John was indeed a very kind man, and a brilliant one. I had the honor of knowing him professionally and, briefly, personally. He flew up to Vermont in his private plane with his instructor once and John and I had lunch together, and I had many phone conversations with him when I was in gaming journalism covering his titles. Later, I did some minor writing for one or two of his games, and IIRC I did a small scenario in a Panzer Campaigns title at one point, working with the estimable Glenn Saunders. Mostly, though, I remember his patience with the often extremely hostile feedback from rabid gamers back in the day, his realistic assessment of the wawrgame market, and his humane, honest, and respectful interactions with everyone with whom he encountered. He will be missed, for many reasons; wargaming is only one of them.
