Ok a game I began days after AE was released has finally drawn to a close. A bit annoying it simply finished but there you are. I will speak of more in other postings in the days ahead no doubt.

However the attached screenshot is an amalgam of what was sent to me this morning by my honourable Japanese opponent as the victory screen and the previous intel screen from my side for the previous day.

Can anyone explain to me the discrepancy between the Major Victory that has been showing as the result for weeks on my intel screen and the Marginal Victory on the final screen? Looking at the difference in the points I gained another few hundred in the last 24 hour period.

In one sense it is not very significant for me, the Japanese still holding some islands that are self governing prison camps, Kyushu and Shikoku and Tokyo, Yokohama and Maebashi with starving troops in ruins does not feel at all marginal to me..... in the same way that still holding Berlin, and the odd holdout would have meant the war in Europe was a marginal victory?

On the other hand is there some issue here about the victory conditions I have not understood?

Cheers

Roger

Did you use more than 2 atomic bombs?

I think a similar outcome was just discussed. You are 2:1 on Sept 1, 1945 ...

It was major until September 1, 1945, then it dropped a level on that day ...

Aha, no I did not use any A bombs at all, I landed and took real estate. My A bomb unit was tucked away in northern Korea doing nothing.

Ah so maybe that's the answer, someone said I had to do this one day earlier...... I didn't get the memo.

Makes sense in gameplay terms.

Correct, from gameplay for IJ it is all about survival ... if they can exceed history then they get a bonus. They still lose, just not as badly.

Read my posts in this thread.

Unless the Allied player gets an auto victory before 1 September 1945, they will never achieve a Decisive Victory.

Alfred

Edit:

PS. Was this the game involving Flashman? If so, I shudder at the thought how Valentina will react to the outcome.

Well you obviously missed the post about Valentina's vaporisation at Port Arthur...... unlike you......

The AAR will have a concluding post or two...

Ah, but wasn't she only a Colonel?  That would mean there would be someone to whom she reported to and that person in turn won't want to inform Uncle Joe they have ultimately been short changed.

For those interested, this is how close the game came to the Decisive when I wasn't actually recalling I had to get there by the end of August......

You should replace Flashman with Agent 86 so that he can say:

"missed it by that much"

I don't know whether its an age or a culture thing but the Agent 86 references are going right over my head.

Yes, from the TV series and two movies "Get Smart". I liked the quotable lines and the lines of Agent 99 (Barbara Feldon):

All this talk of secret agents and associated femme fatales got me thinking about a recent (small) venture of mine.

On a whim I purchased the Kindle version of Ian Fleming's Casino Royale (the 1st James Bond book) for my iPad. I remember my mother years ago saying she had read all of the Bond books, I just never got around to it.
Well, I am here to say I am glad I didn't put it off any longer. Fleming is an excellent writer that is particularly good at describing his scenes so that you feel you are right there with 007.
His first lady sidekick is one Vesper Lynd. She works under the "Head of S" or Soviet section of the British secret service, who is trying to retire thru bankruptcy one Le Chiffre also known as Herr Ziffer, etc.

So far I am a bit over halfway through, and Bond has managed to step in it along with Vesper, but no spoilers. Lots of fun and juicy espionage. Give it a try!
