Low-tech static defenses - 3/18/2021 4:59:39 PM

Greetings,

somehow I was missing a low tech static defense building. You know the old concrete bunkers, tunnels and so on.

It was always bothering me having a nice flatland chokepoint between two defensible mountain ranges and not being able to build any kind of defenses there before auto-turrents.

I could imagine it in two different ways:
1) Working as a unit, like the auto turrents. Just taking manpower and a lot of industrial capacity instead of high-tech parts. The manpower being the garrison.

2) Working as a hex-building, increasing maximum entrenchment values of the hex. I can even imagine it as a 6-tier building, with e.g. 50 max entrenchment per tier. As non automatic static defenses only help a garrison, whatever that may be. Of course there should be some kind of upkeep on the building, (e.g. 100 workers per tier).

I see a few definitive gameplay advantages:
a) you can increase the defensibility of cities or strategic points, making artillery a necessity to siege them
b) infantry and AT-guns stand a chance against tanks in flat terrain / cities, when properly fortified
c) giving the player strategic option to fall back to a (non-natural) defensive position

I can see my very own Maginot-Line manned by space marines already!

What are your thoughts?

Others and I already suggested similar things before. No response from Vic thus far on any of the ideas, but some people that know him longer indicated he does not like static defenses.

In the meantime, there are a few options to spend minimal manpower (and thus food and money upkeep) on this:
- play around with transfer to strip some Birgades
- raise a bunch of 500 manpower, machinegun units. Pretty cheap, need little food and strong defense
- In 1.08.03, actually Buggies are much cheaper in manpower (as you get refunded about 66% of all spend Manpower)

It seems our men have developed an allergy to manning fortresses and turreted blockhouses after being confined to sealed domes for so long.

That said, I sure hope Navies will at least include some form of Coastal Artillery!

I don't think it's needed.Defences are hard as it is and will just hurt the pacing and the A.I.
