Spent hours playing his games, hours of enjoyment but also hours of anguish.

RIP

Amen.
What can you say about a person who has given you such joy through his game designs, for over twenty years?
Sad passing, for sure.

The Campaign Series was my GoTo game for years. I think I still have my Talonsoft boxes.

Rest In Peace, John.

Sad to hear of this. A real legend. His spirit will live on in all his games which I am thankful for having played and be yet to play.

Depressing news. John's games were a staple for me since 97 or so when I stumbled upon West Front at a local Gamestop. Truly will be missed, RIP.

I saw his picture on the page link posted, and he looked like a kind man. Then I read the comments and many said he was of a kind and funny character. I feel sorry for his family, he was only about 67. I know several people that died of the same thing, brain cancer. My ex wife is one of them.

Very sad to hear this, a legendary wargame designer and from all I've heard a great guy. We lost my wife's mother to the same kind of cancer. Hopefully someday in the future there will be a cure. Condolences to his family and may he rest in peace.

Brain cancer is one that today cannot be beat - hopefully it will be soon. It got my wife's Dad before I could even meet him (50). It sounds like he lived a good life and loved what he did - at the end of the day you really cannot hope for more than that. RIP.

John was indeed a very kind man, and a brilliant one. I had the honor of knowing him professionally and, briefly, personally. He flew up to Vermont in his private plane with his instructor once and John and I had lunch together, and I had many phone conversations with him when I was in gaming journalism covering his titles. Later, I did some minor writing for one or two of his games, and IIRC I did a small scenario in a Panzer Campaigns title at one point, working with the estimable Glenn Saunders. Mostly, though, I remember his patience with the often extremely hostile feedback from rabid gamers back in the day, his realistic assessment of the wawrgame market, and his humane, honest, and respectful interactions with everyone with whom he encountered. He will be missed, for many reasons; wargaming is only one of them.
