is there an easy way to figure out if you can cut them off?

for instance: i've captured Rostov on the Don. I'm considering a move to strike at astrakhan, which would entrap large numbers of russian units in the caucas region.

would they be out of supply if i was able to cut the railways and maintain an east west band of control?

is there a way to figure out if enemy cities are supply hubs?

There are two main supply sources in the area: Stalingrad and Baku. So a "raid" on Astrakhan is quite dangerous.
Also you need to think of your supplies.

By which railroads do you plan to supply your armies in Astrakhan?

Few exceptions: Bologna in Italy and Baku.

So does that mean there are no Soviet Supply sources south of Rostov? I only see a city with 1 Manpower (Baku) and Oil Production hexes, which presumably don't count? Presumably if the Caucasus were cut off, there would still be some Port Supply through Baku, but perhaps not enough to fully supply all Soviet units in the region?

No, as I said, Baku is an exception in the game. It is a main supply source.

How can you tell, or is this mentioned in the manual somewhere? So basically there is no easy way to cut main supply to the Caucasus?

They are the 2 exceptions. I was thinking of adding a supply icon to those location types.

That would be helpful to avoid the player making assumptions they might regret...

Ok, revisiting this old thread.

i pulled this off...kind of.

i was able to break out south of rostov and cut the rail about 9 hexes south of stalingrad.

i simultaneously was able to make an unopposed landing in astrakhan(i took baku many turns ago). i was very happy. took a lot of planning, not sure it'd ever happen.

but i've opened the next turn, and there are a few issues.

#1-it does not appear that the soviets south of these rail junctions are now out of supply AFAI can tell.

#2-even though i occupied astrakhan with marines last turn, when i attempted to ship in heavier formations this turn, i was told i didn't have enough landing ships-which i shouldn't need since i occupied the port last turn? also, even though they are sitting on the port, the marines show out of supply.

is something wrong, or am i deeply misunderstanding how supply works?

Caspian Sea is cut off from Germany using fleets. All the ports will not generate supply for them since they have no ships there.

He said that Baku was taken. Can you please post a screenshot of your frontline boldairade?

What about ports on the Red Sea?
Is Kuwait a minor capital so the Axis is in supply with that if cut off from Iraq?

Well then I am not sure how they were being supplied? Do the ports that can't receive goods store supplies?

The Axis have Kuwait and the port in Iraq there.
The Allies have the port on the Persian side.
The Allies cut the rail lines to those ports but the units continued to be in supply.

So just wondering if ports gather supplies even if they can not be supplied by sea as we know the Axis can not travel around Cape Horn.
