete ASL inventory and pay cash for the best computer on the market.

My collection for instance, I ain't taking offers below 3K.

My Avatar is a modified ASL counter by the way.

VASL is the software that allows a user to play ASL online.

JJ,

Here is as good a place as any to start. THink SPWaW on a flat surface, but you have to remember all of the rules. (Just keeping up with movement costs can fry your brain!)

I've got every ASL module (except for 'Gung Ho') and two of the historic modules, and I can vouch for the expense ... I gathered them over the course of a decade or so. I've still got all the cardboard counters in tackleboxes and most of the boxes. Unfortunately I haven't played it in about five or six years due to lack of time, space, and opponents ... I find Spwaw much easier to PLAY, but with ASL you can have almost as much fun reading the rules, scenarios, etc, as actually playing the game ... You almost have to be a 'Rules Lawyer' to actually play ASL :D  I don't think I could face relearning the rules at this point ... :(, but I still like to leaf through the material.

... out of curiosity, how many here found Steel Panthers (in it's many incarnations) while looking for a form of "computer ASL"?

The game system what got me into all of this!! I even used the rules to play 1/285th armor with!! 40meters =5inches, it was a blast, very tedious, but the actual combat went pretty fast, I was well versed in the rules at the time. Still have mine, have at least 3-4 sets of EACH MODULE, I liked to play big, back when I still had the ping-pong table!! Have at least 4 of each board too!!

Still have all my counters in those old metal band-aid tins, from before they went cheap and started using cardboard boxes, and a bunch of map boards in an old crate...bought a bunch of the extra ones one time, but they are all in numerical order still

I just got Operation Veritable. It's an historical study style campaingn game.My favourite campaign game is Red Barricades. This game allows so much more than SPWAW. There are pros and cons to both games. Either way you look at it they are both lots of fun. I have all the modules to the game and have been playing since 1985. Night rules and fire lane rules are excellent. There are those who play and those who don't play board games. The key is getting into a good learning envirement and you have to want to learn how to play. Some real crazy things can happen when you get hero's created, random sniper attacks, ect ect.

Just saying Steel Panthers is like ASL is all the praise Steel Panthers should ever need eh.

Anyone that won't play Steel Panthers though, would have no desire to play ASL.

But oooooooh the rules lawyering :)

Hey the dumbest thing a wargamer can try to do is attempt to mince words with an ASL vet. Why that's like trying to convert a Mormon (for those interested, I have first hand experience with being a Mormon too hehe, don't worry I got better guys).

Now when you combine an ASL player with a A3R player what do you get I ask. Nothing more than the meanest word smith on the planet eh.

So remember, when arguing game design and simulation specifics with an ASL/A3R vet, you are really either wasting your tme, or you have definitely graduated to the big time.

And for those that have not been with Matrix since like forever :), I am the number one numero uno ASL/A3R demon on the forum hehe.

As a 'Vet" ASL'er I love the simple fact that I DONT have to read and read and read all those ASL Rules

Fire Lanes?

You must have never read the ASL manual then.

Or by tactical, were you meaning a higher echelon than ASL?

Or perhaps, you were hoping a computer wargame could manage it?
