Does physical storage building only raise the maximum storage? or is there any other benefits to it e.g. working as logistical distribution hub, providing emergency stocks in case of supply issues, a resource goody that can be captured..

As near as I can tell storage only raises the maximum limit of goods you can store.

They only raise the limit. It's advisable to build at least energy storage before switching to lasers since the base limit is pretty low. Extra fuel is good to have when you have a large mechanized army. Extra food is nice to have. They give you a bigger buffer to adjust production in case demand increases or production is distrupted.

They're also useful for soaking up Administrative Strain, because that's calculated with the following formula:

quote:

ORIGINAL: Shadow Empire Manual, Page 171

(For Each Asset Beyond Distance
(((Distance-6)/6) * Asset level * production%) / (All Other Assets * Asset
Level * production%)

So especially the earlier tier storages which only use 100 workers, you can absorb lots of Administrative Strain for a reasonable price.

They realy only increase storage, but that in itself can be very usefull.

Zone Inventories are the only sources of storage. They will try to keep 1 turn of consumption (2 for Food) in storage. All excess storage is handed to the SHQ. So the more local consumption you got, the less storage you have in the SHQ.

This is a particulary bad problem with Energy - a few local consumers and your SHQ might literally have no storage left.

Oil depots are handy if you're doing a lot of scavenging. You don't want to be chucking away potentially precious oil because you need the metals that are coming from your recycling ops

Power banks are very useful, lvl1 building doubles storage capacity! (compared to lvl1 physical storages which gain only about 3% capacity) but it's a different tech.

That could be a consideration, although I am much more more afraid of supply disruptions, without supply depots it's extremely easy to grind my empire to halt, which why I keep garrisons and militia across the whole territory.

Yeah, they also helps for items to not be wasted (and maybe even prevent shortages in rare cases ?) if your logistic network is being stressed...

Also if you have item consumption higher than ZONE storage (and I guess also more item production in the zone than ZONE storage ?), you can end up with wasted items !

And your SHQ won't even notify you about the waste in that zone that depends on it; since it' not SHQ's OWN storage that had waste :

(I don't remember, is SHQ not-sold items waste featured in the Urgent Issues Overview too ?)
