Allied cruisers are now spotted back at Madras. They must have smelt a rat.

3rd Carabiniers were destroyed, so the 14th Indian Div stack should be on the brink of surrender. 1st Infantry arrived so will join the attack tomorrow.

The attack on IV Indian Corps got a 1:2 which was kind of expected.
Reinforcements arrived in reserve mode today. They will put in a follow up attack tomorrow to try and reverse those odds and get a 2:1.

Allied air forces didn't fly, which I'll take as a sign that they needed a rest.

Good AAR as always! Refresh my memory, since it's probably many pages back....what is the Naval balance of power situation? What are the total naval losses so far in major ships?

This is the quarterly update from the IGHQ Naval Intelligence Cell.

USS Lexington, Saratoga and Essex are the only USN CVs on the map. USS Independence (CVL) would have commissioned today.
HMS Victorious should be the only RN CV on the map assuming the others were withdrawn on time, with CVL Hermes somewhere too.
USS Indiana and Massachusetts are the only two fast BBs on the map, most likely to be with the USN CVs.
HMS Revenge, Ramillies and Resolution are still on the map somewhere. HMS Warspite and Valiant probably withdrew on time.
The USN are probably feeling a bit short on CA with only 6 active.
HMAS Canberra was previously reported sunk but no longer, so the RAN have their full complement of 3xCA.
HMS Sussex has recently arrived to bring RN CA strength up to 5.
HMNZS Leander was previously reported sunk but no longer.
The RN have three old and two modern CLs (Newcastle and Kenya).
The USN now have 5x Cleveland class CLs, so the quality of total USN cruisers is probably already a match for the IJN.
USN have a large quantity and quality advantage in DDs now, which will only get worse for Japan with a new Fletcher Division arriving practically every month… It can’t be long until the USN starts using Fletcher raids to probe the 4th Fleet and SEAF defences. IJN CLs will probably be best kept restricted to fast transport and rear area duties from now on to try and keep them away from Fletchers.
The USN also have their first 4xDE to start escorting their CVEs, amphibious or merchant convoys with.
Of 125 possible USN subs, 55 are reported sunk but they won’t all be true. About 7 will have withdrawn by now, so that still leaves about 70x USN subs on the map. It feels like there are more than that because they are everywhere and making a nuisance of themselves.
The Dutch should only have 8xSS left and the RN currently only has one, with HMS Trident recently arrived.

For the IJN:
BB Div 3 (Nagato and Mutsu) are currently upgrading at Yokosuka.
CA Div2 was disbanded and merged with CA Div1.
CA Div4 (3xTakao class + Maya) are on their way to Japan to be ready to take their 7/43 upgrade
CA Div6 (Tone and Chikuma) are currently undergoing minor repairs at Hakodate.
CL Div1 was disbanded when Tenryu and Tatsuta converted to CLAA and joined the CV task force.
CL Div3 (Kitakami and Oi) are currently upgrading at Tokyo. The DD escorts for this Div are currently escorting troop transport task forces in SEAF.

The 1:2 result here was kind of expected. 8th and 9th Divs arrived in reserve mode, so will be fresh to attack tomorrow. 12th Div took the brunt of the IJA losses so they can start to move back to Rangpur for steak and cold beers.
Lots of Artillery and 4x fresh IJA Divs are moving here via the road from Ranpur, so will arrive over the next few days to finish the job started here.
223 Group RAF is spotted moving to the west which is a surprise, I would have thought it would try to open a hexside into this stack to try and help it escape.

Japanese ground losses:
2034 casualties reported – the IJA still pay a hefty price here, probably from all the Allied artillery. Once the Allied guns are put out of action the results seem to swing quickly. Still about 650 guns to go in this stack. The IJA will continue to attack daily now as the Allies are stranded now with no hexside control. Supply might be being flown in through the LRCAP, but with daily attacks the Allied fatigue and disruption should increase faster than the IJA. 4x fresh IJA Divs are now moving from the hex between Rangpur and Darjeeling, so should only be 3 days away. If this Allied stack still exists by then the fresh Divs will administer the “blows of mercy”.

Kaga-1 on CV Kaga converting to size 36 from 27 – I’d noticed that Kaga still had a relatively small fighter unit so this resize is to get the Kaga air group to have roughly 50% fighters like the rest of the IJN CVs. There were 2x 81+ experience fighter pilots in reserve, so the other 7x 81+ fighter pilots were transferred from the Zuikaku fighter unit which is currently ashore at Torokina.
Kaga-2 on CV Kaga converting to size 18 from 27 – the excess 9x DB pilots were transferred to reserve and the extra 9x DB should be able to be removed from the CV tomorrow when they get placed in reserve.

I don’t usually post the air unit replacements, but it looks like every unit that was short of planes took replacements today. HQ Southern Army just unloaded at Soerabaja to trigger the upgrade of all JNAFUs within 18 hexes, so maybe that also triggered this Empire-wide issue of aircraft.

The IJA bombardment seemed to focus on 23rd Indian Div. It was zeroed by the end of the battle.
Second set of Allied numbers is after the IJA bombardment phase. Good reductions to the 2x Indian Divs.
Minimal IJA devices destroyed, but 1.5 Regts of Infantry disabled.
Seeing as the Allies are out of supply the IJA will keep attacking, except for 12th Div which is moving to Ranpur for R&R.

1x Allied task force spotted moving SE from Madras.
I’m getting the feeling that they are just probing to see what the IJN search arcs are like.
Betty strike units with 10% search are now based at Chittagong (x1) and Rangoon (x2), with Emily search patrols flying from Port Blair and Rangoon.

The BB and CA Divs will stay on patrol at Chittagong. CL Div 2 has arrived at Cox’s Bazar. None of these task forces report being spotted.
Japanese merchants are moving back to Chittagong with some supply, and will get back to work extracting 25th Army troops.
2 of the 3 xAK task forces near Ramree Island are spotted heading up the page, so they might be enough of a carrot to lure the RN to attack Chittagong.

A few other important Japanese task forces are approaching Rangoon from Singapore, with just over 80k of supply in two separate xAK task forces.
If that supply can get to Chittagong it will help the IJA land and air units recover and prepare for their next battles.
52nd Div is also just south of Rangoon. It was going to head to Sabang temporarily but IGHQ have just changed their orders to Rangoon.
59th Div will then move to Ramree Island which is currently only lightly defended by 2nd RTA Div/B (only 28 morale!) and the Sasebo 3rd SNLF.

Exciting times with Frank-A to start production on 1 July!
If the last factory doesn’t fully repair by then it will finish repairs during production.
To avoid a major stuff up, I’ve just moved 10x30 factories to Frank-R today so they can get working on research for that follow on aircraft straight away.
At +20% research per day, it should take <4 months to get Frank-R into production from here, so Sep/Oct 1943.
The hope is that Franks really help to score points against Allied 4E bombers as 1943 draws to a close, to keep the VP ratio above 3:1.

As one of the older Sentai in the IJAAF, it is finally time to send 9th Sentai to the Indian Front.
It was the pre-war plan to use Sentai that don’t withdraw as front line units, but 9th Sentai has been kept as a training unit until now to try and keep up the flow rate of trained pilots. They will now upgrade to Tojo IIc and move to India by a mix of train and flying.
Once they get to Burma these trainee pilots will be swapped out for experienced (70+ exp) pilots.

59th Div will then move to Ramree Island

Crap, don't send a division to that Hell Hole. Its not worth it. The only way outta of there is the hex to the east. If nothing else put the 59th there and let it build up its fortifications. If the Allies take Ramree at some time they'll have to shock attack across the river into a jungle/rough hex with a fortified unit. Should be murder on them.

Thanks for the Naval Update! You are obviously WAY ahead; that's alot of Allied carnage. I didn't 100% follow, but sounds like he's lost alot of ships. 4 USN CVs is alot to lose without an exchange.

6th Sentai were set to LRCAP 50%, range 0 over hex 60,35.
Altitude 10k’ seems to have allowed the interception to occur, so the transports are probably within +/- 5k’ of that.
The IJAAF have flown a lot of LRCAP (usually range 0) in Bengal in the last few months, but all at 20k’ until this unit were ordered down to try and intercept some transports. This is the first time that I can remember intercepting transports in any game.
I will put a few more F or FB at 10k’ to try and shoot down some more transports, as this makes for easy victory points and pilot experience.

14th Indian Div and 3rd Indian Bde destroyed, clearing that hex.
Now to finish off IV Indian Corps.

The 3rd Special Force stack has lost 72 and 75 AV in the last 2 days so looks to be fading fast, mostly from fatigue/disease, but the odd casualty caused by IJA artillery and aerial bombardment.

Thanks for the Naval Update! You are obviously WAY ahead; that's alot of Allied carnage. I didn't 100% follow, but sounds like he's lost alot of ships. 4 USN CVs is alot to lose without an exchange.

I actually don't think that the IJN is ahead, the naval situation is probably about even.
Based on the numbers of active ships, the IJN might be slightly ahead due to the CV situation but the USN Pacific Fleet is definitely ahead in terms of Destroyers and Subs.
Combined Allied Cruiser strength is also ahead of the IJN, and about even on Battleships.

It feels to me like the 4x USN CVs lost will be a big factor in helping Japan get to late 1943 without major incident, so it has definitely helped delay the Allied advance.
I am expecting things to go downhill pretty quickly for Japan in 1944 when the Allies get their numbers and quality advantages.

Delay actions in SEAF and 4th Fleet will rely mostly on land based air strikes to make the Allies pay a price for each advance.

I've seen some good examples from other AARs where the IJNAF strength wasn't thrown immediately at fresh Allied CV task forces, but was launched a day or two after the invasion hit the beaches after the land based CAP had already inflicted some losses on the Allied CV units.

I might also try to send the IJN CVs around the flanks to hit follow on task forces rather than target what I expect will be the most heavily defended main assault task forces.

Hit the CVs when they withdraw . . .

Maybe, IGHQ are still in the early stages of coming up with a plan to counter the inevitable USN amphibious operations.

Thanks to SigInt, a lot of attack transports were reported at Pearl Harbour on 28 Jun.
The Allies could use these anywhere from NorPac to SoPac, so the ships of Combined Fleet will generally stay central.

IJNAF ground units have been spread out like a web with ships and land based aircraft to be the spider.

The first sign of an upcoming amphibious assault might be an increase in Allied sub activity.

Assuming that the next amphibious assault will be somewhere on the edge of the empire like Tabiteuea, the outline plan when an invasion task force is detected will be for IJNAF air units to move forward via air transfer to bases with reasonable weather.
Fighters will concentrate close to, but try to avoid the actual amphib landing target(s).
Auxiliaries near the target like AV, AS, AD, AG will be withdrawn with PB escorts.

George units will then be set to CAP/LRCAP range 0 over the landing beaches in prep for D-Day, to try to cut down as many carrier aircraft as possible in the first few days.
This is on another assumption that the Allies will fly at least some ground/airfield/port attack missions in support of the assault.
Local patrol boats like SC, PB, AMc, ACM etc will also form into task forces to add clutter and potentially attract Allied strikes against them. If they survive day 1 those small craft will withdraw to the next line of defence.

Then depending how things go and whether USN CV strength has been depleted or not, on days 2+ land based strike aircraft and CV based aircraft could then be moved forward from positions just to the rear to strike at Allied shipping.
Surviving George units could then split themselves between CAP over the landing beaches and escorts for land based attack aircraft in support of the IJN CV strikes.

IJN BB and CA task forces will be kept in reserve in close support of the CVs, and will only be unleashed if previous days go well for the defenders.
Otherwise they will try to keep themselves afloat to defend more important islands further back, like the Marianas.

47th Div forms in the field at Milne Bay on 27 Jun 43.
LGEN Sasaki is the best LGEN on the reserve list, so he replaces the mediocre LGEN Sato whose land skill of 58 inspiration of 47 just aren’t good enough to command a regular B-grade Division.
The TOE allows for another Infantry Regt and a 47mm AT Gun Bn, plus a few more of everything else.
I'll have to remember to split this Div into thirds to let it fill out faster.

Then 42nd Div forms the next day at Shortlands, with potential to take replacements and fill out to be a good B grade TOE.
LGEN Ishimoto will keep command as he had the Infantry Group in good shape with high morale.
Historically it looks like he became the Commandant of the Chinhae Bay Fortress at Fusan in June 1943 and had to wait until May 44 for promotion to LGEN and command of 50th Div on Formosa.

Task Force 356 lays defensive minefield at Tanegashima ( 102 , 62) and sets course for Nagasaki/Sasebo – an allied sub was spotted in this shallow water hex, so this base will be developed as an IJN patrol base. An AG will allow a SC Div to move here but another ACM will need to be found or converted to maintain the minefield. All ACM are currently committed so they are an auxiliary type that I could definitely do with more of.

Aircraft A6M8 Zero advances R&D – to 1/44 +12/day.
Aircraft J1N1-S Irving advances R&D – to 8/43 so next month, but only moving at +2/day from 1x size 30 factory plus engine bonus. As it won’t advance research again this factory was moved to the J1N1-Sa to get a start on that research. I will just need to remember to change an existing aircraft production factory to the Irving on the 1st of August. There are a couple of surplus production factories at the moment, like the Topsy transport factory. The Topsy-II factory will be changed to build 30x J1N1 Irving per month. That will quickly build a stockpile of IJN Night Fighters as there aren’t many units that can fly them until 1944.
The current plan is to also build some of the Zero NF variant to be able to upsize the IJN NF units on any CVs that remain afloat in late 1944. I need to get a research factory onto the Zero NF soon to try and get it a few months early. As I’ve never played into the late game against a human I plan to trial most IJN NF models with 30/month production rates just to see how they go. After the Irving NF, Zero NF and Frances NF will become available in mid-1944 then late 1945 the Denko.

SS RO-37 arrives at Port Arthur – to 3rd Fleet based out of Soerabaja.
30th Sentai arrives at Kiamusze – a new IJAAF fighter unit
1st Air Fleet arrives at Hiroshima/Kure – bought out so it can move to Guam.

Outstanding news with 30th Sentai’s arrival today. I went to upgrade it to FBs which would have cost 270 PP, but it can convert to Oscar IIb for free and there are enough in the pool to do it on the day it arrives!

The IJAAF need as many fighter pilot training slots as it can get, so this unit will be issued Oscars and become an advanced fighter training unit.
It will move towards PNG to join the 6th Air Div and double the number of IJAAF fighter Sentai there.

A relatively quiet day to finish the first half of 1943.
HQ IV Indian Corps was the only unit to surrender to a 4x Division attack by the IJA.
It will no doubt be bought back and will be easily filled with all the excess support and motorised support squads that the Allies get.
2nd British Div was zeroed so this Allied stack is now very close to destruction.

7x IJA Divs were placed into reserve mode to let them try and recover some disruption and fatigue.

Lashio expands fortifications to size 2
Asansol expands airfield to size 9 – Asansol is on the shortlist to be the next main target for the IJA Indian Expeditionary Army. The Allies have a very large Army with a lot of US coloured unit symbols around Calcutta now, but it still feels like it is a few months too early to hand the initiative over to the Allies in India. After Darjeeling is captured there might have to be one more offensive operation in India. I have probably run out of time to attempt to encircle and capture Calcutta before the end of 1943 but threatening to do that could still have the desired effect of keeping the Allies in a defensive posture for about 3 more months.
Pakhoi expands fortifications to size 3 – that might do for now, but I forgot to turn it off…
Kendari expands port to size 4 – stopped, forts to build now. This is the HQ base for 3rd Fleet and 22nd Air Flotilla with the IJN 12th Base Force and 36th JNAFU providing the ground garrison.
Saumlaki expands fortifications to size 3 – stopped. This base currently only has the 32nd JAAF AF Coy with no aircraft. It might be handed to the IJN to use as a floatplane base until the Allies start building up Darwin again.
CL Noshiro beginning refit in shipyard at Yokohama/Yokosuka
21st Sentai converting to Ki-45 KAIc Nick – at Rangoon.
Previous report of sinking of SS Tinosa incorrect. Intelligence reports ship is still in service
Accelerated training for 47 IJ Navy pilots from month-cycle 10 – there are no veteran pilots posted to Training Command, so this must just be a random bonus.
TK Hioki Maru arrives at Fukuoka – a big Type 1 TL tanker. It will wait for the next T1TL convoy to arrive then join it on the Singapore-Fukuoka fuel/oil route.
SC CHa-61 arrives at Niigata – will move to Tokyo then to 6th Fleet area for local patrol duty. It probably won’t have a very long career!
261 Ku S-2 arrives at Kagoshima – there are just enough trainee pilots in the IJN reserve pool to fill these units with 20ish experience pilots. They will all train as quickly as possible and deploy forward for advanced training in their operational theatre. 261 Ku S-2 will upgrade to George and transfer to the land based HQ 1st Air Fleet for defensive duty in the Marianas.
331 Ku S-1 arrives at Oita – 331 Kokutai will transfer to HQ 26th Air Flotilla and move to the Marshalls. The S-1 Hikotai will upgrade to George.
331 Ku K-1 arrives at Oita – this is the TB Hikotai, so it will upgrade to Jill now that all CV based TB units have completed their Jill upgrades.
501 Ku K-1 arrives at Chiba – a DB unit that will upgrade to D4Y1 and move to HQ 25th Air Flotilla in SEAF.
531 Ku K-1 arrives at Chiba – another DB unit that arrives with 2x D4Y1 so will fill out with them. It will move to HQ 23rd Air Flotilla in SEAF.
761 Ku K-1 arrives at Kanoya – 2x Betty units that will fill out and transfer to 61st Air Flotilla (1st Air Fleet) in the Marianas.
761 Ku K-2 arrives at Kanoya
934 Ku T-2 arrives at Yokohama/Yokosuka – a size 6 floatplane unit that will upgrade to Jakes. It arrives already posted to 3rd Fleet, so it will move towards the Philippines and Eastern DEI to join the 3rd Fleet ASW Flotilla. Once the pilots are trained up it could also join the recently arrived LSD Nigitsu Maru that has a capacity of 6 to provide troopship convoy protection ASW patrols.
1006 Ku U-1 arrives at Chiba – a transport unit that is transferred to 11th Air Flotilla. It will move south to help extract high value units from forward areas of 6th Fleet once the Allied invasions start coming.

Japan got about 3200 points last month while the Allies got about 600.
If the Allies keep getting about +600/month they will finish 1943 on about 20,500.
Japan would then need at least 3x that Allied score for auto-victory, so something north of 61,200 will be required.
To get to 61,200 would only need about 450 points / month, so Japan doesn’t need to take risks and try to score thousands of points / month anymore.

It might be best to withdraw BB Div 1 from Chittagong to reduce the risk of losing the two high value BBs there.
Cruisers will still need to be risked in forward areas to protect merchant ships from raiding Allied CA/CL/DD task forces.

My only thought here is that I don't know how base points are handled. Does this total reflect all current builds to all bases? From my experience I don't believe it does. If that's so then 'Allies Base Points' would be different. Larger. Therefore you could be behind the 'eight ball', so to speak, from where you think you are, as to where you are actually.

Unless someone can confirm or deny my thoughts I'd strive to get as many points as possible. Of course accounting for risk is always a factor.

JMHO. YMMV.

No surprise that the Allies didn’t fly any bombers today!
A very quiet turn.
IJN subs missed a few targets near Pearl Harbour and Christmas Island (PO).

Planning for future offensive operations in India is ongoing, but the option of switching to the defensive and forcing the Allies to come at entrenched IJA Divisions is also being seriously considered.

62nd Div combines from its 2x Bdes at Jehol and luckily the best of the 2x MGENs keeps command.
MGEN Tsuda is permitted to wear LGEN rank locally, but he will have to wear MGEN rank if he returns to Army HQ for the next General Staff conference.
I had let the most recent Bde to fill out its TOE before combining so now the Div is 110%, mostly from extra Support squads.

This Div is currently at Jehol to add to the Manchukuo garrison assault strength total.
23, 24, 25, 28 and 29th Divs are still waiting at Jehol for orders to move via train towards Malaya.

The Manchukuo Garrison is currently 8977/8000 so one of them could move now with no risk of activating the Soviets.
29th Div is given orders to move south.

A total of 282 AV will withdraw from the Manchukuo garrison before the end of the war, with 4th Garrison Unit next to depart in Dec 43.
The North China Garrison Bde will arrive at Peiping in 77 days bringing 258 AV with it once it recovers all disabled devices.
When it arrives it will move to Jehol to allow either the 28th Div to start the trek to Malaya, or 104th Div to be bought out and shipped out of Fusan.

10x Independent Infantry Bdes arrive in China with 152 AV each on 10 Dec 43. The plan is to use them to free up the Independent Mixed Bdes currently on garrison duty inside China and to also garrison the China coast.

23rd, 24th and 25th Divs will stay in Manchukuo until at least late 1944, so they might end up staying in this theatre for the duration of the war.
