China...

I don't see many Chinese LCUs sitting out there in the open building forts. Especially in the central region, where almost all of them seem to be moving from/to bases. Do you prefer them resting in the bases instead? I'd say the added value of WR terrain and 3+ field forts on a major road is worth some of the squads remaining disabled. Even more so behind a river. Or between Changsha and Changteh

...I don't think defense in depth works anyhow in China.

ABDA sends in their ships with high night time experience to test the waters at Geraldton...and they performed admirably. Cassin is a Mahan class destroyer, about the best SAG destroyer the USN has right now.

Conditions here are about the best they can be for the Allies...clear and 100% moonlight. Can Japan rearm? That is the question.

These fights are designed to be skirmishes, to drain IJN supplies and stamina.

Argonaut is six hexes from Iwo Jima, roughly on the same course as TF Dewey...and the Argonaut has 3/3 dl. TF Dewey is 9 hexes from Iwo...and now we are contemplating a change of course or distraction.

Deathstars fighters were on full alert, but the Japanese bombers stayed home.

About the only theatre I feel confidant on at the moment...I will use Trusty and Truant and a O20 (dutch minelayer sub) in attempt to attrit the IJN fleet which includes at least one battleship. British warship will continue to repair and ready themselves at Calcutta, along with a growing strength in the Madras to Ceylon area. As a force in being, they will guard the flanks Diamond Harbor and Viz.

American air forces and base forces are starting to arrive in Bombay will really swing the fight here.

Fly a Japanese flag and pretend to be a whale processing vessel - the Japanese will like that. I call it the Dewey Deceptimal System.

Got a foot of snow...

Dutch will have a tough time with another attack...where will all that artillery go? Front lines I guess.

The Dewey is going closer to Daito now and Japan, and will attempt to sneak thru...I give her no chance.

IJ has 50+ fighters at Geraldton, that is still heavily damaged, so stuck at a size 2 runway for a while. Cue level 1.

Japan has a maneuver advantage over the Allies on the ground. I have two heavy AA units here neutralizing his bombers.

The safe play is to cede everything here to the Japanese.

I have devised a plan to that might save Perth for a while...but then Japan can reallocate forces here much faster than I can and once committed the Allied troops would be pocketed and that would have long reaching ramifications. I also have to assume Japan is going to cross the Brisbane line.

It depends on his overall aim. If he just wants a base in range of Sydney and Melbourne so he can bomb industry, he can go for Brisbane without triggering the emergency reinforcements. If he is trying to conquer OZ, I don't think he can with present forces.

I think his overall aim was to get autovictory…so he will be hunting for vps anywhere he can grab them.

Looks like it. Then he could go for the strategic VP, and once he can’t milk the Australian industry for more, go in for the kill. There’re a bunch of VP’s to catch, with Sydney and the other bases, and the number of LCU’s.

However, given the attrition he suffers, especially in the air, I’m still doubtful he can achieve that AV in ‘43...

The Allied side must be played criminally poorly for there to be any realistic chance of a Japanese autovictory on 1 January 1943. The correct approach is always for Japan to prepare the groundwork for an autovictory in 1944.

I might have misunderstood your post. Do you imply that it's correct, from the Japanese perspective, to aim at the A.V. in 1944 rather than in 1943?

If so, without going offtopic of course, can you elaborate a little bit why?

Personally, I found much easier to get the A.V. at 01-01-1944 than in 01-01-1943, but I thought I have had two very peculiar cases in my last games. Now, I start wondering whether I mistunderstood/overlooked some basic strategic approach.

In general, I suppose that the same player who makes you get close to the 4:1 in 1942, is not going to turn his gameplay level upside down and recuperate immensely in 1943. However, at that point, a 4:1 in 1942 looks easier to achieve than a 3:1 in 1943 due to the difference in the quality and quantity of Allied equipment in 1942 and 1943 respectively.
Basically: I found easier to win 3:1 in 1944, but I have always thought that a 4:1 in 1942 is more feasible than a 3:1 in 1943.
